I see that everyone else has hit the same exact issues that I have when applying to Norfolk Southern. I have applied to this company approximately 7 times with 16+ years railroad experience with another railroad and have been turned down. All I have to say is good luck... i am about to give up. It's certainly a case of who you know and not what you know. |

I recently was hired. You have to go online www.nscorp.com search for the position you are interested in and apply for it. They will email you a response yes they are interested or not interested at this time. If they are interested, you will have a couple of test to take to get you into the interview. One is a mathematical/english type speed test, the other is a personality test. |

Been there, done that - repeatedly. My question has to do with experience - sixteen years in the craft with another (major) carrier. I keep getting e-mails to the effect that "we are looking at someone whose qualifications more closely match the position". How much closer can you get? Looked at this way, it becomes more apparent that I'm doing something wrong. I hoped that already being in the railroad system would speed the process a bit - like transfering from one carrier to another - but it seems that's not the case. |

I would suggest anyone with common sense who has a family or life....stay away from trainservice, they spend 13 weeks in the hiring process and 30 years trying to fire you! As a 12 year conductor with former BN the NS was known for the Natzi Southern way of rules....or No S***ters...this railroad used to make it's employees crap in bags until 1994 or so! Would you want to work for someone like this! The we own you mentality is something to be desired! Don't do it.....ask most trainservice employees about regrets....the list is long, my career cost me a marriage...try telling your kids christmas eve you will see them in a few days...for the sixth year in a row, missing games, birthdays....my daughter still tells me I have been a great provider...just not a father! Think about it! |

I've been employed by NS as Conductor for 2 years. I can tell you that NS is the lowest paying Class 1 railroad in America. The conductors extraboards are not guaranteed. The 6-year step-rate applies to anyone who hired out after 2004, meaning you only make 80% of full wages and won't top out until after you've been marked up 6 years. We don't have system-wide seniority either like UP, CN and BNSF does. You work on call and never know when you are coming or going so trying to relax and enjoy the time that you are at home is difficult. The railroads are built on greed and if it weren't for the unions we would all be making close to minimum wage and paying for the majority of our health care costs. Also railroad employees don't pay into social security but to the railroad retirement board and thus have to contribute much more of their checks to the retirement system. On the upside the work is extremely easy and I've never had a problem taking off as much time as I want whenever I want to. Also you are your own boss. Supervisors are seldom seen. I have decided that I will stick around until they raise my health care contributions so much or freeze my wages to the point where it's not justified to keep living this way. But good luck to anyone who decides to pursue a job like this. Some guys never have a problem with the way things are. |

Think about it! Please listen to me people. NS is not the place you want to work unless you like staying at home. I'm on the extraboard and only get about two starts a week. No one is retiring any time soon. You start at 80% and before you reach 90% NS sends you to engineer school. During you six months of training you get 85% pay. The union representation does not care about anyone hired after 1985. I like the job but staying at home not working is getting really old. |

A job with Norfolk Southern is highly competitive. Anywhere from 50 to 100 people will be at the interview process.
One test - approxiamately 84 questions - this is a speed test, you have about 11 seconds per question. If you have to think about it fill it in and move on. Points are not deducted for wrong answers. My reasoning is if I guess on 84 questions and I get 1/4 right then I have gotten 21 questions correct. If you take your time for right answers only you will probably not make it to an interview. Personality test - I am not sure what an IJ is but everyone in my group that made it to the interview where that type of personality. Maybe someone who knows personality test can describe in more detail? The way I answered questions was on the line of: Non risk taker, who likes to read books listen to classical music basically you average boring person who gets along with others. |

Hi, I'm interested in the management trainee position (transportation). Has anyone gone through it or familiar with it? |
|
SxDes4 in Wise, Virginia 7 months ago |
Never went through it, and don't see why anyone would want to. The way they treat ya I sure would not want to be treated like that. But this is my opinion. I work there and I see first hand how they train them and how nice people are when they start out, then how sneaky and underhanded that they turn out to be, because of the way they train them. Then they end up being hated by everyone. |

Dont know if this will help ya or not, but when you fill out any information on the forms for NS, do not omit anything, and if you got a dozen speeding tickits say so, if you did jail time say so, I'm not saying this is why. But if you lied about anything, and I mean anything they will find it, and they will not hire you if that is the case. They really do, do an extensive background check. But the key is do not lie about it. I had brandishing a firearm on my record and still got hired, and I know another guy that did time for stabbing a guy and he got hired. So maybe this will help ya, good luck. |

You people kill me. NS is a great company who offers a great job with great benefits. If you hate this job so much.., QUIT and find another job to go to and complain about everything. If you need to be off work then MARK OFF. Stop bringing your BAD attitude to work and draining the life out of everyone you talk to about your job. I am an extra board conductor at 80% (WHICH YOU KNEW WHEN YOU SIGNED ON)and I am making between $1200-$1600 per week for doing VERY little work, with excellent health and retirement benefits, my job is protected by a union and I could'nt be happier. SO SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND DO YOUR JOB!!!!! |
|
SxDes4 in Wise, Virginia 7 months ago |
Well hello to you too extra board conductor, glad your making that much out here, cause where we are were not, and also where we are our union steward is putting it too us, because he wants to be a boss, and also I wasnt complaining about my job, I happen to like my job very much thank you, I was talking about the bossing jobs, not conductors or engineers jobs. And as far as the benifits yeah there not bad, but 5 years ago we were not paying for them, and now we are and we just keep letting the union let the company go right on up on what we have to pay for these benifits. Oh and I learned the words MARK ME OFF SICK a long time ago buddy. |

I have actually applied for a Conductor and Management Trainee position. Does anyone know as to when they have new classes starting? I'm just trying to get some insight. As a conductor, how many hours a week can you expect to work? Does anyone work in the Jacksonville area? I'm a little confused to the dollar amount that rlroader mentioned and looking at the daily percentage rates mentioned on the NS web site. Based on that amount, I would think you would be putting in more than just 10 hours a day. Is he factoring in overtime? Any (Positive) input is appreciated. Thanks |

Just applied for a track laborer position. Just seeing if anyone has had experience in this field and what do you think about it? My dad has 38 years with the railroad and Im hoping this will help me get in. Is there anything that my dad can even do to help me get in, or is this not a factor at all? |

I recently sent my application and resume for conductor trainee to NS. All of this was done online on their website. Can anyone tell me how long it usually takes before you get any kind of response from NS by email? Do you get an email confirming they received your app and resume? How can I confirm they got everything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The railroad is not very fast at letting ppl know the info they need. But get on the NS website like every other day and update all of your profile information and resume, because everything in their system gets erased after a certain period of time. So just keep updating and make sure you dont lie about anything on your application because they will find out and wont hire you. Good Luck |

working for norfolk southern is ok if you like being a slave.
there are no great benefits if you work throught the union.
you have to pay for parking if you work downtown and everyone you work with gossips about each other all the time and they are like crabs in a barrell come on in if you are a gladiator - you might make it to retirement. |

let me explain my situation really quick. my uncle has worked for norfolk southern for over 10 years and is a supervisor. he and a good friend of his who happens to be another supervisor for norfolk southern got me into a hiring session in may. I had my hiring session, passed my test, got my interview, and a call the next day saying i was hired for the carpenters helper position. over the next 2 or 3 weeks, i took my physical, drug test, background/dmv check, and even had to submit medical records and a doctors note for something minor i had disclosed on my physical. the thing i am worried about is.. i havent heard a single thing since about the end of june, and that was about 2 months ago. ive talked to my uncle who keeps telling me to be patient, but i feel as though they have either forgotten about me, or something is wrong, and i just havent heard about it. i tried calling the HR department lately, but with no luck. any suggestions on what i should do? thanks alot. |

today,I went to an recruiting seesion with Norfolk for a CMC dispatcher job. There were 72 people who arrived for the session that started at 8:00 am sharp. One person missed out because he did not arrive on time. We had an orientation about norfolk and the job..then we took 2 tests (math and verbal). The tests were graded, and 52 people were eliminated. The remaining 20 people took two additional tests that were math and verbal. After the tests were graded, ten people were further eliminated. The remaining ten people were interviewed and given a typing test.
