Here is what I would recommend....

Spiral notebook - a 5 subject college ruled. Trust me, if you take notes, you will need all of the paper in the notebook.
Highlighters - a few different colors
The stickers that you can put on paper that "save" the holes that are punched into paper. You will need them to use in your manual because you may accidentally rip a page out half way and the paper hole will break
A zipper pouch that you can put in a binder so you can store stuff in your manual (pencils, those stickers)
Pencils for tests
Pens so you can take notes
Folder or accordian folder to keep handouts. You will get TONS of dead trees to keep track of.
A backpack or tote bag to keep all of this stuff, you may also want it to be big enough to carry your lunch.
A sweater cause the building was always cold. (Now that I wrote that, the building will be HOT)

For the apartment:

Hangers - you only get like 10, if you are lucky. You can also buy 20 hangers for around $2 at target
Lunchbox - lunch in the building is expensive and isn't that great
Be prepared to buy detergent, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, cleaning products/fluids, trash bags. There is a vacuum and mop. There are also pots and pans.
Gladware type stuff to put lunches in
A travel coffee mug if you need caffeine to function

Clothes -
You won't need as much casual wear as you think that you need. In all honesty, you get one day off a week and the last thing that you seem to want to do is go out for a drunken night because you spend the next day wiped out. We all seemed to go to dinner different places on Saturday night and Sunday was "errand" day. A few went out, but it was the young pups and even they only did it once or twice.

Bring a nice business suit, something professional, you will wear that the first day.

Jeans are allowed a few days, no holes or anything like that. No sweatshirts that day or tee's. They do watch what you are wearing.

I would bring a few empty 3.4oz bottles or travel size stuff for the IOE. If you are going to LHR, you will not be allowed with full size products. Just in case.

You may end up buying an extra pillow or humidifier while there. The pillows bit and it was really dry.

A little secret...we get a HUGE and I mean HUGE discount with FedEx. Anything that you can't fit or decide that you don't need once there, you can ship home at a HUGE discount. (Did I mention the discount?)

Vitamins/Hand Sanitizer - it doesn't fail my class and the other classes were getting sick. This stuff seemed to help.

Think that is about it...
