You are going to run into this over and over again. You will have better luck with smaller outfits and be honest about your background. Don't go into detail but let them know you made a mistake, paid the price and you are a different person now. Larger corporations have policies in place and there is no way around them. Smaller Mom & Pop places are much more flexible. Also, construction, Unions and warehouses will be much easier. Funny that you should say "that should be against the law." Didn't you break the law and get the felony in the first place? |

Uh, you shouldn't have broken the law in the first place, or you wouldn't have this problem. I am loving the irony, though! |

I'm not a felon, but I sympathize. If you've been able to clean up, I think you should be able to move on. Consider for a second that there are felons everywhere that just haven't been caught yet, and then there's the guy who got caught on his first offense. Violent offenses are another story of course, but I think that in general people like to cling to their prejudices just a bit too hard. |

While large companies may have policies against hiring felons it is only a rule that a hiring manager can over rule. I did it while at IBM in management. HR would come and say no do to the background check but I would always go back my discussion with the candidate - we all need a second chance from time to time. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU TRY TO GET A JOB AT A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY AS MOST DON'T DO DRUG TESTING - PROFESSORS WON'T ALLOW IT AND MOST WON'T DO CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS. LOCALLY, NS STATE DOESN'T DO DRUG TESTING AND ONLY WITHIN THE LAST THREE MONTHS FINALLY STARTED DOING CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS. UNC DOES NEITHER LOCALLY. THOSE ARE THE MAOJR COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES AND THERE'S PLENTY MORE COLLEGES AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES AROUND. |
