Thanks...that makes me feel a little better!

I've known people who have taken the test over and over and not gotten in. They say you can re-test in 90 days....I say why bother? If you were honest the first time (and I was) you are most likely going to answer the same way again (unless you feel the need to lie) and end up with the same results.

I think I'll pass on any re-testing.

There are jobs there that do not require that entry testing so we'll see.

I believe what you are saying...Because I too have went the same route by giving honest answers, most test like these are not wanting the truth. You almost have to ask yourself when you read the questions, ok now what are they really wanting me to say here???? As far as breaking the law? Thats a trick question because everyone has broken the law at some point in their life. Like speeding, etc. The questions don't ask you how you broke the law....it will automactically incriminate you if you just answer by saying yes with no reason behind it. These are trick questions.....

oh and guys please don't bass me on my english........

Hey everyone. i just went through all the steps in this forum. I have an Art degree but was able to proceed through their interview process. It may have a lot to do with the way your resume is presented. By that I do not mean the glorious accomplishents of your past, but how you can fit EXACTLY into the job requirements of what you are applying for. As far as the first 12 minute test, it is a standard wonderlic test, which is basically in an IQ test format. It makes it next to impossible to study for. The character test was as easy as being yourself, taken that you are not some crazy, dishonest danger. I did answer yes to telling a lie and breaking the law. Moving violations of course. Before the phone interview, there a websites to help you prepare for behavior based interview questions. This really helped me, since some questions seem irrelvant at worst, and in the distant past at best.

Tom Hancock in Santa Ana, California said: Jake, I don't understand why they won't at least have you come in to take the test. I don't see anything that would have you declined. You have a degree, motivated and I'm sure intelligent...

I don't see why either, unless it is because I am overqualified like someone else said in a post.

The other day I read through some forums for engineers and some of them now think that overqualified is a politically correct way to say an applicant is too old. Who knows any more?! I guess companies want to keep us guessing on a "need to know basis."

From what I gather the turnover is very high for Progressive. I guess it is a good thing for me they did not call. If they have such a high turnover rate one can only deduce that
(1) they are too hard to please and they always fire people
(2) people can't stand it there and quit
(3) the kicker here--their tests do not work and they weed out the wrong people

To All, I was hired by Progressive and continue to work there on a daily basis. My position is a claims adjuster, you basically do all the work that a claim rep does at another insurance agency, with the additional appraisals and estimates, which you also handle. It's a one stop shop at Progressive, which by the way, has paved the way and changed the way all other large insurance companies now do business. As for what exactly they are looking for on the test. I can tell you this: dress professionally just to go and take that test. The individual at the front who will let you in, passes on you customer service to him and your appearance and demeanor are all screened as well. So, don't think, oh, just a nice pair of shorts and a collared shirt will do, dress to impress. Additionally, the test administrator has a larger role in screening you, and the real test has begun before you even begin your written test. There is no magic answer for this test and really no way to prepare, contrary to what some people may think, so just be honest and use common sense, overly honest answers that put you a predicament should probably be omitted. Be smart people, that's all. Progressive is looking for young, intelligent people who are charasmatic, driven and motivated. It's one thing to say you are these things, it's another to convey it during the interview process. I know the interview process really well because I made it through all 3 interviews. So, be extremely specfic, succinct and straight to the point. Also, try to show examples of how you are a flexible person, that's all I'm gonna say about that, believe me, these are 2 VERY CRITICAL components to Progressive's specific interview analysis. Lastly, be prepared to know your work history inside and out, your positions, and examples of YOUR situations where you experienced intense pressure of discomfort, and how did you handle it and what did you do to improve the situation. Practice other tough interview Q's.

You must be prepared for your interview, know your work experience inside and out. Show examples of flexibility and leadership in your past work experience. Show up for the written test in professional attire, yes, just to take the test. You are being screened from the moment you walk in to a progressive office for your test, by the way, believe it or not. They are looking for younger motivated, intelligent people and those who are striving for the top. It's one thing to say you are like this, it's another to convey it to an employer with out being over the top. Find your happy medium, prepare immensely for the interview, and another tip, it's a good idea to have at least 4 or 5 facts pertaining to the company, so do your research as well. I have already been hired, so if anyone has any specific q's, please feel free to ask, I'd be happy to hook all you people up with the insider info. I did a lot of research and preparation for my interviews. Here's a hint, the interview process is behavioral, so do your research with that. For those of you who take the hint, run with it, for those who don't understand what to do now, believe me, I'm not being an arrogant or mean person, but you won't make it through the interview unless you know how to proceed from here.. Good luck to all of ya, even you john hancock.

Howdy John,

I'm being scheduled for my oral interview with the branch/district managers next week, and I've been told by HR that there's 20 people applying, and only 5 openings, so I'd like to increase my chances as much as possible.

What I'd like to ask is if you recall what questions are asked or were particularly pertinent during your in-person oral interview(s)? I've been out of college awhile now and thus far not a bite from a professional job, so increasing my chances would mean the world to me.

Also, anything else you believe would be helpful to know would be appreciated.

Thanks much,

Some Guy

I have a question about the hiring process I was wondering if someone could answer. I'm currently running through the hiring process, but something's been bugging me. I too was told there were a variety of people applying for the position I was applying for, but it didn't quite add up.

What I mean is, the way Progressive conducts interviews, at least in the branch i've been going to, is very timely. Example.

Job is posted officially in early June.

X people apply in the first week and begin going through the hiring process.

Out of the initial applicants assume 4 make it through the entire application process.

June 5th: Application
June 6th: Called, appointment to take wonderlic scheduled.
June 10th: Wonderlic taken.
June 11th: Phone interviewer is called. Appointment is made.
June 15th: Phone interview passed. Background started.

The above dates are merely posted to give an idea on how fast Progressive, well, progresses through the hiring steps. What i'm mainly confused about is what happened to these early applicants? My final interview was scheduled for late July, and from the hiring information I was given, they must give you a decision of employment 48 hours after your final interview.

Were these early applicants forced to wait a month and a half from their phone interview to get a shot at an in-person, or were there earlier in-person interviews conducted?

It's just i've been given the impression that the advertisment was for X openings, and X openings remain a month and a half later, even with so many people applying, and undoubtedly a whole mess of people going through the process well before I did.

*shrug* *confused* It just bugs me is all =P. It doesn't sit right.

Sorry if the above is confusing :(

I probably should have added that the hiring process, to me, has been incredibly fast. The entire process, from initial application to final interview looks to be just about 2 weeks.

It just seems like the job openings should have been clearly filled well before now, a month and a half after the original posting, or at LEAST partially filled. But from what i've been told, all the positions are still up for grabs.

There, hope that clears it up. :P

Tell me a time when you dealt with a stressful situation and how did you handle it? What is on of your weaknesses and what are your strengths? What makes you a qualified candidate for this position over others? Tell me about a time when you were in a difficult position and was able to come up with an idea to overcome the obstacles? Hint: they aren't looking for a weakness, so be careful when answering that question. Look up on the internet to find great answers to apply in your interview. Remember, it IS a behavioral interview, research example behavioral questions on yahoo or another search engine. Believe me, you need to be prepared for that, some people think it's just a regular job interview, but in a behavioral interview they are looking for certain characteristics that you should demonstrate and clearly state. Be very specific and to the point, and very important for a Progressive interview, you have to show how you have been flexible in your previous experiences. Know your job history and key points to your previous held occupations. Know some fun facts about the company, and definitely practice the answer to the question, "why do you want to work for progress" - have a great answer but not over the top, stay powerful and succinct. That's all the info I can think of. Another question asked is what job did you enjoy the most and why and which job did you enjoy the least and why? AGAIN< be careful with your answers< there is more to it than just the job< duuuu> good luck to ya< b prepared and you definitely have a good shot> lastly< GO VERY PROFESSIONAL, THE BEST DRESSED IS ALREADY AT AN ADVANTAGE, BETTER MORE THAN LESS.

How much is the starting salary for claims adjuster? No need for exact numbers just a close range will do.

Well, R in WI Ingleside, that is a very subjective question, of course with a subjective answer. From my research on salary from websites, it appears beginners start at approximately 36,000, while they can offer more to those with more education, and with those with education and exerience of course. But, 36,000 is the standard to start for beginners, I was offered a bit more to start, it depends.

I passed the wonderlic IQ test or whatever it is. But I somehow failed their personality test. This seems like a strange result, since the test is supposed to assess your personality.
I was told to come in and try later since many employees failed the first few times.
But I don't understand how one learns how to pass such a test. I asked if I was failed for being inconsistent or for having the wrong personality type. The receptionist did not know and said she did not understand the test.

My previous employer gave me the same test, to assess applicants that were appropriate for administrative work, sales work, supervision, and those that cannot handle stress and were not the right person for the job. But there was no way to fail.

Like someone else said, what is the point of taking the test again? If you learn how to pass, that means you had to lie at some point. If one fails for being inconsistent, that means they were dishonest on the first round. But you'll never know why you failed.

I believe I am well qualified and will not accept a job I shouldn't take. I'd rather have someone tell me if I'm not the right personality to be a claims adjuster instead of urging me to learn how to bypass an inappropriate gatekeeping application.

The fact that I have over 25 years in customer service, technicial experience in the industry, a combat wounded veteran (yes I think this is important as we should support or veterans)and have the maturity to handle most all type of situations.
But I am not "young"

My phone interview took about 45 min. They did ask behavorial questions they also asked about past work experience and how they may relate to the claims position. Check your email I remember getting some prep information from the company on doing the phone interview. Progressive also looks for people to answer questions in the following format: What the problem was, what actions did you take, and what was the outcome of these actions. They like when you get to the point fast.

Yeah, I took a couple practice exams online with pretty much the exact same questions on the Progressive test and got them right. So, in my opinion, there looking to see how many questions you get completed and answer correctly. I even asked the guy before hand and he told me to just skip the questions that I don't know and answer the ones I did know. I did that, and know for a fact, that I answered at least 90% of the questions correctly. There just looking for a certain number completed correctly is all. Now that I know this information I'll should be able to pass this goofy test the next time I take it. But from what some of you guys are saying this company has a low retention rate.

So last Thursday I submitted my Resume to Progressive.com, the next day I got a call back to set up my Test. I took my both tests on Tuesday, had my Phone Interview the same day (she had to leave the room and call me from her office, lol) and everything seemed to go great. I got a tour of the facility and everything. I'm applying to be a Claims Contact Rep. They called back two days ago and I'm having my final interview tomorrow at 10am. I'm reading over everyones stuff and wondering why this is all going so fast for me- I have a friend that worked there and it took them a month to hire him. I have no college expierence, just a High school graduate who's worked retail the last 5 years. Is this weird to anyone else? O_o

The company is always hurting to get CLRU reps. These are the reps that take the initial call when a loss takes place. They take a little information from the people then assign the claim to a branch. I never done the work but I hear it is a pretty good position.

Hello Everyone:

I think that regardless of how well you prepare it is all about whether or not the person you are interviewing likes you not if you are qualified to do the job. I know someone that went through the testing. Received a message that they wanted to schedule a phone interview. Contacted and left messages for the recruiter for more than a week. The recruiter never contacted him. Finally, he called and was able to speak with a live person who scheduled the interview. This person spent days and days preparing for the phone interview only for the recruiter to NOT call at the scheduled time. They called the recruiter and she stated that she had been busy, the job that he wanted was filled, and that she would need to reschedule his phone interview if he wanted to be considered for a different location. He stated to her that he was concerned that the other location would fill up also and that he was more than willing to do the phone interview right then. She stated that she was already behind and supposedly wanted to give him sufficient time to answer the questions. When he finally was able to do the phone interview with him she told him that he did not pass because he did not use enough examples from his recent job although they were good examples.

What a bunch of crap! The whole process is a farce so do not get your hopes up.

I told him that he should file a complaint against that recruiter. If anyone wants to know who she is let me know.

I made it to about question 31 or 32 before I started skipping questions. I am so bad at math that I am amazed that I passed as well. Since no one else was in the room with me, it really helped me to say the questions out loud to myself and work it out, out loud while using the scratch paper they provide. I hope you have the same luxury- I know that when I was testing for Blue Cross Blue Shield there was a room of about 50 people taking it all at once and I wasn't able to use that technique. They use the same test, but it is in paper form. Also, my boyfriend said that with the EQ personality test you answer the questions with an add-on like you would read a fortune from a fortune cookie. When reading the questions to your self add "at work". He said that it works every time. So when it asks you if it is true that you have never lied in your life, you can answer that it is true- at work!
I thought it was both funny and thought provoking, because I bet that rule would really work! Anyway, I hope that this helps you.[/QUOTe/]

Dear Jess,

I wondered if you might have any advice for me. You were very lucky that you made it to the testing stage. I cannot even make it past the resume part. I have a Master of Public Administration degree that I just completed in May 2007 plus I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics with a history minor. I recently applied for a job in my area as an administrative secretary and on the web site under my resume it says not selected. However, I have a Master's degree and I am very good at Math. I scored 5.5 out 6 possible points on the analytical writing section of the GRE's as well. I am a little confused as to why my resume would not even be accepted for an interview unless they are thinking I may be overqualified. Any advice?

Or has everyone walked in unannounced and they let you take the test?

I tested, interviewed and interviewed again for the Customer Contact Center and got hired. The entire process took over a month. In fact, I had also applied for the same position that's training started earlier in the month but was not selected due to the fact that they weren't sure if my interview results and background check would be back by then. What they are looking for is Customer Service and a lot of it. You must have worked in a job that involved much critical thinking and decision-making. They looks for job stability because they do not want to invest the money in someone who will not be with the company long. During the background investigation they do call your past employers as well as call to verify your educational achievements. I hope this helps.

This is how it went for me:

1. Apply Online
2. Get a call from a recruiter to go take the tests.
3. Take a 12 minute Wonderlic test. If you pass that one they will give you the personality test. If you "pass" that one, they will take electronic fingerprints there and schedule a telephone interview with the same recruiter.
4. The telephone interview lasts about 45 minutes with Behavioral-Based Questioning.
5. The recruiter will call you back to tell you how he/she felt the telephone interview went and if impressed, will schedule you for 2 face-to-face interviews with the Hiring Managers for the department you are applying for. She also emailed me a link to a website that explained what Behavioral-Based Interviewing is and why it is used. (The small amount of information on the website was really not much help at all.)
6. Interview with one of the Hiring Managers for an hour, then the next for another hour. In the end, I felt as if I had been interrogated for the full 2 hours and was completely worn out. They do ask not only the same Behavioral-Based questions as the Recruiter did during the telephone interview but many more that pretty much branch off of those same questions. The second Hiring Manager will ask you just about the same questions but with a small twist. Be sure to listen carefully to each question and take your time to think before rushing to answer. You want to be as specific as possible about a situation, policy, job or person you have dealt with. They are looking for what's called the STAR in each of your answers...The "Situation," Task," "Action," and "Reaction."

They are looking for what's called the STAR in each of your answers...The "Situation," Task," "Action," and "Reaction."

...or "Results."
7. Within about a week or so you will hear back from your recruiter to let you know what the Hiring Managers reported back to him/her. During this time they will also be doing your background investigation.)If impressed, once the background investigation is complete, the recruiter will make you an offer.

???

I remember when I applied online. Their web page did not reject me nor accept me. I think I checked it again a week or two later, maybe three, but nothing new was listed for my applications; no rejection and no acceptance. I moved on, figuring they were not interested.

It has been a really long time since I applied, and I just logged in right now. Since the job submittal history goes back only 120 days, my application history has been cleared out. Guess I'll have to start back at square one.

Here are the three jobs that I applied for but [never] but never received a response online [within 2-3 weeks of time of application].

That is very easy on Progressives part; do not touch applications, clears out in 120 days. Applicant must start all over at the beginning.

Do you have any idea what types of pay scales Progressive has for various positions? It sounds like they are more rigorous than the police when it comes to the application process [or about the same]. I know because I have applied for police jobs.

There is mismatch here because with a police job you deal with emergency situations and must make split-second decisions. You do not have the luxury of reviewing a decision and go back to change it if needed. Seems like an extremely unbalanced selection process to me.

But what do I know, I'm just a dummy that wasn't good enough to even take the wonderlic test with them. Put aside my police experience, my previous numerous wonderlic test taking, my business experience, and my college degree.

I have read through the selection process details located in the career section. There is a paragraph that explains how resumes are kept in a database. It also explains how Progressive Insurance recruiters frequently review this database of resumes.

So, has anyone here ever received a call from a recruiter about consideration for a position that they initiated?

Thank you to everyone for the help and information.

MommyOf2Angels in Cleveland, Ohio,

I just reviewed my online resume and profile. I noticed at the end there is a field where I can insert a referral number and Progressive employee name.

Do you have any idea how this works, and how it comes into play when a person applies online?

Yes, I read this from a section on employee benefits.

But what I wonder, and hopefully you can provide some details [chem in Wilson, or anyone else] on how much weight is placed on knowing an employee and to what extent Progressive discusses the job applicant with the employee.

Can anyone provide details as to what Progressive recruiters ask an employee friend of the applicant?

I'm sure they take into account who you referred. So you want your referral to be a good employee. The time someone used me as a reference I got an email with questions on what kind of person the applicant was and what kind of work or projects I have worked with them on.

Claims Adjuster Trainee
Coplye, Ohio
Full Time Regular

This is like the Claims Adjuster position I applied for in Copley, but in 2006. The reason I chose to apply for this position is because it requires a Bachelor's degree and I have similar experience.

Part of the ad states this:

We're looking for someone who can work effectively with customers who've been in an accident while keeping an eye on the details.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Investigate the circumstances surrounding auto accidents.
- Estimate the cost of repairs and value of injury claims.
- Settle the claim.
