You're never have to join a union. Some sites don't even have unions.

I started 18 months ago as a Sr. SW engineer. I had a M.S., B.S. in Computer Science and 14+ years experience plus an active TS/SCI clearance. I started out at $95,000/ yr. + benefits, which are very good. Standard 401k, health insurance and pension eligibility after 2 years+ plus Flex work schedule. However, they WILL work you VERY hard and people there are bright (and demanding)
