I am a staff pharmacist at a store that has suffered numerous armed robberies in the past 18 months. Zero has been done to increase security measures and recent staff cuts have me behind the counter up to 3 hrs per shift, alone (generally at night)
There are three other reasons I am disturbed at falling tech hrs allotted to the pharmacy department:
1. This pharmacy's script count is rising, rather than dropping (although corporate keeps insisting that they have not reduced their official tech hr. to script count ratio)
2. We are forced to keep drive thru open plus the counter, with one pharmacist and no techs on at night. which means I have two lines of customers, the phones, the processing, the counseling, counting, paper-work and closing procedures to worry about. Let alone the fact that the drive-thru itself seems to further the idea to patients that they should expect orders to be processed in the time it takes to process a fast food order.(I am under constant pressure to be faster, & AT SOME POINT THIS IS UNREASONABLE AND WILL INCREASE # OF MED ERRORS!!!!) techs help alleviate this pressure and are an "extra set of eyes" in terms of spotting errors and suspicious characters hanging around
3.We have public restrooms, unlocked at all times, adjacent to the pharmacy waiting area. The view of the bathrooms from the front of the store is blocked by the 'Liquor outlet' department. AND OH YEAH, WE HAVE NO OPERABLE SECURITY CAMERAS AND NO WORK ORDERS TO UPGRADE !!!! The presence of the drive-thru is a fortunate feature for a would-be armed robber because an idling get away vehicle doesn't look so suspicious.
We are located right next to a network of on/off ramps to a major highway too, which makes catching the assailants difficult DOES ANYONE AT COPORATE CARE ABOUT SAFETY FOR RA EMPLOYEES OR CUSTOMERS? We need more staff in pharmacy at all the stores and better security (probably everywhere but DEFINITELY at this store)

Jim,
Just tonight we confronted a shoplifter in our Rite Aid store, and it became a frightening situation to say the least. You are very correct when you say that the security issues are lacking. We have no live video feed, the black panels on the ceiling are just reflective dummy glass. With Cut backs happening all over the USA, more people are taking atvantage of stealing. Store associates cannot be in 17 places at one time while stocking, running register etc. It's no wonder the stock price is well under a quarter.
Good Luck To you.

Oh my Can I ever feel your pain. This is the type of thing I see in my store too. I HATE the Drve Thru--it is the worst invention, more med errors are done at that window according to prevention magagzine. I can only think that the department of Labor and industry in your state would be able to help you.
