I was suspended pending an investigation. So I had my interview with the investigator at the beginning of January. He told me that HR would call me with the decision within 4 weeks. Now its been 8 weeks and they still haven't called me back. I'm still on the schedule if that means anything. I called the store manager and he told me they haven't told him anything. Can they just fire you without ever telling you? What should I do?

"At-will" employment means employer (or employee) can terminate employee's employment at any time without notice and/or for no reason - but (DUH) employer has to inform employee that he/she is terminated, i.e. fired.

Do you belong to the union? If so, you might discuss your suspension with your union steward. You could also call Safeway HR.

I'm not part of the Union. When I talked to the manager and he gave me the number to HR. Every time I call HR the Lady NEVER picks up. I leave her a message and she never calls back. It's like she's completely ignoring me on purpose.

Displaced: He or she didn't say why he or she was suspended. We don't know the whole story. He or she could file for unemployment, but then they would have to investigate it and find out why he got susspended.

I don't know about the unemployment laws there in Virginia. But here in Pennsylvania, you cannot collect unemployment if you were fired for willful misconduct, if you're self-employed, if you quit your job without a necessary and compelling reason, if you refuse to accept a offer of suitable, you're not available to work, or refuse to apply for suitable work. If they deny you benefits, then you can file an appeal.

I also believe that Pennsylvania is an at-will state too.

What were you suspended for? I would think if they planned to fire you they would have told you by now. Are you still being paid a salary by the company? If not, you better file for Unemployment Benefits. I would show up at the company and demand an explanation as to what is going on. This way you know what your next move is.

I tried so hard to get her to tell me what the decision was gonna end up being. She told me that her and the investigator are gonna review the tape and her supervisor will make the decision. She told me it's the last step. I'm wondering what the other steps were. Does anybody know?
