I just got hired and they said show up Tuesday for work- even though the background check wasn't done. They also said no drug test. Is it because they are hurting during the holiday season?

I disagree. Any company that jerks people around like that, before they're even hired, is a bad bet. It's cruel to get someone's hopes up and take their time (and any money it takes to get there) and not show. It's very bad for morale and very bad karma.

Don't waste your time. If you are a sales person or cashier. It will be all about opening credit accounts. Your schedule will depend on credit accounts and one day you will have next to no hours. It's bad.

Worked at the same store. Ryan was correct. Pathetic managers. Store manager used to tell us in staff meetings he wanted us to be ranked in the middle. I wanted to put a sign over his office door that said "Strive to be average". What a moron.

Well Sunngoddess13, at least you got an interview. With an online name like Sungoddess13 I'm not sure how Sears was able to pass on you. This scenario you have presented sounds like a classic example of "you didn't get the job." I'm positive that it was Sears fault that you didn't get the job, however. How did your interview at Hot Topic go? or was it Pac-Sun?

Man, performance based scheduling, what kind of company would do that? Oh wait, pretty much every single one on the planet. Make money for your company, wherever you work, and it will reward you. Fail to capitalize on opportunities, and suffer the consequences.

i have a similar experience with the hiring process at sears that has honestly left me very angry - i go my scheduled time, have two interviews with a dept manager and store manager, told i will be hired if i pass the drug test and background check, go take the drug test that same day in the pouring rain taking 3 hours back and forth...then don't hear back, i try calling the store and speaking to the hr dept and the phone just rings and rings no matter what time i call...i cant easily get back to the store so I have no choice but to assume they didn't see something they liked...i know i passed the drug test and my background is clean so i am very confused...i HATE that no one in HR answers the phone when you call, that irks me to no end

well.. Heres my SEARS experience.
I applied for sears yesterday by internet. I completed the application and got to the final step saying i can choose my interview time and date. I was happy. Anyways i choose the date and time i wanted for today at 5:00pm (10.10.2008) I was getting ready to answer questions and practicing what i might say since this is my official first interview. went to go get a decent haircut and came back home. i decided to call HR at sears to CONFIRM my interview at 5:00. They aswered quickly! i asked them about my interview and the lady told me that the person doing the interviews was all booked up to today even though i had MY interview that day at 5:00. So i asked her if there was a different day i can re schedule. Then she asked me for what position i was applying for and i said cash register. She then told me they had all the people needed for cash registers and hanged up! HOW RUDE!

After reading the comments on here I decides to call and confirm my interview time,Oct.22 11 am called at 9 am. Got right through to HR. Great!!1 It's a small store, in a local mall, one floor . Was asked which job I was applying for (Receiving Assoc.) and was told that there are no openings at this time at Sears.Althought if you search jobs on this site it list 8-9 different jobs including the Receiving Job. Was told it was up to me if I wanted to still come in, but there would not be anyone there to interview me. WTF! They will keep my App.on file for 60 days and then I could reapply at that time.

Anoymous in Richmond, Virginia said: It happened to me also. I scheduled the interview online, showed up, and there was no manager present to interview me. I was very angry and realized then that I did not want to work for them. About a month or so later, someone called from Sears to schedule an interview. I NEVER responded! You cannot think people are going to accept any kind of treatment. They would not want me to treat a customer/client that way.

Sears ( Monroe, NC)did the same thing to me. Not once, not twice but three times! I drove over 30 minutes for the first interview only to find the HR manager as very rude. She told me the job had been filled weeks ago! The second time was basically the same thing. I should have known better the third time. This time I called before driving the distance. ( My date and time was also via internet) AGAIN, VERY RUDE. She stated the job was filled SIX weeks ago. I asked WHY is it still posted on the internet. No answer .
I found the toll # through customer service to complain. Sorry I can't give the number. However, if alot of us call, maybe something could be done!?
I spoke to John. I told him what had happened and he said, let me put someone else on the line. I waited 30 minutes. No ONE came on the line.
Am I pissed? HHHHHHH yes!!!! Pisses me off that I wasted my time and gasoline.
I have decided I would know longer shop at Sears because of this. It's the principal of it. Screw me once, twice, but, come on three times? I will warn everyone about this.
I found out anyway by reading forums the pay sis, TERRIBLY, LOW!

i applied online about 2 months ago, i scheduled my interview 6 weeks later, as this was the earliset time available. i got there for my interview, it went well, the manager in charge of hiring for the hardware dept wasnt there...i was told she would call me, i waited 2 days and went back to the store to see if she was in, she was, got another interview, it also went well. was told i would have to meet the store manager the next day at 9:30. i showed up 5 minutes early and found out he wasnt scheduled until 12:30 that same day. i came back at 1 pm, and got to meet him, the interview went well, was offered a job in electronics, (i have over 20 years hardware sales experience) but figure they want me in electronics. i take the drug test and pass, i am now waiting for the phone to ring to let me know when to show up on wednesday. all this and i have also been offered a position with frito lay...what are the chances that sears will allow me to work at both jobs? i need to work on the weekends for frito, the weekdays for sears. sears told me originally that i needed to be very flexible about my hours, but as a seasonal pert time employee, does that really matter. sears wont guarentee me a full time job, and after the holidays how good will the sales be in electronics? the fito lay job is only 2 days a week, but will go on forever, with a simialar possibility of going full time...any thoughts? all would be appreciated

Went to the interview and was offered the job. I interviewed with the store manager and the softlines manager for 2 hours. Took a quick tour with SM and then they met with HR . Waiting to receivie firm offer mid week next week!
I am leaning towards taking the job. Right now in My Area there have been 300-400 people laid of in the last month alone because of the depressed housing market. (Timber based econemy)
I have another interview with another company on Tues. Higher pay, but the hours are really bad. 2 shifhts per day that rotate every two weeks.6am to6pm and the the second shift is 6 pm to 6am
Was told my hours would be were 35-40 per week at Sears ,which is what I used to have at my last job.
Lots to think about!

Interview Disappointment in Seattle, Washington

Applied online, entry level cashier Sears, Puyallup. Store has jobs listed in EVERY dept. Prompted to choose a date for interview & selected a.m. for 2 days later. Phoned the store to confirm the day before - No answer in HR, just ringing - not even a voice mail option. Phoned back to an onsite dept (small appliances), somehow got sent to the service phone center, transferred back to the store to a sales assoc. & then a manager who stated "I'll see you tomorrow" in regard to my scheduled interview. Arrived to a dimly lit HR with 5 empty desks, 15 minutes early, one employee used the copy machine & then left, head down, no greeting, no "May I help you". Then, a man who appeared to be the electronics manager bustled in, checked a few items on one of the desks & finally, before leaving asked if I'd been helped. When I explained I had a cashier interview at 11:00, he stated that manager doesn't arrive to work until 2:30 pm & he'd have to get my information and have her contact me in the afternoon. As you can guess. Noone phoned me from Sears that afternoon, so I finally phoned the store, my call was somehow transferred out to the service phone center (again!) who then transferred me back & someone in pick/up-delivery answered & told me that he didn't think the Cashier Mng had arrived to work yet. I called the store again & this time reached an apparel associate who said Yes, the cashier mng is here & transferred me to her. When the manager picked up, she told me that the online appointment is only an availability check - not a true interview appointment, so I read it to her "You are scheduled for interview, this date/time" & also said I had confirmed the appt by phone with a store manager yesterday. "Oh" -then nothing. I asked, "Is the cashier position still available?" long silence, then "um, yah 1 is" - then nothing. I asked, "May I interview for it?" long silence - "I'll have to call you later."-no apology for the missed meeting, whole store poorly run! sad to see.

This is very true. Also if your in sales, you have to consistantly sell 10% or more in extended warrantys. (10% of your gross sales). And we cant forget about our email captures that we have to get from every customer.

i had a great interview experience when i applied to sears. I got to set up my own interview and I went there a few minutes before my scheduled time and waited in the HR office then the HR came in, and we chatted for about 15 minutes and she told me that she would call me sometime soon. It was a very postive experience.

I once applied at the Sears in Brockton, Ma. I was first interviewed by a woman that I believe is the HR Manager or an employee of that office and she informed me this would be a first part to the interview process.

I applied for cashier and had even been told that daytime cashiers were needed, which fits my availability, experience. But I was passed off to a shoe dept. manager. I got a second interview with that manager. Let me say this, I was stunned when she walked over to me. I had never seen a manager that looked like she hadn't even had her 18th birthday, LOL. (I am in my 20's, so I admit that I never had a younger manager compared to my age bracket. )

Appearences are deceiving, but she happened to have no personality. Very unfriendly and stared down at the desk for long periods of time, literally looking at paper before asking a question. It was a bit of an odd interview style.

She then said that she hadn't interviewed anyone in awhile "and, I feel out of my element right now...."

Anyway, the interview wrapped up by her telling me that she needed to confer with her store manager before an offer of employment. She added she wasn't sure if he would want to interview me as well... She then said he wouldn't be around for a couple of days, but she said point blank: "I'll definitely be calling you back."

I never had a job interview, except ones where a job offer was made that day, where the manager tells you I'm 'Definitely' calling you back and then really doesn't...

She even said, "So, this is the number I should call you back at in a couple of days?", as she pointed to my printed application. Bottom line, if you aren't going to hire me, fine. But lying/misleading a person is alittle fustrating.

Especially for a tired, laid-off worker right now in this economy. That's me.

Oh, one more thing.... I wasn't aware of the compensation system in shoes at this particular Sears in Brockton, Ma

Min. Wage in Massachusetts is 8.00 an hour, but the system at this Sears's shoe area is 3.50 an hour base with commission. But the commission % is different based on the type of shoe.

i hate sears Complain to sears
On 15 may 2009 I went to sears to inquire about my third interview in shoes department in Cerritos mall, went I reach to human resource department there was nobody there went I was returning from the human resource department a lady (who works in sears) met me on my way since she knew me, from my previous interviews she helped me in showing me adds that they have openings in certain departments and told me to reapply in different department I thanked her and went to apply in sales.
After completing my application I went different shops in mall. Again I come back to see my cousin who is working in sears, she told me that one of the management stuff was finding me “MARY”. I was so happy I was thinking she maybe going to take my third interview, when I went to her, she took me in a room and said to me that “we are not hiring you” without any reason, i ask her reason and she told me that thier are not hiring. i really want to complain this to labour department about mary

I had identical application/assessment/interview issues with Sears. I applied, passed the assessment, scheduled the interview online 30 days in advance - first avail, received email confirmation and sent a follow-up written confirmation letter w/a copy of my resume to the Arrowhead location where I was to be interviewed. When I arrived there on the designated day, they had no record, they were not hiring for that position, they refused to interview me and and referred me to an alternate location said to be hiring for the same position. Upon calling the alternate location I was advised otherwise. I made nine attempts to call Arrowhead and was given voicemail each time. I filed a complaint with National Customer Relations and haven't heard from that location since.

The incident encouraged me to file a complaint with the Dept of Labor, which I am waiting for a response. As such, I am asking anyone with similar experiences to email me directly (pgh_penn@hotmail.com) about their apply on-line experiences as a form of proof for the Dept of Labor to initiate an investigation on the application and hiring process of sears. I haven't found any forum but this one that could provide leads on the topic. Please note; you must have completed your application at the store or on their website for me to proceed and be as detailed as you can. I would greatly appreciate everyone's support on this issue.
