pattyjamas in Charlotte, North Carolina said: TSG unit---bad news. May I inquire as to how you circumvented the stabbing and walking upon? I am a curious observer of these postings and most of the resentment people are expressing can be attributed to behaviors from allowing ourselves to let others treat us badly and allowing ourselves to be caught up in the "political" environment for one self serving reason or another. You can not please everyone all the time and sometimes the weak get walked on if they are not strong enough to stand up. Did you ever see people in a stampede? Not everyone walks upright. Sometimes we get caught up in the "poor me" syndrome. Did you take a good look around you to see who was successful and ask why, or do you sit idly by and let things happen to you? What do you do to stand out as a success? Sometimes a sincere observation of sucess will give you a clue as to what is coming at you long before it gets there so you can prepare yourself and get out of firing range. Next chance you get to make these types of observations, do take the time. Align yourself with these people and make yourself known for the values which most closely mirror theirs as long as it does not compromise your moral fortitude. If this is a problem, you will have a long row to hoe to get to where you are going. |

Is anyone familiar with human resources operations? I am interested in a VP of HR position that has been posted. |

In my opinion, if you have read the posting, you should be able to know what is required by the employer. If not, do some more research on the company to learn about the culture. Also check out their competition. This will give you more insight to the business climate and possible other opportunities. As for the job, is your background is compatable with the requirements plus any additional formal training or positions which can document your credentials/experience? If so, you should already have the working knowledge to know what the legal/admisitrative and technical requirements are of the various aspects of this position, as well as the daily responsibilites of the job function at the VP level. If you have had relevant or equivalant experience with this position, I suggest you throw your hat in the ring and see what comes of it. If you can meet the educational criteria and most of the requirements but lack some minor skills, give it a whirl just to see what happens, at the least it is another email to add to your list of contacts and at most you may gain an interview to learn more and perhaps a job. Good luck to you! |

Also to those of you interested in learning more about the climate at these types of large corporate media environments, there is a book out there by Mary Foley who is an ex AOL employee. It gives you some teriffic examples of the early days and how the climate has changed. I met her at a seminar, she is fantastic. The name of the book is "Bodacious". Very insightful and inspiring. |

It is TSG as I said. Technical Services Group. There is another group called TGS that has to do with Turner and usually relates to Compliance issues. I should know since I worked there. As to the person who said to align themselves with successful people who perhaps know how to navigate politics. Good idea of course. Also great idea to know what your strengths and weaknesses are and improve upon the weaknesses. However everything is not always black and white. There are great companies to work for, good companies, acceptable companies and toxic companies. Within companies of any type we all know there are good/bad managers, good/bad departments, etc... I am only relating my experience in working on a floor with about 100+ people in a specific department managed by directors/VP whose goal in life was to circumvent process and look good to senior management. But that is life and we all especially me need to get used to it. Patty |

There is nowhere more toxic to work than Time Warner Cable at any NC location. Management makes the Machevillians look like altar boys - they eat their own. EVERYTHING is all about them as they perch on their lofty salaries and bonuses. Mere peons, employees and customers alike, are viewed with sniffs of disdain. You will be naught but a minion and do not ever think differently! |
