I have over ten years of law enforcement experience.From private security at a hospitol, to a state law enforcement position.I applied for a L.P position close to a year ago.I have not heard anything from TJX HR . The job I applied for in Plymouth is still being posted .Do I have too much experience or am I being pushed aside because of my L.E experience ?

Too much experience means too much money that they don't want to pay in salary.

LE experience doesn't necessarily translate into a LP experience. I hired some former LE people and some were either to gung ho, not gung ho enough, or very lazy.

Sometimes it hard to break some old habits, so I tried to stay away from those applicants. I normally preferred people who wanted to become LE and were testing for jobs but not yet hired.

You have too much experience to be in LP - both Rob and Former LP are right. that being said, LP Mgrs contend mostly with shrink, analysis, etc., where LP detectives are the "security" guards of the store - in that aspect, LE is right on for detectives and agents but may not be right for management and assset protection.

Bear in mind Rob that retailers really dont care about shrink; they dont want to pay for good employees and are probably threatened by your LE experience. LP has a high turnover via people who start and quit after only a few months b/c the stores treat them so badly. The field is littered with less than competent people at the store and district levels which is evident by postings that seem to never fill (Home Depot being the worst). For years retailers have refused to address this problem and are now paying the price in that they are unable to fill the hundreds (and in some cases) thousands of vacancies in LP.

Take your LE experience and do security work...you will thank yourself later. SL

the stores dont care about shrink (Rob can relate) people in LP are those who coulnd make it in real LE for various reasons;

I work in LP right now for the company. The detective position is a little above minimum wage with little promotion availability. The department and company are in the process of eliminating a lot of jobs. Don't try it. We also have a huge turnover rate both on the LP side and operational side.

My husband has over 15 years experience in retail LP. One thing has been in common with each of his employers. They all look at LP as a loss PRODUCING department because nothing they do drive sales. The load each investigator and manager down with so many stores, they only have time to run around putting out fires, not pro-actively affecting the shrink. And then they hold LP accountable for shrink. Hmmm... sounds to me like someone never completed Business 101. In fact, his former employer would put people who confessed to theft back to work because they didn't want to be bothered with hiring someone else. Gosh, I wonder why the shrink was high?

So now he's looking for another job when his former employer decided they could get someone else to take the job at a much lower rate of pay. "At Will" ain't it great? An employer can fire you for a perfectly illegal reason, but because of the "At Will" clause, they will never be caught. You have to be a part of a "protected" group to have any protection against this.

One year after this, he is still looking. No one wants to pay for his hard earned expertise.

LP is good to a point, but I think stores are still lacking big time. I've been in retail for 10yrs and have about 5 years experience in LP. It still amazes me today, the STORES haven't learned yet that you need some type of security system in your store. Then you wonder why, you have high shrink and such a theft problem.
