toyotahopeful in Guelph, Ontario said: I don't know what takt time is, can you elaborate?

Takt time is basically a cycle time. If takt time is 57 seconds, then every 57 seconds a new car comes off the line, and it is how much time you have to do your tasks on each car. They have everything worked out to the second, so if you screw up on one car (ie - drop a bolt, pick it up may take 5 seconds) then you have to make the time up. And they don't figure in time to take a drink. The best advice I can give is listen to the people who train you online (not in the training center) as they have done the job repeatedly and they can give you tips on how to save yourself some time and work.

I had my computer test on the 21st & have heard nothing yet. I applied in September of 09. I am fearful that they have a HUGE number of applicants in the system that are ahead of us & it may take years to get through the process.

i believe im late for you nikita, i hope you did alright. if you read all of the tips in here you just be fine...they have so many different sets of questionaire anyway and its hard to remember the questions specially im so nervous that time. anyways, just what i've said just be yourself and answer the question with all honesty. it is all situational/behavioural type interview and your answer will depend on how you handle a certain situation base in your experiences in the past.they will call your reference right after or the next day if they determine you fit-in into their team. good luck and dont forget to pray!

First post, this is a great msg board for this topic. I had my computer test in Oct 07, my work sim on Dec 15, and interview tomorrow at 8 am. Just to give some news, my buddy signed his contract today to start Jan 8. He was told that they are still in need of hiring 600 more people. They needed like 880 ppl, and have only hired 280 thus far. He was told that he's in the third batch of hires so there is still a long way to go. Apparently the majority of hires are given the choice between Woodstock or Cambridge, and he starts at 23.60 plus shift premium which puts him up over 25.00 an hour. Good luck everyone!!!

Just got the call today, start work Jan 18th in Woodstock. I was given a offer for cambridge for Jan 4th but turned it down because I wanted Woodstock and I am glad I did because I am now going to be working less then 10 min from my house instead of 40 min to cambridge. Good luck to everyone!

I currently have a decent full time job, but I don't mind moving,
I am not sure if it is worth it.
I am a very good worker.
I know the whole temporary worker thing, that you're here one day and gone the next.
Do you get any days off, sick days.
What if things slow down, and the contracts get laid off, and 3 months go by, will they be called back, when things get going again
I just like to find out what the work environment/people are like?
Any idea how many contract and pernament are there right now, not including the new 800, And have they actually been hiring pernament recently?
thank you, and feel free to include more info

Hey Billybob. I will try to answer your questions the best I can. If you take the job at Toyota you should be prepared for the following: 9hr days & some Saturdays (2 have been announced for February), no holidays except for summer shutdown in July and Christmas shutdown, and don't expect to get permanent (fulltime hire) for a couple of years. Fulltime hires are based on when you start with the company on contract, so the hire they just did before Christmas was for contracts that started from Sept '07 - Dec '07. There is no set schedule on when these hires will happen, and how many will get fulltime. You shouldn't worry about getting laid off if things happen to slow down again. I heard there were less than 100 total that were off for a few months (January to April) and they all came back last summer. The plants in Cambridge and Woodstock are building vehicules that are very popular in the North American market, so demand for these will likely remain high for some time, which means more work for us. As far as sick days go, yes you get 10 days to use, however the rules have changed this year and sometimes you need a doctors note (unless you say your child or spouse is sick). I hope this information helps, and if you have any other questions please ask.

Hello everyone.
If anyone is knowledgeable enough and can comment my questions, I would appreciate it.
Basically I would like to find out what is the difference between Cambridge and Woodstock plant? I imagine Woodstock plant is newer therefore better layout, amenities, etc. Are there any other reasons? I am asking because I red some comments in which people ,(some with seniority), were quite eager to go to Woodstock.
I would imagine there has got to be more and better reasons for one to drive 50-60k in the middle of nowhere one way every day, from Cambridge or Kitchener say, which is a bigger city...Thank you!

The only reason why I think people with senority that live in kw and want to work in Woodstock would be the fact that they have been on straight days for a year and a half. Woodstock is not running as fast as Cambridge North, but it's not like you have time to sit around waiting for the next car.

Hi rooz11.If you see some earlier coments u can see that they usually check only 2 references. If you didn't do good on interview they wouldn't call references, and I think you would not put somebody who you don't trust as reference. So I think you should just be patient.

You can wear cargo/khaki pants (no buttons exposed) and you have to wear long sleeve shirt (a lot of guys wear the long-sleeved t-shirts). The company provides your boots, glasses, bump cap, kevlar gloves, etc. When you start you can order 5 items of clothing from the company (shirt, pants, etc), but you won't get them for a few weeks. The other thing you can do in weld is get on their coverall program. You can get more info on this during orientation. The work in weld isn't too bad, but depends on your area. It's nice in the summer because it's air conditioned where some of the other areas aren't. You still have to wear pants and long sleeved shirts in the summer, but the a/c helps. Good luck. If you have any other questions please ask.

Hi .. I'm offered a contract for 3 months starting January 18th. Does anyone know what the percentage is of permanent hires? What is the time frame for renewing contracts? Can contract positons go longer than 2 years? What happened to all the contract people they let go last February 2009?

Well I was a task and term employee from 2006 till 2008 then never called back. I was in south. Just reapplied and am going through the process again. Instead of making the top wage if i get back in i will be down like 10 dollars an hour!!! They don't have to rehire you if you are task and term and it was just starting to take a down turn when our contracts were finished. they said we would be called back and never were!!!

Hi flgirl .. Thank you for your response ..
After two years of proving yourself to be a worthy employee, you think they would automatically recall you. Or i have to assume there is a low percentage of people hired full time? Can contracts be renewed after 2 years? ( I think there may be a government mandate to not exceed 2 years regarding contract positons) Do you know anyone that were hired full time in which you worked with? Were you able to get EI?

yes i got ei. After the first task and term which was a 1 year contract we were off for 3 months. We were told we were going to get the regular 3 month contracts then again were offered another 1 year. Again it was at christmas time and after that we were told we would be called and never was. I called and said when a 3 month was available i would be called. I never missed a day and did every bit of overtime. I applied again just as a joke and got a reply to come back for the computer testing. Same as last time but quicker. Not sure if i want to go back since they have changed all the pay now. I was in paint north for the first year then south for the second. I will do the testing and see what happens. Good luck with your job their.

It can take up to 3 years to get in there full time depending on how busy they are.

when you are a contract worker you get your 1 week shutdown in the summer and your christmas week which you get paid for stat days. you don't get paid for the summer shutdown.Yes the group that started before us got hired as they were 3 month contracts and had more time in then us cause we had 3 months off so we were short. they go by how many weeks they come up wit h a number. it could take as long as 3 or even less than 2. Not fun being a contract worker in there don't get sick they dont like people taking time off. I am in my late 40's and not sure if i want to go back now. I will do the testing and if i get in i will have to make a decision. I was making almost 30 when i left now will start at 23 i hear. i am doing my computer test on tuesday night then going away for 3 weeks so if i get another shot it better be after that. What area are you going to. I was in north paint then went to south side. I was never in assembly but heard it was awful. Well good luck.
