Screener positions are safer than Admin positions. I would access the usajobs.gov website and select your state/city. All the federal jobs in your area are posted to this website. You HAVE to apply on-line. If you are selected to move further, the TSA recruitment center will either email you or contact you by phone to move to the next step. If you are still interested, you will go to a location assigned by them in your area and take two computer tests (this will take approx. 1-1/2 hours). IF you pass these tests, the recruitment center generally lets you know immediately by email. Your next email will be a confirmation link that you wish to go further and accept a contingency offer. If you accept, it may take some time, but TSA HRServices (Arlington, VA)will contact you to set up an interview at your airport). An extensive background is done and once all of that is completed, you will go away to school (near your location) and train for approximately 10 days. All in all, the whole process can take up to 3 months. If you are a female, you will have a greater chance of getting on than a male. I understand (for the most part) you will automatically start part-time), but depending on the size of your aiport and turnover, it may not take long to become full-time. The hourly rate is good ($12.50+) in this area (Roanoke, VA), you will accrue annual leave time and sick leave time immediately and can also apply for Federal benefits (which are REALLY good). Pls. let me know if you have any further questions, and I hope this helps! what does this computer test consist of?..please let me know. |

I worked as a TSO as well for about 4 years, starting when the aiports federalized. I guess it was not a bad first job, I did buy a new car, get my own place and left with a good amount too rollover from the 401k-TSP which is a excellent investment plan.

You're so right, TSA is pitiful with their standards... They expect to much from an employee, and they will fire your ass quick in a heart beat if they wanted to... You have to take test after test after test like regular homeland security officers.. I have a friend that protects the Us boarder from Mexican immigrants on the Us Mexico boarder line in south Texas... They want you to not owe anything"come on people we're in America" 2/3 of Americans owe credit big time! and the show stopper! all this for 12.50 an hour? lmfao!.. I make 17.00 an hour, i work under but not for Homeland Security and I make so much more...I would rather become a deputy making 19-25.00 a hr. Homeland security's approval requirements are way to high, and they wine and cry that they don't have the man power to fight the war against the scum bag drug lords... My advise to you homeland Security lower your standards.. No, there isn't. I took the test today, and failed.. it's a really difficult test, especially the part when you have to do x-ray images... the test was rediculously hard, especially the last part, because everything was bleded in... wow, what a pain in the rear, you can't expect anything less from homeland security.. they pay chump change, and make their test hard to pass...

Marilyn Hanns in Denver, Colorado said: Is there a way where you can take a practice test.....or the test before hand? Unfortunately no, the images are tough. I personally just took the test again and failed it. I was so disappointed! They do give you a few images to look at prior to the real test, but they don't tell you if you guess it correctly. I think it's a good memorization test, and my memory is not that good. They give you 6-8 items to memorize for about 30 seconds and then go from screen to screen asking you if you see these items in this garbled up mess (to try and resemble an image of a suitcase) and it's hard. It you fail, they give you 6 months to retry depending on whether there are openings in your area or not. I hope this helps. |

I applied on Feb 5 of this year (2011) a position for a TSA Inspector (Canine Explosives Detection Unit) through the USAJobs website. Filled out all the necessary info, scanned and made PDF's of my transcripts of my Bachelors Degree, and I guess playing the waiting game. I can check my progress on this Candidate Dashboard module. Anyhow I'm sure you are all familiar. It's just that I got an email a month later on March 5th, saying that my app is finally received and is undergoing more review. It's going to be a while until a phone call I'll get. I really look forward to this job/career, having a four legged coworker/partner alongside with me, having a govt issued vehicle and doghouse, and having a pet again (had a Terrier of 15 years just passed, hard to cope with until after about a week and a half). My questions, for those of you who are employed currently with the TSA, wherever you're located, preferably the same position that I'm hoping for (or screener also), are about the background investigation and reference check and address check (where you lived in the past 10 years); is there an actual list of questions they ask? I read on a separate forum elsewhere there's an online background application or questionaire and it takes about 3 hours to complete. Is this something needing to be done online? is it timed? or is it a PDF file that you fill out on the computer, and print, and bring with you to the next meeting or just submit online electronically? I can tell you that I have a clean background and never broken any law. As far as giving addresses that are unique that you have lived at in the past 10 years, again on a forum that I've read about, you have to include the information of 3 people that have known you at each address... Would these have to be the same 3 people, different people? I lived at a college dorm, then an apartment, and then back at my family's, being the same place where I was born. Do these 3 people have to be neighbors? Friends? |

Do you have to be a citizen in order to be considered for a TSA position or the GC is also applicable? Thanks. |

Hi thanks for sharing such valuable info, I'm to take the CBT in March and was wondering if you knew of any online site that you can practice the screening/scanning part of test. I understand it can be difficult to pick out objects. |

I do have a question? I have applied with the TSA for the security job. I received my invitation for the computer test. What does the test consist of,is it hard and do part time employees get many hours. I must bring home over $700 every 2 wks to improve my self. I will graduate from Homeland Security in the fall and interested in improving myself. I also seen where you advise females get on easier! How come? |

Hi WC, Every city/airport is different but I can give you some advice. Part time work hrs are 25 hrs a week or 50 hrs a pay period. Depending on your airport you may be able to work overtime. Airports are short women period, TSA is mostly male dominated. More females are needed for the gender to gender pat-downs etc. That's why its easier for women. Hope I answer your questions. |

Congratulations on passing that tough TSA test. There is no way on studying for that test, so taking your time and really concentrating on it helps a little bit. Once you pass it, you pretty much get results immediately on your email address you gave them in the beginning. If you pass the test and accept the contingency offer, you then go through a background check. Once that's complete, you pretty much go in a ready pool until a position becomes available which they have 2 years to contact you for that to happen. You hate to give them that much control, but you have no control when a position might become available. Once again, if you're a female, your chances are stronger. Good luck! Passing the test was the hardest part! |

You call the HR people and they say the airport has to contact you. Ive applied for over 10 different places and they are telling me that no one has quit, got fired, or they just need a very qualified person for the job? thats BS. You have to know someone or somthing. I have 20 years military experience which 14 was security related. I am not in need of a high paying job but i want to stay in the security field. I want to do this job really bad I am way over qualified, but I am willing to take less to help out. I dont know what they want in an employee. But obviously by watching the news and seeing all the lawsuits against them they arent hiring the right people. Well to all good luck in your ventures through this chaos and hopefully you will get a call as i hope I do also. |

I began my applying process in the last part of 2010- passed the test, passed the credit check and submitted the SF86. I have applied at many different airports out west. I am a physically fit female, kids grown, owe no money to the government and have good credit standing. I let my candidate dashboard sit while I pursued other things and now want to begin applying at different airports again. (which I did recently and my application is being reviewed) I haven't updated it since the beginning of 2011. My question is this- how long is the test, the credit and the SF86 good for?? Does anyone know?? I am sure that I will have to update the SF86 at some point- but will this prevent an airport from calling me for an airport assessment?? I really want to get a job out west and have just applied (thru USAJOBS) and see that my application is being 'reviewed'. |
