What are the average starting salaries, bonuses, benefits and travel requirements like at U-Haul?

What do you like best about working at U-Haul? Are there any great perks or special treats for employees?

They start you out at $7 an hour and you make bonuses on what to rent out for them. I didn't take this job because of the pay.

Uhaul is the worst retailer I have ever worked for the management is bad, the pay sucks, and the people working for the company are the lowest in life people I think they look for low-lifes because they liked to push people around The center I am at had nine managers here very bad when you get fired for anything, DO NOT WORK HERE also the trucks are not safe for people too...........

As far as a manager goes,( store manager, not assist. manager),it really depends on what state that the Uhaul is in...the starting salary is alot higher in say San Fransico or New York,(because of the cost of living), as oppsosed to say Phoenix AZ. In Arizona, the starting salary is around $ 34,000. to $ 36,000. a year. You work an average of 55 to 60 hours a week, six days a week ,( but remember....if one month, you don't make your profit /transaction goals, (which does happen), the following month/months will show a decrease in your available employee hours...which means you will have to cut your customer service reps hours, and work them yourself. My final months as a manager at Uhaul, I was working 70 hour weeks,(and you don't get paid overtime because you are on salary)....(continued)

...(continued from above)...and...if on Sunday, (your only day off)..one of your employees that run the store in your absence, calls in sick or quits, and you can't get a hold of a replacement....you'll be hitting the 75-80 work week easy.
As far as bonuses go...you have the oportunity to make a bonus every month...realistically,anywhere from $ 25. to $ 1000. dollars, (it depends on several factors...especially the size of your store, the larger the store, the larger the bonus opportunity. The thing they don't tell you at your managers interview,(about bonuses), is that there are a couple of "stipulations".....say you make an $ 800. hundred dollar bonus for the month of April, but you went over in payroll, (because your store was really busy that month and you needed the extra people)....you lose that bonus....you could have worked your butt off for 70 hours for that bonus...but the way Uhaul looks at it...better luck next time! Also, the bonuses are heavily taxed, so say you make a $ 500. bonus, you're lucky if you see $ 225.....(continued)....

Thank you for your timely response to the question regarding pay and benefits. I had recently applied for a manager positon but am seriously recapituating my decision based on your experience. It doesn't seem worth the effort. Thank you for taking the time to offer your supported opinion.

And if your lucky enough to get a bonus they hit your budget the month for what ever your bonus was so you pay your self to work harder and more hours and if some how u make to the next year you have to beat last year number as part of your bonus so here you go again working more hours because you have less money to spend on payroll they do know how to work this SCAMMM real well STAY AWAY FROM U-HAUL AT ALL COST.

Well I was a canter manager and had to fire just about my whole crew when I started. AS any manager you are only as good as your team. I have worked for many companies in my life. I know people that love U-Haul and have been there 20+ years. It depends on the market your in. It is a strong solid company with good benifits and stock options. At least you know each weel the pay check will be there and if you do a decent job and show your trying you could retire there. There is room for advancement as well. You can transfer to anywhere in the country if you move. I worked my way up to be an area Field Manager and thought I could do better and all. I left after 7 years with the compnay. Yes there are times when as a manager you have to work 60+ hours a week. Any retail manager at any company will tell you the same. If your man is out sick thats no fault of the man or the company but as a manager you are expected to open the store. You also get to go home early and come in late if there is nothing going on and you have a good team you hired and trained. As far as bonuses go they are no different than anyone else. Jump through this hoop, spin 3 times and throw a dart. Maybe you will get a bonus. A good manager also knows how to work that system and gets his bonus. I have received bonuses from every position I have held at uhaul. Just a few weeks ago i found out that a person who started washing trucks at a center 12 years ago is now what is called MCP. So anything is possible. I am attempting to go back because as I found that the grass is only greener for a few years then the company folded. U-Haul i never had to go to bed wondering if my paychech was going to bounce.

You do have a point you don't have to wonder if your paycheck will bounce because it will not you just have to wonder if you will have a job tomorrow benifits thats a joke they make you whate 6mo. before you can recive them i guess they figure you would have quit or been fired before then when i went to work for uhual it was'it for the money they paid I had already started and bulit my own business for the last 20 years then sold it and retired started to travel around world with my wife and just do think we never had time to do just enjoy life then i got bored i was only in my mid 40 in need of something to do didn't want to start another company so here i go to work for uhaul not knowing much about them i get hired as a general manager and take over the biggest center in are area you need at lest 12 empolyee min. to run this center first day my MCP come in and hands me a folder and said fire these ones and write up the rest have it back to me by tomorrow your the field manager will be here for the next two weeks to help you out so he left the F/M stayed about two hours and then left and didn't come back till next week so here i go with a staff at 1/3 of what it should be but i did make it thru center made a profit in first month something that center had not been able to do in a long time you made a good point your only as good as your staff i do belive that very much when i did finaly get a great staff on board the center took off making some great number and are MCP had hired a good staff of manager to work for him are area was put up good number betting all other area around us so what went wrong no madder how good your number were corp. office would still try find something wrong and put you down bonuses i made them you just need to figure out how to work the number in your favor in my company it was very simply i would tell my div. manager here are the number your div. need to make for a bonus.

Well buddy...you are the exception..not the rule. Look around you...GM's and CSR's canned at the drop of a hat. I could have been an AFM too...if I wanted to kiss the MCP's rear-end. Forget U-Haul. I learned my lesson all toO well and I WILL tell EVERYONE I KNOW TO NEVER RENT FROM U-HAUL OR TO WORK FOR U-HAUL. You must be a BIG WHEEL in your MCO. When the ax-man (aka-MCP) comes for you...hope unemployment helps out!

If you been there...you know who they are...the few that try to overly demonstrate both cruelty and undue pressure to both GM's and crew members just to get on the boss's good side...at any level of the organization.

I enjoyed your response about your experience as an employee of U-Haul and wanted to say a word about it. I too work for U-Haul and having read all of these posts, I must say that I agreed with you on many points but thought a couple of others needed to be made, not only for those on here but maybe for someone still with U-Haul. No, the grass is not greener and yes U-Haul does have problems but as with other companies it is usually a problem with a person or group of people and not a problem with the whole company. I read all the hate blogs about U-Haul and many of them can be attributed to folks who try to equate a constantly moving product with other products that are stationary or sit on a shelf and this is their major misunderstanding. Another major fault that U-Haul has is the massive authority of the MCP and the lack of oversight for that position. If a certain MCP makes lots of money for the company and keeps certain numbers up then there is no oversight because the ADVP is going to spend time where the problems are more noticable. According to policy the MCP should spend no more than 6 hours a week at his/her office and the rest of the time out in centers or with AFM's. The MCP can breed an attitude of teamwork and pride in what his/her company does and can make sure everyone from senior management of the company to the most rural dealer knows that this is a priority, or he/she can foster an attitude that causes moral to be low and makes the dealers feel unwanted. I know of instances of nepotism, mis-management of dealers and the equipment they struggle to rent, and firings of great employee's from some of these second type of MCP but I also know of really great MCP's who are a credit to the corporation. U-Haul is a great company to work for but as with any other company if you work under a person that is determined to consider only themselves and considers anyone else expendable(and has the power to fire), then things are harder.
