The college money isn't available at all locations. At least it wasn't available at Springfield when I was there. It's a good idea to ask some quetions before you sign on. |

You are required to have a trimmed mustache if you are a full or part time driver but no beards.. |

man in nj in Watchung, New Jersey 18 months ago |
hey guys what does a package handler basically do? recently graduated from hs and i was thinking about applying for the job. i dont care about physically demanding work. i heard that you either sort packages or you load them onto trucks...is this true? do you request which of these positions you want as a package handler? because id rather physically load trucks than just sort packages based on zip codes all day. oh and can anyone confirm about being able to have a beard as a part time package handler? and is there any uniform required or can you wear any random clothes? |

The best time to get in at UPS is during the holiday season (early November). If you can make it through the season, chances are good that they will offer you a regular part-time gig. However, it is HARD, PHYSICAL work! Our start time varied from 12:05 a.m. (e.g. midnight)to around 3:15 a.m. with about a six-eight hour shift during the season. It now is around 4:00 a.m. with just under five hours per shift. I took the job becuase I simply could not find work...went from a $87,000/yr job to 10.00/hr at UPS and now avg between 23-25 hrs a week. I've been with them 7 months and I've seen a lot of people come and go. It is a sweat shop! I've worked as much as 10 hours during the holiday season with ONE 10 minute break...no 30 minutes for lunch or anything. When it is time for break, the manager notifies the Union Steward and they count exactly 10 minutes using a stopwatch...and you better be in position working when break is over. My point is that it is HARD work...and don't expect to be buddies with the boss...they have a job to do...and you do to...if you are easily offended, frustrated with ever-changing priorities or demands, or aren't flexible enough to go with the flow...apply elsewhere. However, it's very easy to make yourself stand out...always show up on time, have your trucks ready to load (left over boxes from the day before placed back into the proper position), and not mouth off to the boss...fairly simple but alot of people can't deal with it. My approach to this work is remembering "they are only boxes"...

I wouldn't take a job like this ever again. I worked during the summer, and boy, it was hot in the trailers. Come home every night all sored and tired. Feel bad for the supervisors who have to also help out while dressed in their church clothes too. |

Hello, I am in the same boat as you...a graduate degree and not able to find work. I have been looking for a job for about a year now. I am interviewing at UPS this week and hope all goes well. I wish the pay was higher for the physical aspects of the job, but the benefits sound great. Can you tell me how things are going? Have there been any opportunities for promotion? Thanks. If you do work through the season, try to stand out as much as possible so you can get a call back for a permenant position. If you aren't a good worker, they won't be calling you back. I was lucky enough to get in before the season started, but most if it had to do with the fact that I was a re-hire as well. All in all, UPS always needs workers, regardless of what time of year it is. Most new-hires often call it quits right after walking through the door. The work can get very hectic, especially during the summer when it's like 90 degrees outside and 120 degrees in your trailer. Some guys have actually passed out because of heat exhausion. It rarely happens but it does from time to time (At least in Georgia). The work can get tedious because of the repetitiveness and the pay is sub-par. I was once told if you're looking for money then this isn't the place for you. I recommend this job for College students and maybe high school students, if you don't have AP classes, and people who just need a little extra change, but as a career choice, don't even bother filling out an application. Also, there is tuition assistance, but what they truly do is reimburse you for what you have already paid for. Well, you might be thinking, I'll just use what they reimburse me for to pay for school. Yeah, that maybe true, but it takes them 4-6 weeks AFTER you send in your grades from the previous semester you've taken to cut you a check. If your next semester starts a couple of weeks before the last term ends, the chances of you getting the money in time to pay for the next term are exponetially slim. Just be ready to pay (through financial aid, or any other way you can think of) each semester, don't depend on this program. Also this only works through loans and out-of-pocket payments, they don't reimburse you if it comes from federal grants or scholarship funds. Sometimes UPS is OK, other times you'll be wondering "Why did I even take this job?". |

How safe is the environmet at UPS? Is there any problems (particularly on the midnight and/or pre-load shift) with serious crimes such as rape, murder, etc.? Also, does anyone know if they pay for prior school loans? I have a ton of school loan debt about a year old. Moreover, does anyone know how often supervisor, administrative, and/or management jobs are available? Thank you! |

I'm 17, petite girl and am going on a tour tomorrow night.
I enjoy hard labor oriented jobs, although I'm thinking they will take one good look and perhaps a silent laugh and tell me to be on my way. also, I have noticable tattoos and a shaved head-

carlos in Wichita, Kansas said: no not true only management can not have facial hair. or package car drivers. if you work in the buillding you can wear a beard. By the way, facial hair is referred to as beard only. You may wear a mustache but no long hair. Again this is in referrence to management and UPS drivers only. |

Is a hoop earing on a guy ok, cuz it hurts to much to take it out, and i have my interview on friday? is that fine? |
|

as long as it isn't so big that it is distracting to the interviewer. Also depending on the size, they may ask you to remove it if you're hired becasue it may be a safety issue.
good luck |

Kelly in Atlanta, Georgia said: Are there many woman that work as package handlers? I have an interview on the 17th and reading all this is making me a little nervous that I might not be able to handle it! there are a lot of woman working for UPS. the question you have to ask yourself: Do I mind getting dirty and sweaty? Do I like or mind hard work? Am I worried if I break a finger nail. If you say no to the above question this job is not for you. Also they say or may ask you if you think you can lift 70lbs. If you want to work at ups, say yes. Don't worry, if you have to lift that amount, ask for help from your co-worker. I do it all the time and I am a male, working there for 30 years. Also, if and when you get the job, most hubs have a section called Small Sort. Once you get the job wait a few months and sign a bid list to get that particular job. Small sort t is where you handle small pacages and put them in plastic bags and then placing them on the conveyor belt.---Good luck |
