Question about interview... I recently apply online for a package handler position around where I live but online It schedule me at another warehouse that is 40min away for the warehouse I apply for. Is this how they setup for interview? because right after the day I apply online I got a phone call from them asking me if I completed my application online. I told the lady that I was applying by where I live but online they schedule me at another warehouse, she told me thats where they do the interview is this true? I just want to make sure because I dont want to drive 40min to the warehouse and thinking that its the wrong spot for my interview. If this were the spot for my interview would they also setup another interview at the warehouse I apply for? How come I cant just get interview at the warehouse I apply for instead at another warehouse? any input would be appreciated
-thanks

Art--in most cities there are UPS hubs and there are UPS centers or satelites. They dont run as many packages as the hubs because it is a smaller building. The hub is the main building which is also where HR is. Where you are being interviewed is most probably a hub. During your interview tell them that you would prefer to work closer to where you live.
Hope that helps

They will ask you if you are available from 1:00 pm to 5 or 6 pm. During the Xmas rush you might be out later. Be ready to work hard. You're driver will be giving you packages to deliver to a house while he delivers a package at the same time at another house. Hense driver helper. You will be doing a lot of running or walking fast.
You will be fitted for a uniform. You will meet your driver at a designated place that your driver instructs you to be at. Make sure you are there in plenty of time. He is on a time schedule and he cant afford to be waiting for you to show up.--Hope that helps.

when do you meet your driver/know who your driver is?...dont u just ring the doorbell and drop the package off at the house? say he drops me off and then goes to another house, it seems like i'd be waiting for him to come back and pick me up

You will find all that out during your orientation and training. You will wear a brown UPS uniform. If it is a residental route, you will be delivering a package to one house and he will be delivering one across the street. Most residential routes are called Driver Release which means that you simply drop off the package and leave. If you are delivering a package the driver will also be setting up the next stop(s).
Don't worry, your driver will not leave you and you shouldnt have to chase him down.

Don't worry. The shorts aren't that short. You will be called for orientation probably after Thanksgiving. One other thing, after the Xmas rush, you will be laid off. If you want a job with UPS, you may have to apply again but you will be working inside.

You might get called earlier, but I doubt it. If they do call you, it might be to let you get used to what you will be doing so when you start working during Xmas rush you wont be overwhelmed. Like I said, when you find out the place where you are suppose to meet your driver, make sure there in plenty of time.
As far as stores, if you are in a mall, again he will give you a couple of packages, you deliver them and then meet up with him to get more packages.

When you have your interview that is one of ask the question(s) you need to ask the interviewer. I cant tell you exactly or even a approximate time when you will. Only your interviewer could tell you that. Don't be afraid to ask questions. That is what the interviewer is there for.---Good Luck
BTW if you do get the job write back to this blog to let anyone who is interested in being a driver helper, and let them know what you went through.

Question for 30 year upser. I was scheduled for a tour/interview for Wednesday but I'm not sure if I was told 6AM or 6PM. 6PM seems more reasonable but then again I'm not exactly positive just to be sure is there a way i can contact the HR or unless you can confirm that 6AM is not really the time they do tours.

I went to the tour and noticed some people were given a second interview the next day but after I was done with the interview I was just told that they'll call me. So what does that mean? Am I most likely on the waiting list, because I'm thinking the second interview means you're pretty much in and after I was interviewed I wasn't given a 2nd one.

Same thing happen to me.. the HR told me that I met all the qualification for the package handler job(preload) and ask when can I start I said anytime she just told me she just need to do a background check that take about couple of days or a week and they'll call me. I didnt received another interview either which I think I blew it big time because right when I sat down with the HR for a 1 on 1 my mind went blank and the things that I thought I was going to say didnt came up because I was nervous lol. Mordecal did you apply online or at UPS where you wanted a job at? If you apply online did you received additional information that need to be filled out? direct deposit, form W-4 etc... and did they say anything about doing a background check? I'm still wondering if I get the job or not since they gave me the "we'll call you" line.

My experience at UPS tour/interview:

Got there around 5:10am(my interview was at 5:30am) only about 5 person show up and only two person dress to impress including myself lol I guess we feel left out because we dress up) The other just wore sneakers
and sweater).
-Sign my name on a sign up sheet. Took two sheet of paper( Heath Plan and Essential job function) sat down read and wait on the HR.
-HR come in and gave a brief speech about the Health Plan, Employee discount, School stuff etc..
-Took us on a tour (HR kept on bringing up that its a hard job, just to make you think twice about the job and going on with the interview)
-Finished tour (saw bunch of people outside waiting who came in late. HR person told them sorry to them they missed the tour they need to reschedule. Even have a guy
who drove 1-2hr to get there sent home.
-So if you apply online make sure you print out the direction and go early or give yourself enough time to get there and don't be late! for the tour.
-After HR got rid of them did a little speech about its hard work and If you don't think you can handle this kind of job you can get up and leave.
-Its about 6:20am-6:30am she start interviewing people sat down and wait for my turn.(7:45am) went and sat down 1 on 1 for the interview (which I think didn't went well)
-HR ask
.Why you want to work for UPS .Why should we hire you .About your recent jobs .Can you lift/carry something that weigh 70lb
. basic stuff like other job recruiter ask. .What was the last physical thing you did that involved lifting etc..
.Package Handler position would you give a 1 year commitment .Ask if you're fine joining teamster .Ask you to give them permission for background check

I left around 8:15am or so, well that is my first experience at UPS tour/interview hope it help for the first timer going to there interview

I just wish I could do the interview again because I froze lol not sure if the people that got interview had a 2nd interview but I didn't I guess(read my above post)
I did bad on my interview but I'm hoping to get a call from them in a couple of days or wait for a week if they don't call I'll just call the HR and ask whats my status. If you're determined like me on getting this job make sure you ask the HR person for there phone number/email or there business card just incase they don't call you and you can follow up on your status that's what I did I ask for there business card. I dont think you can get the HR number on there site it only show the 1800 number so good luck to people that goes on the interview for the first time.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell because they do interviewers it seems like 24 hours a day. I would definitely call HR to get the exact time a m or p m.

I am 17 years old and very confused with how old you have to be to work at UPS, the web site it says 17 years old for a package handler and 18 for a driver helper, and I went on the tour and when I got the 1 on 1 with the HR they told me that I was not old enough to work as a package handler, but they said I could be a driver helper? What is up with the age thing?

I am not sure what is going on Greg. You obviously are being given the wrong info unless either you are the interviewer are misunderstanding what is being asked. I would go directly to the place where you were interviewed (assuming they have an HR) try to get a hold of the person who interviewed you and tell them you saw in the website that you have to be 17 years old to be a package handler and yet you were told that you weren't old enough. Good luck

Not necessarily. I am getting info from a lot of people asking the same question, "Why didn't I get a second interview?" Unfortunatley I have no answer for you because obviously I wasn't there. Let me just say that when you go to an interview get as much as info as you can from the interviewer such as:
1-How old do i have to be to be a package handler/driver helper?
2-What does a package handler do/what does a driver helper do?
At the end of the interview, ask this question:
"What do I have to do to get this job?"

A background check used to be that a person would go to their local police station and have the background (criminal) check done to see if you have a ciminal record. It cost a couple of buck and you get the report right away. You then simply give that report to the HR person. Now, UPS may do a background check based on your work history to see what kind of worker you were. That may take anwhere from 1 day to a week, based on all the apps that they have to process.

30 year upser - i read somewhere that UPS rarely gives out 8 hr. shifts, and it's mostly 4hr. shifts, what are the hours of a Driver Helper?

Was this comment helpful? Yes / No Reply Report abuse

30 year upser

With the exception of full time employees, yes it is rare to get 8 hours shifts. The only way you could come close to it is being a driver helper, especially during the two weeks before Xmas. You may very well be out there 6-8 hours delivering packages because the driver has so many stops during the Xmas season. If any one works inside, if you are hired as a seasonal help, you may get four or more hours but you wont be working eight hours.
During the Xmas season-called peak- there will be a lot of part timers working double shifts. However, since UPS is a union shop all overtime will be based on seniority and you wont qualify.--hope that helps

Bring an ID is a good idea. As I mentioned earlier, dont be afraid to ask questions.

1) What is the pay
2) How long will I be out per day?
3) Do I meet the driver at the building or
at a selected spot?
4) Uniforms?
5) Training?
6) If you are interested in getting called
back after Christmas, ask them What do I
have to do and what are my chances of
getting called back to work inside?

If you ask the above questions and some of your own, it will show that you were prepared and interested in the job. Good Luck

Re: How many driver helpers, I don't know exactly. It has to do with how many residential routes center or hub has. It could be any where 5 to 20. There is no set pattern as far as I know regarding where you are placed. I guess you could request a route that is close to your home but I wouldn't count on it.

I have been working at UPS for 30 years. I don't understand what the big deal is with not hiring 17 year olds but they will hire 17-year olds to be driver helpers which I think is a more physicaly demanding job than being a package handler.
During the interview that is one of the questions I would ask the interviewer: Why is there an age minimum of 18 to be a package handler.
The only think I can think of is it may be a law in some states.
Other questions you could ask is (assuming you get the package handler job)
--Will I be a seasonal helper or a permanent employer.
--Will and when will I get benefits
--What will my pay be?

You mentioned that you didn't want to be a driver helper. Ask the same questions as above. If you were a driver helper and ssuming you still want to be a package handler this will be good experience.

BTW-- As far as I filling out medical papers, I have never heard of that, so I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.

I'm surprised to hear being a Driver Helper is more physically demanding than a Package Handler, what makes it more physically demanding to you? is it the constant running around from house to house & store to store?

not only that but just jumping in and out of that brown truck takes its toll on your legs. Believe me the first couple of days you will be dog tired from all the running.
Loading and loading is hard job too but it's due to lifting of boxes, especially when unloading from underneath the flaps of the truck where the packages are.
