Thanks |

I have three questions: part time you wont get more than 20h/week. By contract we are guaranteed 17.5h, which is 3.5h/day. However, in reality, your shift is over when the work is done, whether its after 3h or 2h55min. during peak season you might get 25h, but no one I know works 20h/week. You can sign up for extra work, but its based on seniority. I see lots of people w/ headphones. |

30 year upser, i went in for an interview 3 days ago for an opening for a package handler position and felt the interview went relatively well. The HR rep told me that they were hiring about 6-8 people for the 4-9am shift and all seemed to go well. At the end of the interview the rep mentioned to me that they were possibly doing the tour next thursday but wasn't positive with the holiday (labor day) week coming up and all, but that she would give me a call soon and let me know. From your experience, when can i expect to receive a call if receive one at all, and should i call them up early next week to do a follow up on the interview and see if i'm still being considered? Thank you |

It will show that you are eager. I did that, and sure enough they called me. Can't gurantee that will happen to you, but it sure wouldn't hurt. |

Thanks 30 year upser. Well i was pretty persistant. I called them a few times but they never answer their phone at HR so i decided to send a kind e-mail to the HR rep thanking her for the interview and telling her that i am still very interested in the job and willing to work hard if given the opportunity. She e-mailed me back today and told me that they are having a tour tomorrow morning at 6 am and to meet at the breakroom at the bottom floor, so looks like i've moved a step forward. Should i just wear casual close to the tour? And now that i had the interview and am getting the tour, does that give me a great chance of getting me the job, or is there still a second interview? Not too sure how this works. |

I am assuming after the tour she will again talk to you to see if this is really what you want to do. She will ask if you can lift 70 lbs. (say yes) and if you have reliable transportation. She may ask what shift you want to work etc

My UPS experience so far in trying to get a part-time package handler position: First i applied online on the UPS website and i chose an interview time to meet with them the following week. I arrived to that interview about ten minutes early where there were approximately 8 other individuals there also going for the package handler position. The interview went fairly well, i answered the questions that were asked to the best of my ability, and she told me that she would call me back within a week or two to invite me to the tour. About a week later i still hadn't received a call, so i made a follow up call to UPS telling them that i was still interested in the position and looked forward to hearing from them. I got their answering machine though so I decided to also send a thank you e-mail to the HR rep i interviewed with thanking them for the opportunity. I got an e-mail back about two days later telling me that there would be a tour the following day and asked if i would like to come. The tour, which was yesterday was very informative and went very well. After the tour was over, a different HR rep spoke with everyone individually one by one, kinda like a second interview. I felt that this 2nd interview/mini interview went even better than the first, and at the end of the interview, she told me that i was going to do very well and told me to come in early Thursday morning at 4:00 am, which is tomorrow morning. And now here I am. I got a phone call from the HR rep i had the first interview with today reminding me to come in tomorrow at 4 for my 2nd interview and to come dressed as if im ready to work. I'm guessing this is where i get to interview with a higher up Manager/Sup. Any advide or tips for me would be great. I felt like I already had the job after the tour interview/mini interview, would be ashame not to get it now. Also i'm wondering for 30 year UPSER or anyone else on here. Did you get the job at the 2nd interview, or did they call u after? |

First off, i want to thank you 30 year upser for being so active in these forums and really providing helpful tips and advice for anyone posting here interesting in a job/career with ups. Today i had my interview with one of the higher up managers for the part-time package handler job (My 3rd and final interview), and even though i froze up a little at the start of the interview, i settled down and in the end she said i had the job (provided i pass the background check)and told me to call HR later today to schedule a date to fill out all my paperwork. There were only four of us there for the final interview, and 3 of the 4 got the job. I know this because i was last to be interviewed, and i asked everyone as they walked out how it went. :) All that is left for me to do now is to get in touch with HR to schedule the date to fill the paperwork, which is easier than it sounds because they never seem to answer their phones. Would it be professional for me to show up to the HR office later today in person to make things easier? Thx again 30 upser and anyone else who helped with your very useful information. This is an extremely helpful forum. |

If you actually made your 30 days, then you're in. They cant fire you without union representation. However, I wouldn't make this a habit--taking off. Try to make every effort to show up and on time. |

So I have my second interview today with a local UPS plant. I got an email to make sure I have all my paperwork filled out, which includes W-4, I-9, and direct deposit, plus other policy stuff. Is there basically anyway I can screw this up.... I mean, why ask for all this stuff if they are not gonna hire me...? |

30 year UPSer, I had the tour and ONE interview on Sep. 1, 2009, and was told to go home and fill out my tax forms, etc. Haven't heard anything since. Any ideas? I cannot find a local number for them anywhere online or in a phone book. Just 800-Pick-UPS |

I'm going in to HR tomorrow to fill our my remaining paperwork then most likely i will be starting the package handler job next monday. I admit i'm a little nervous as i have no idea what to expect on my first couple of days. I'm more worried about messing something up then my actual physical endurance. Can you guys share your first few days as a package hander at ups? How did it go? |

Grats rolsen, i start next Tuesday for an orientation period. $28.50 a DAY! Blah lol... My starting rate as a part-time package handler is $8.50 per hour. With Union fees and the government stealing about half my paycheck, i will be lucky if im bringing in $100 a week. |

I went to my second interview, but no one was there to interview me. The HR Rep for the hiring center scheduled my interview for Thursday, but when I went to the interview, there was an employee saying the Local HR rep only comes on Wednesday. So I called the guy that set my interview up and he said he will give the other HR rep a call and call me back in 20 minutes (This was at 1:00pm on friday) and I have not received a call. Gonna wait till Wednesday to call the guy thats supposed to interview me the 2nd time, if the other guy does not call me back.... so weird.... |

Sounds like there was a mixup somewhere, most likely on HR's part. I find HR to be pretty incompetant in so many companies. My suggestion to you if you were suppose to have the interview already this past Wednesday, don't wait till next Wednesday to call. Give them a call Monday and if no one answers go there in person and explain your situation. I just got a job as a package handler and there were many times throughout the process that i had to be persistant in checking in/staying in contact with them because they won't do it. |

So today was my first day and i must say i was pretty overwhelmed. Got at work around 4:30 am as instructed for about an hour or so of orientation/watching some safety videos/small easy quiz, e.t.c... After the long safety lecture, one of the main managers there split the new hires onto different conveyer areas so we could start learning how to load up the trucks. There were only 3 new hires, so they split us into different belts and assigned a helper to each one of us. The person that was assigned to teach me/show me the ropes wasn't too helpful. Explained very little, but i got enough out of it to understand the basics. So i helped him load a few packages onto the three trucks he was assigned to as i was slowly learning what to do. About an hour in i began understanding more of the numbering system on the packages and how to know where certain packages belonged on the trucks. The guy that was assigned to help me was then moved somewhere to do something else while i took over his 3 trucks. I must say that i felt pretty overwhelmed. I could barely get 1 truck done and i felt like i was working at a snails pace. A supervisor did help me for a little while with my trucks, but then left. How long does it usually take new hires to really start learning the routine cuz i felt extremely slow today lol. |

I had a interview about a week ago, and interesting enough all they did was go over my application and what I would be doing on the job. The only questions was, would I be able to do the work, and what hours I would like. Then my only question was about how long the application process would take, which was replied in about 2 weeks. This is in Louisville so, there is a big airport here. The next day they changed my online application from package handler, to air handler. What exactly do they do? How much benefit/negative is that over the regular job? I also did not ask for my interviewer business card, so if they do not call, how should I go about the process of contacting them to see where I stand? |

Hello, Thank you so much to the 30 year UPS veteran on this forum. Just by scrolling through the past few years (!) of messages, I have learned a lot. I applied online. I got a call two days later. They want me to tour the facility in a few days. It is my understanding that this will be the first step in at least a 2-3 step process, is that correct? Does UPS have any problems with visible tattoos *ON SHIFT* (from shoulder to about 4-5 inches ABOVE the elbow, as in, towards the shoulder)? Obviously, I don't want to be answering interview questions about what my tattoos mean, but as far as WORKING there goes, is this a problem? Thanks in advance for any replies. |

They specialize in work shoes. I am not sure what shoe the interviewer was showing you. I would wear something, first that is comfortable because you will be standing for four or more hours. Also get something that has thick threads on the sole so you dont slip or fall. If you can afford it, I would also get steel-toed shoes, though it is not necessary. I wear them so if you accidently drop a heavy package, your foot will be protected. |

i have an interview tomorrow morning for a ptph position. at this point i realize it is a seasonal/temporary job, but i would be ecstatic if there was a possibility of it becoming a permanent position. honestly, what are the chances of this happening? i have 3 1/2 years and 4 peak seasons worth of industry experience with a former competitor of ups. i feel fairly confident about getting the seasonal job, but what should i do to increase my chances of getting called back? i'm looking for a career in the industry and i would love for it to be with ups. i don't necessarily think i'm aiming for the coveted driver position, but i would be VERY happy getting back into hazardous materials or working as a employee trainer. i have experience in loading, unloading, hazmat, smalls sort, scanning, catwalks, forklift...you name it. |

30yearupser I have a question.. I have already attended two interviews and was called in today for a tour at 6 PM. I left at around 5.. and gravely underestimated L.A traffic and arrived 10 minutes late. Unfortunately, I was told to call the hr tomorrow in the morning. Right now I am frustrated because I really wanted to have this job and feel like I have already made a bad impression. I am going to call tomorrow and let them know that I have no excuse for my tardiness and see if I can reschedule another tour.. Do you think they will reschedule me? I am currently dealing with a dillema because I have another job offer at a local movie theather and have an interview for that in 3 days. I am desperately seeking work as I have been in debt for quite some time due to the economy and do not want to miss out on any opportunities but I feel like I already have with UPS.. Any suggestions? |

At the end of my interview she told me she was submitting my background check, which I’m assuming means that I’m in for the seasonal position. Now I just have to hope it works out to be a permanent position. |

30 year upser: i'm a 19 year old female that applied to at UPS to be a package handler. i have an interview/appointment next wednesday at 6pm. i have a couple questions. 1. when i scheduled my interview it said that steel-toe work boots must b worn to enter. i don't own any because this would be my first job, and i don't want to buy them just in case i don't get the job because it would be a waste of my money. i do, however, have leather sneakers. would that be okay or should i just go ahead and buy the boots? 2. i'm not exactly a "strong" girl. i read that you said to tell the interviewer "Yes" to the question can you lift 70lbs. but you also said "be honest". i don't know if i can lift that much. so do i tell the interviewers yes, or tell them i don't know? 3. when i applied, i thought i was applying for seasonal part-time, but now it says just part-time. should i still expect it to be seasonal or regular part-time? |

this is exactly what it said about the boots: WHAT TO EXPECT / WHAT TO BRING Report to the security gate and wait for a UPS HR Representative meet you. Remember to wear casual slacks or jeans and a sturdy closed-toe work boot in order to enter the facility. Please do not bring any personal items such as cell phones, pagers, purses, or book bags. Also do not wear any jewelry articles such as rings, watches, necklaces or earrings. Plan on your information session and tour to last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. -does information session mean an interview? |

TheCurious1 in Lawrenceville, Georgia said: 30 year upser: 1) Okay, I find it hard to believe they want you to wear steel-toed shoes on just an interview. I had never heard of that, to be honest. I would wear normal work shoes. If they ask why you didn't wear the steel-toed shoes, simply tell them, you will buy them if you are hired. You're right. Why waste money on the shoes if you dont get the job. 2) As far as lifting 70 lbs, tell them "I will do my best, but I will not be afraid to ask for help." 3) If they told you you will be regular and not seasonal help, consider yourself lucky because after the Christmas rush, you will probably be layed off for a spell, however you will be called first before seasonal helpers. An informational session is letting you know what to expect if you were to be hired at UPS. I think the reason why they want sturdy work boots, not necessarily steel-toed shoes, is that they may have load or unload a truck for a few minutes to let you know what it feels like to this job. |

Hello 30 year upser. I've been reading these blogs, and they have all been very helpful. So I went for my interview with ups Yesterday. I went there for the seasonal ptph postion. She explained the position, made it VERY clear that this job was pure labor and basically got two people to walk out. I stayed even though I really was about to leave myself, when i found out, they don't keep the seasonal help. I was the last to be interviewed and explained that I would have love to take the position if it was permanent and not on call. She then sat down with me and asked me if I would like the "Prealoud" postion she had at the sunrise hours. It's a permanent position mon-fri. She was VERY nice and was very pleased that I was a female applying for a job there. I was very militant and explained that I would not let her down. She then in fact, walked me around to show me the ropes, for about 10 minutes. We went back into her office and she was telling me how she wanted females to apply and to move up. I said i would love to if ever the chance opened up in the future. She put me in the computer as preloader and asked for my ID and photo copied it. As i was leaving I shook her hand and said "I hope I hear from you soon" she said "You will I'm giving you a call friday for your paper work" and then told me that orientation was held on Tuesdays.

I am not 30 year upser, but I did just go through the process and am beginning orientation next week. You are hired (assuming you pass the background check). You'll have to fill out Union paperwork,W-4, etc., but if you are scheduled for orientation, then you are definitely hired. |

She just let me know they are held on Tuesdays. My background check should be excellent. She said she was going to call me for my paper work either today or monday. Seems like I got it, considering the way she was speaking to me. We have also been emailing back and forth. She gave me all of her information. Email, number and so forth. Guess I'm just awaiting the call. Do you think it was good that she showed me around as well as the interview on the first day? she didn't show the others around that went in for the seasonal position. |
