What do you think -- is this company going to survive and thrive? Are they looking to expand their staff, or do you think layoffs are inevitable? How does United Rentals stack up against the competition? |

This is a horrible place to work. Managers who treat employees like garbage and I agree with the good ol boys club going on at UR. |

My personal opinion (and I saw and heard alot) is that United is floundering. They keep cutting jobs and centralizing departments to "streamline" but it is more than likely to cut back on expenses. |

If you don't bring income into a business in some way, then yes you will be the first to go when the market turns. One of the best things they are working on across the board is centralized dispatch. I don't know why they didn't go to it years ago. I would hardly call what United Rentals is doing "floundering". They are making the changes in order to keep up the profits and to continue a healthy growth. |

Did you discuss this with your manager or did you grumble in the corner or worse, behind the managers back. Maybe we are different in Texas, but it is not like what you are talking about. All large companies have some bad managers or employees who think that their manager is an idiot. If you work hard and worry about what you are responsible for you will get along. If you rock the boat or have a bad attitude you will not be liked much, especially by management. Why would they? Negative people are a drain on the whole team. |

If you look at the job openings you will see that there is lots of positions that are growing. Service and sales are the best jobs to be in for the long term. I would not take a job that doesn't directly bring money into the company. They had a big layoff earlier this year for the branch administrators, but if you look at what a lot of them were really doing, you would see that a lot of them were not productive employees. Some were great and it was not fair for them, but the managers now do some of that work and the rest is outsourced. That is a huge savings, which directly shows up on the bottom line. There was just to much fat and they are trimming those positions. Several mid level managers are gone along w/some of the higher level ones that they just did away with those positions. This is what great companies do, they adapt in order to be better. |

There are some great competitors in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The sales reps make the difference. Customers can get the equipment from so many different sources for about the same price and the service is pretty good at the big 3 or 4 companies in the area. The difference is the people. United is the largest rental company in the world and has more equipment available across the country than anyone. Some of the sales reps at other companies and I am sure at United too if you look around, bad mouth the competition. There really is no reason for that. United Rentals is the leader in this market. |

all of the admins in SE region are laid off as of May 2009. I've never seen it this bad before and I have seen this company go through many layoffs and also growth spurts |
