you don't want to be a driver, trust me unless you like to work long hours and love hard work then that is the job for you. but you will be a cover driver first and they get all the work and stay out till 9:00PM

you can have facial hair (beard/ goat-tee) if you are a part-time package handler. You are required to have a trimmed mustache if you are a full or part time driver but no beards..

The best time to get in at UPS is during the holiday season (early November). If you can make it through the season, chances are good that they will offer you a regular part-time gig. However, it is HARD, PHYSICAL work! Our start time varied from 12:05 a.m. (e.g. midnight)to around 3:15 a.m. with about a six-eight hour shift during the season. It now is around 4:00 a.m. with just under five hours per shift. I took the job becuase I simply could not find work...went from a $87,000/yr job to 10.00/hr at UPS and now avg between 23-25 hrs a week. I've been with them 7 months and I've seen a lot of people come and go. It is a sweat shop! I've worked as much as 10 hours during the holiday season with ONE 10 minute break...no 30 minutes for lunch or anything. When it is time for break, the manager notifies the Union Steward and they count exactly 10 minutes using a stopwatch...and you better be in position working when break is over. My point is that it is HARD work...and don't expect to be buddies with the boss...they have a job to do...and you do to...if you are easily offended, frustrated with ever-changing priorities or demands, or aren't flexible enough to go with the flow...apply elsewhere. However, it's very easy to make yourself stand out...always show up on time, have your trucks ready to load (left over boxes from the day before placed back into the proper position), and not mouth off to the boss...fairly simple but alot of people can't deal with it. My approach to this work is remembering "they are only boxes"...
and also remembering that a lot of people in my area are out of work. It really is no place for a person with a graduate degree, but it has given me a real appreciation for how hard people have to work to survive. By the way, if you can't lift 50 lbs...don't bother applying.

I wouldn't take a job like this ever again. I worked during the summer, and boy, it was hot in the trailers. Come home every night all sored and tired. Feel bad for the supervisors who have to also help out while dressed in their church clothes too.

If you do work through the season, try to stand out as much as possible so you can get a call back for a permenant position. If you aren't a good worker, they won't be calling you back. I was lucky enough to get in before the season started, but most if it had to do with the fact that I was a re-hire as well. All in all, UPS always needs workers, regardless of what time of year it is. Most new-hires often call it quits right after walking through the door. The work can get very hectic, especially during the summer when it's like 90 degrees outside and 120 degrees in your trailer. Some guys have actually passed out because of heat exhausion. It rarely happens but it does from time to time (At least in Georgia). The work can get tedious because of the repetitiveness and the pay is sub-par. I was once told if you're looking for money then this isn't the place for you. I recommend this job for College students and maybe high school students, if you don't have AP classes, and people who just need a little extra change, but as a career choice, don't even bother filling out an application.

Also, there is tuition assistance, but what they truly do is reimburse you for what you have already paid for. Well, you might be thinking, I'll just use what they reimburse me for to pay for school. Yeah, that maybe true, but it takes them 4-6 weeks AFTER you send in your grades from the previous semester you've taken to cut you a check. If your next semester starts a couple of weeks before the last term ends, the chances of you getting the money in time to pay for the next term are exponetially slim. Just be ready to pay (through financial aid, or any other way you can think of) each semester, don't depend on this program. Also this only works through loans and out-of-pocket payments, they don't reimburse you if it comes from federal grants or scholarship funds. Sometimes UPS is OK, other times you'll be wondering "Why did I even take this job?".

How safe is the environmet at UPS? Is there any problems (particularly on the midnight and/or pre-load shift) with serious crimes such as rape, murder, etc.? Also, does anyone know if they pay for prior school loans? I have a ton of school loan debt about a year old. Moreover, does anyone know how often supervisor, administrative, and/or management jobs are available? Thank you!

I'm 17, petite girl and am going on a tour tomorrow night.
Does the tour indicate further interveiws? (anyone?)..

I enjoy hard labor oriented jobs, although I'm thinking they will take one good look and perhaps a silent laugh and tell me to be on my way.

also, I have noticable tattoos and a shaved head-
does this create a problem? oh boy.

Let's put it this way: If you can walk 20 feet without tripping, you're hired. If you tell them you like hard labor and dont mind getting your hands dirty (and you will), you're hired.
By the way, in my building, when they give tours, what they are doing is not only showing new people around, but also they may let them load or unload for a brief period of time just to show them what they will be doing and to see if this is what they want to do. Dont be surprised if this happens to you---Good Luck

Find the phone number of the location you applied for and give them a call to ask about the status of your application.

as long as it isn't so big that it is distracting to the interviewer. Also depending on the size, they may ask you to remove it if you're hired becasue it may be a safety issue.
If you are applying for a driving positon, again, depending on the size, they may ask you to remove it for appearence sake.

good luck

Unless you are going to be a delivery driver, you do not have to undergo a drug test. If you are going to be package handler, i.e. loader, unloader or sorter, you do not have to take a drug test.

Hey Jason,
Most jobs are either in Hub which is a big building or a center, where it is a smaller building. You can not get a job at the UPS store and work at UPS. Besides, the UPS store are franshised and operated by family memebers.

there are a lot of woman working for UPS. the question you have to ask yourself: Do I mind getting dirty and sweaty? Do I like or mind hard work? Am I worried if I break a finger nail. If you say no to the above question this job is not for you. Also they say or may ask you if you think you can lift 70lbs. If you want to work at ups, say yes. Don't worry, if you have to lift that amount, ask for help from your co-worker. I do it all the time and I am a male, working there for 30 years. Also, if and when you get the job, most hubs have a section called Small Sort. Once you get the job wait a few months and sign a bid list to get that particular job. Small sort t is where you handle small pacages and put them in plastic bags and then placing them on the conveyor belt.---Good luck

Corey--as I have said several times, if you dont get a response, especially after a month, I would go to the UPS facility to their HR. I think that the fact you went to see them personally, will impress them and you just might get an interview on the spot.

Good Luck.

HEY, well I have been trying to get a job with UPS for about two years now.. Nobody ever called me or anything, until this week. I simply updated my application and as soon as I submitted it I recieved a phone call setting up an appointment to go in and take a look around. A lot of you speak of how HARD the package handling job is, well im a big strong guy and i need the work, and could use the excercise, so I am not at all worried about the physical labor. I have been moving kegs for the past four years so this shouldn't be too bad.. I am, on the other hand, a little nervous about a drug test.. I see that some of you say package handlers are NOT required to take a test, but some people are saying you ARE. If I could get an accurate response to this, I would be very grateful.

I would be surprised to the point of shocked if you had to take a drug test. As far as I know, only package car drivers have to take a drug test. This makes sense since they are going to be driving have ton trucks and UPS wants to make sure they are alert and not spaced out. Hope this helps. By the way it sounds like you will be perfect for the job.
Good Luck
