Wal-Mart is not a good place to work. I went through the training and went to work the next day. I had to get a member of management to clock me in because i was new. 4 different associates paged "we need a member of management to the time clock", I was late 1 hour in my department because of this. I was told i would not get paid for my "wait time". So i did not go back. I should have believed what i read on here about Wal-Mart before i went to work there. |

I have worked for walmart now for two and a half years, and i love it. I started as a sales associate in electronics than moved to the connection center about 8 months ago. i recently got promoted to a CSM(CSS). from what i have seen at my store everyone is given a fair opportunity to move up but what i see is lazy people that really don't care. looking at walmart as a job that an idiot can do. but if u actually apply yourself and show management that you are willing to apply yourself you can get farther in the company. |

I have worked for Wal-mart and my friends dad worked for Wal-Mart. Her story is worse than mine so I will start there. He has worked for them since a new store opening for about six years as a dpt manager. He is an older employee. Everything was fine up until recently. One day they came up to him and told him, either he has to step down from his position or he has to look forward to another job. The reason they gave him was because they were looking to restructure and hire all new dpt managers. Why did they want new dpt managers because the current ones were getting paid to much. So he said ok and took an overnight position in grocery stocking shelves. This was ok for a little while until one day corporate goes and says they expect each stoc person to cut open, place items on shelf and crush the boxes in less then a minute. What is sad is they would actually stand there with a stop watch and time them. Now he works in lawn in garden. He wants to leave but at his age its hard for him to find something else. |

Now for my story. I have worked for walmart a couple of years and it was far from a great working environment. I worked in One hour photo and was treated like crap. The assistant manager was only nice to her favorites. Promoted them to specialist when I did the same kind of work they did. Every day the assistant manager had an bad attitude. Alot of gossip between employees. When you would use open door policy about it, they would brush it off like it was a joke that you had a complaint. Wal-marts management are very heartless people only out to make more money for a company that is destroying our economy and shutting down local competitors. |

yea, i got "coached" in the middle of January because this somewhat young new Indian manager was left alone overnight, so he was pissed off and he wanted to make a statement or prove something, anyway he came outside while i was pushing carts in the slushy snow and stops me with a line of carts, tells me to leave them there and come inside to the back. This is when the fun started; he asked me if i liked my job to which i hesitantly replied "yea, i like paychecks" then he went on to tell me how i have one extra man outside to help me (i have nothing against the mentally handicapped) when i realized he was referring to a slightly retarded maintenance boy. He is very sweet and he does what he can, but he can not realistically perform the duties assigned to him, let alone in the snow! "the parking lot should not look like that! With Two Men out there!" he says in broken english... yes, only two of us, in the snow, after a busy day and the entire 3 acre+ lot... hmmmmmm definitely shouldnt look like that. He writes down in the coaching paperwork that i was "working too slowly" to which i chuckled and signed quickly and told him that he was causing me to be late clocking out with this shenanigans and that it may cost overtime. He let me go pretty quickly and followed me to the clock, when i informed him he cant talk to me when im off the clock. He was pissed and now seven months later i still have my job and he was transferred over to the late, late overnight management slot. It helps to have a few friends in management too :-) |

Can't you go to your state's Labor and Industries office and file some sort of a grievance? In our state, L&I would LOVE to hear about something like that. I'm really sorry that you feel you have to put up with that sort of abuse, but there has to be some sort of avenue within your state government that can help you. |

I interviewed for a cashier position at Walmart. First, there were several people being interviewed in one room, which I thought was not very professional. Second, the money isn't much more than what I am currently making. Third, I told them I would have to give my current job a two-weeks notice before I could start there, but they called me wanting me to start orientation right away. I really don't know if I should begin working there. It is not a necessity at this time. Plus they told me as a part-timer I could get 33 hours. Does anyone know how true this is? |

I worked at Walmart for a few days. I was treated like crap. I should have just listened to what everyone said on here. It wasn't for me. I applied for cashier and apparel associate. The job for apparel associate which I really would have rather had opened after I started as cashier but they said you have to stay in your current position for 6 months before you can transfer. Otherwise you have to quit and reapply. I decided it wasn't worth it. I'm sorry for the people that have to work there for awhile. |

I've been working for Wal-Mart for the past five and half months now. When I was hired I was told that I would have to be part time for the first like 90 days. As a part time cashier I did recieve up to 33 hours per week. I was told that as a part time cashier I could receive benefits, such as health insurance, after my first 90 days. After I hit my 90 day mark, I went to get insurance through HR and was denied. I was then told I would have to get insurance within the first 60 days or after 180 days. I was very upset.. I had been seeing a doctor for a health problem that I'm still experiencing. However, I did meet a nice lady in HR that convinced my manager to bump me up to fulltime which then made me eligible for benefits (my benefits will begin this month), but I already have a doctor bill thats well over $1200. Other issues I have had with Wal-mart were my absences. I was told that if I had a doctors note, my absence would not be counted against me. Well turns out that was a lie and I received lots of points on my record. I ended up taking a medical leave of absence that they "forgot" to log and those absences were counted as well (some were no call no shows and such). I was then warned if I was absent one more time that I would be written up and so on. I did end up getting my LOA put on my record and all those points taken off, but it has been very difficult. They now want to make me a CSM, but I am a little worried because they have cut all the CSM's hours and make them work part of the week as a cashier. I will refuse the position if they make me work as a cashier as well, because at walmart, if you work as a cashier more of your time during the week than a csm, then you get the pay of cashier.. All I recommend is that you keep track of your points, your absences, and your pay. |

wal mart has seriously opened my eyes to the way that people really are, and in all honesty has pretty much broken my spirit and all the respect for humanity in general. its really just made me really depressed.all i hear from the managers is gossip, talk badly about other cashiers, talk about the costumers (racial things also) the head zone manager who i hate and is new, has a problem with me for some reason, i dont know what his deal is,(hes the type to sit there and say demeaning things to your face, all while smiling) just points his little finger and tells the csms what to do, which means theyre gonna tell the cashiers to do it

I have been working at walmart for only 4 months and I hate it. They work you like a dog and don't pay you hardly anything. I have to stick in there though because what else am I going to do right now with the economy the way it is? I have a family to take care of. I am a sales associate not an ICS worker and I always have to unload the truck. They don't pay me enough for all that. |

Anyone who thinks Wal-Mart is a great place to work has either never worked there or never worked out of retail. My background is manufacturing -25yrs- but do to family circumstances had to quit work for a few years. Upon returning to the work field during the economic crisis, Wal-Mart was the only place hiring in my town. The documentary you need to watch is Robert Greenwald Wal-Mart: The High Cost Of Low Price. The facts are at the store I work...

I have worked for Wal Mart as an associate in Lawn & Garden and now work in Electronics and I really like working there. However, I do not intend for this to be my "career" so I think that may have a big influence on it. I am a college student and work there full time. They have treated me very fairly and for me, Wal-Mart has been a great place to work at. I really loved my co-workers and even though the management is a little hard to work with sometimes, if you treat them with respect and do you job well, then you should have no problem. Best advice I can give to new employees: work hard, be extra friendly to co-workers and management, and DONT GOSSIP because that will get you in a lot of trouble. |

I began working at Wal-Mart about two weeks ago. It has been a horrible experience from the get-go. When I came in for my interview, it took the managers about 20 minutes to finally show up to the room. Then they ask me questions and all of that, then they send for another manager to come in. After he shows up, he basically just regurgitates all of the information that I had already been listening to for half an hour from the other managers. Then after this I thank him and go off to do my drug test. Four days after this drug test comes back clean, I start my orientation. First, we are forced to watch the movies that go over policies, history of Wal-Mart, etc. Then the next day we started our CBL's (Computer-Based Learning). My job (Cart-Pusher, which I consider myself to be highly overqualified for considering I graduated from High School with Honors and can speak English, as well as have 6 jobs under my belt at the age of 19). These long, drawn-out, poorly acted videos and quizzes went over things varying as far as Pest Control to Ladder Safety. Oh, and did I mention the 15 minute video going over how to use our box cutters? Anyway, after this was all said and done, they sent me out to the parking lot with no real instruction or training for my ACTUAL JOB (all of the CBL's covered general know-how, no real explanation or training for pushing carts or using the cart pusher machine). There are only 3 other cart pushers at my Wal-Mart, all of which are of Middle-Eastern descent and over 45 years of age. I am no racist or bigot, but it was honestly hard to understand what they were trying to tell/ask me. Anyway, about a week after I start in the "field", a manager pulls me aside after I clock in and says that she wants me to watch a video on the Cart Pusher machine (How to use it, safety features, etc.). This is AFTER I had already been using the machine for a week virtually unsupervised. |

Both on the same thing.I hope the Walton's rot in hell for the way they hire people to train "managers" to save money. They pay their employees low wages while the Walton's wallow like the pigs they are in their billions. Christy Walton (daughter-in-law to Sam) lives high on the hog in Jackson, Wy. on her 24 billion dollars. Doubt she or Jim, Alice, S. I actually just received a job offer from Wal*Mart yesterday, and I'm really excited! It seems to be a terrific company to work for. My interview went well. All the managers I spoke with, in all three parts of the interview, were terrific people. Sure, I know that people tend to stress out under pressure, but that doesn't make Wal*Mart a terrible place to work. My last job was a terrible place to work...I was a vendor. I pulled two 19 hour workdays back-to-back...that's a terrible company to work for. Now, I'm employed at Wal*Mart, and it's not just a job to me. I plan to move up and help myself by helping the company. I'm not content with just working in the deli department my entire life. Wal*Mart wants you to help them by advancing yourself, so...I'm currently enrolled at the University of Phoenix. I'm majoring in Business. I'm in the process of earning my Associate of Arts in Business, then on to my Bachelor's of Science in Business with a concentration of Marketing, which will be my concentration in my MBA, then I hope to have the time to earn my Doctorate. If I do my part...Wal*Mart will surely do theirs. It's how bad "you" want it. |

Wal-Mart stores is a horrible place to work. I busted my @ss in the meat department, never complaining or saying a word to anyone. I never missed a day of work or was late. Some sort of manager met with me and told me I was not a team player and they were hiring a maintance worker to fill a fulltime position in the meat department. The funny thing is I told the manager a couple of weeks before this that I wanted to be a good team player, and then this retard uses my own words against me kind of. The managers are retards, I am sorry, this is not normal. I male manager was looking at me with a smirk on his face, and I said " Why are you looking at me with that stupid crooked face?" He left. I have never been to prison, but Wal-Mart is like prison, you have to let the managers know that you would rather beat them down than take sh1t from them. Wal-Mart people are trash, Republicans snd Democrats are the same, but you can see how republicans win, retards and Walmart trashvoting for them by the hundreds of thousands. |

Wal-Mart to me is what the military used to call a sh#t job. Meaning no one gave a sh#t if the job was done and no one gave a sh#t if you did the job. A sh#t job is a job that one would take to earn a little extra change. It is not a job that one can count on for anything. It is a job that one puts up with between real jobs. It is a job a job that one makes very little money. Compared to most jobs, one works at Wal-Mart two weeks for one weeks pay. If one does see a need to stay at Wal-Mart, then by all means go into management. You will not get trained for your role as manager, but it is a sh#t job, so this fact seems to not matter to the Wal-Mart home office. At the Wal-Mart that I work at I do not know of anyone that likes their job, except maybe for the Store Manager and the Co-Manager. I do not know of anyone that works there that relies on Wal-Mart alone for their sole income. Everyone has another job or is in college or has another source of income or is using Wal-Mart as a way to make a little money until they can find a real job. I cannot speak for any other Wal-Mart, but the one I work at will replace a person quicker if they die then if they quit or fired. I am not sure about other people, but that last sentence alone is a very sad example of the kind of business practices that the company has. |

I have been a licensed real estate broker and former owner of a RE/MAX office. Also, formerly a manager at a computer company. With the state of the economy, I took a part-time job at Walmart to fill a gap in the real estate business. WHAT AN EYE OPENER!!! I have now quit Walmart after 6 months. I was not fired and have no intention of ever returning. However, if anyone is thinking of going there for employment, run for your life!!! Do absolutely anything but work at Walmart. If you are not a person who is strong of character, Walmart will beat you down. As a sales associate you will quickly learn your opinion or suggestions do not count, going the extra mile to help a customer or a co-worker does not count, and YOU as a human being do not count for anything. I learned that if you have the ability to fog a mirror, you can be a manager at Walmart... no brains required. I could write a book on examples of ignorance and lack of logic. I have way too much to say than the intent of this forum. So, as a professional who was temporarily filling a financial gap, I pity anyone who thinks they must work at Walmart. If you are new to the job market, please don't think all jobs are like this. Walmart will ruin your self-esteem while physically sucking every last morsel of energy from your body. You will go home after your shift feeling half dead, crabby and mad at the world. Life is not meant to be like that and too short to spend it at Walmart! |

I have been working at Wal-Mart for two months, and I absolutely love it! I must have gotten really lucky to have such wonderful coworkers and managers! The job is not hard at all! I work in the deli, which is the "most difficult" from what managers told me, and it is not even close to being any sort oif difficult. You have to work, sure, but YOU WERE HIRED TO WORK!!! Either a lot of you entered bad situations, are lazy, or do not know what hard work really is. I do not mean to offend anyone. I'm just being honest. Another note, I spoke to a Zone Supervisor about me entering management, and he is currently working on getting me into the next management training program! As I said before...it's how bad "you" want it. |

Yeah, you have been there for two months...try working there for 3 years like I did. It can start out great, it did for me. But later on down the line you will end up hating your job. Trust me I know what hard work is, and far from lazy. I was a Courtesy Clerk for 3 years, hardest job in the store had to push carts in the snow and the heat, so I know what I am talkin about. And the remodel made our situation worse. Eventually we got knocked down to two lines of carts in the store, which is absolute b.s. Take into consideration, you have only been there two months, be there for a year, otherwise no one will take your opinion seriously. But at least its workin out for you so far...with a bit of luck it will stay that way, but I wouldn't count on it. |

I have been with walmart for a little over a year now. I come from a background where you worked, no matter who you are. I have been in a management position at one of my other jobs, and i worked hard for my people. Thus, out of respect they worked hard for me. Yet, i find myself at Walmart where it's not the same. According to my management, they are told to make us work and not work themselves. I understand this military style thinking, but we are not putting our lives on the line to protect our country. We are out there saling low end products to people. I think the job itself is great, but the management makes the job difficult some days. When it comes to the hours and pay: I started off making 7.45 and hour at 40 hours a week. I now make 8.25 an hour but i only get 12 to 25 hours per week. If you do the math, it doesn't add up. The schedules tend to flux like a heart beat. Three weeks, you will get 12 hours per week. While the next two weeks, you acquire 25-32 hours per week. Also, the hours on conflicting. This week, Thursday, i work 2-11pm, then on Friday i work 7-4pm. I live an hour away. This would be perfect for someone that lived closer, but i live far away. I informed the management using the open door policy, but as you can see, nothing has changed this past year. Thus, Walmart scheduling of hours is a little messed up. The job itself is a great job. The customers can be fun to work with, and "sometimes" the management can be fun to work with too. If you are not willing to apply yourself and stand up against abuse, you can't move in this company. I say this because it can be both physically abusive (When your a man) and emotional abusive. All in all, Walmart is great for a temp job, not a career. |

I am or WAS an assistant manager working at Wal-Mart number 0631. To anyone who does NOT agree with the post has it easy in the walmart world. I started out as a cashier when i was 18 about 2 years ago making 8.25 per hour. I quickly moved on up to a CSM about 5 months after working there at 12.32/hr. We recently just moved from our little store to a new store, a supercenter, on April 13, 2001. This time last year I was asked to apply for a position in assistant management for the new store and agreed. I was making 14.65 per hour and i was about to recieve a pay raise of 40 cent I loved it at first because the people who once looked down on me now made me feel like somebody, but they would treat all of my old cashier friends like crap. When we started building in the new store I was in charge of the whole grocery dept aswell as HBA. I remember helping a co-worker who was a dept. manager put up some wines and having one of the other assitant managers as me what i was doing and joking about it. To be honest all of these people ride the clock or salary doing nothing but thinking of way to make someones life miserable. They think all employees are joke when they are the ones with so much power that they have no clue what to do with. One of my last days I was giving a 90 day evaluation to someone and when i read their improvements ASSIS. Manager Diana makes comments the whole time, I finally had enough of her mouth and I said, "You didnt keep your nose in your own business when I first started working here, so now its time to do it." She of course tried to get me in trouble with the store manager who simply told her we had equal power, and she has no rights to comment during the evaluations i am giving. I feel sorry for anyone who goes into walmart for a job, your looked down on and joked upon. Management at walmart is nothing but a competition to see who can get the highest up. |

invisible in Ossian, Indiana said: Walmart is not the place to work. The training program is very poor. The CSS's and CSM's don't like to answer questions, and they treat the employees like dirt. You know not to report them, because if you do, because of retaliation, things will only get worse. The employees are not happy here, and upper I worked at hell-mart for over 7years in bluff ton, in.....it was the worst experience I've ever had in my life. Some of the comments above, only the bad ones, describe my previous work environment. I voluntarily quit and I feel like a new man! |

I work at Wal-Mart in Arkansas for about 1 year now. I have never seen so many rude customers in my life. If you say anything out of line they complain and then the csms literally yell at you in front of other customers. I try to be polite but is hard when you get treated like crap. |

I have been sitting here reading all of your comments about how WalMart is horrible. Well, let me fill you in. Try working for a mall department store and then come back and tell me which is worse. I recently quit a job at Carson Pirie Scott (aka Bergners, Bon Ton, Younkers, etc.) to take a job at Wal-Mart. Before that I worked for Sears. The location I worked in shut down because it was a small store in a dying mall. 95 percent of all workers were told they will never be able to work for Sears or K-Mart ever for the rest of their lives, including myself. After working my ass off for 2 and a half years, that is what I got. Perfectly capapble, hard working people lost their job, and ALL benefits with NO remorse whatsoever. Even our store manager lost her job after working for the company for 17 years. Then I go to Carson Pirie Scott thinking it may be better. I was wrong! Much worse. I wasn't even "part-time". They hired me as short hour. Which is less than 19 hours a week. Now who the hell can live off that? Not to mention, when I became pregnant, they treated me like I was sub-human or something. Well, I finally quit that godforsaken job and never looked back. Wal-Mart gives out MORE hours. Yea, the work is hard, but thats what you get paid to do, WORK! Management may suck, but you gotta let it roll because guess what? IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO! There will always be that pain in the ass manager, that lazy ass employee, and gossip mills are everywhere! My advice, do your job and shut up. You don't like it, find another one. Obviously if you complain this much, you just can't handle retail. Yeah times are tough but, I found this position in the recession, you can find another one too. |

phillyphanatic2009 in Fredericksburg, Virginia said: Dont do it, you will be lucky enough to get that. Full time employees barely make that many hours. They always say they need to cut back on hours. Having group interviews is not professional at all. Also doesn't that go against invasion of privacy acts with some of the questions they ask. The government needs to start cracking down on walmart and there policies. They treat no one with respect. actually im part time getting 38 hours a week, you just got to make friends with managment, and ask for more hours. walmart is like the army, treat it like a rank. respect your managers. |

Ha-are you working for the corporate office?Really anyone who has worked there for over 2 years knows walmarts tactics. They give all new employees more hours ,so the "older employees" can be kept on their toes so to speak. The managers will also put We are hiring new people in your ear. This means in walmart language ,"you are replaceable"

DON'T TRUST ANYONE WHO WORKS AT A WAL-MART!!! I'M A WHO WORKED OVERNIGHTS FOR 4 YEARS AND 2 MONTHS. AS JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING; STOCKING, BACKROOM, DOOR GREETER, CASHIER AND UNPAID CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER. IT IS LOW PAY BUT IT WAS SOMETHING, TILL I WAS FIRED FOR SOMETHING OFF THE CLOCK AND NOT EVEN IN THE STORE. MY SO-CALLED BEST FRIEND (A CO-WORKER) LIED TO ME ABOUT SOMETHING THAT BROKE MY FAITH IN HER. I SAID, ARE YOU FU//ING KIDDING ME? AND THAT WE CANN'T BE FRIENDS ANYMORE, AND I WALKED OFF CRYING. LATER SHE RUNS TO MANAGEMENT SAYING I CALLED HER A BUNCH OF BAD NAMES AND THAT I WAS SAYING SHE WAS "HOOKING UP" WITH ALL THE GUYS IN THE STORE. I NEVER DID THAT. EVEN SO I WAS FIRED STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY SHE DID THAT AND WHY MANAGEMENT DIDN'T LISTEN TO ME. SHE HAD ONLY BEEN THERE A YEAR. |

i have been with wal-mart for the last 7yrs i at one time loved this job. but after the different co-owners came and gone and now the one we have now well thats all i am going to say they have no respect for there people anymore. i was a support manager for 2yrs than became a assistant manager also than i was force to step down after the new shift in management in my old store. they said and i quote them i am to pro-associate meaning i am for the workers and they do not want that as a quality for the management team any more. And i had nothing to say i was just baffled they had just told me this. and now it was not all ways like this, they are trying to make everyone stay late and cut them but and this is a big but there was a huge issues about 3 to 4yrs ago to were they were making people working off the clock or cutting the hours that the crew has worked and that is agents the labor law and there was a estimated 3.2 million dollars sent to the people that was forced to work off the clock or hours was cut do to overtime. i my self received 800 bucks because of all the overtime that was cut off my upper management when i was a support manager. and the store that i am currently at they are making us stay late and cutting are time scheduling us extra days during the first of the month and holiday and when we have visitors, even if you are a single parent and or going to school they are still making us do this and than will cut us towards the end of the week. i went from full time to part time which up here were i live is 32hr for full time but i am working any wares from 34-38hrs a week and i am still getting part time benifets. The company its self is good to work for its the management team that is the biggest issue. within wal-mart policy there is what they call open door policy which means if there is a issue no matter what it is you can talk to them about it and they have to respond to the issue in a professional manner. |

there is also a policy called the sun up sun down which is the manager that you went to has to respond to you by the end of the day or the end of the knight, if they do not know the answer than that manager has to tell you that he or she will get back to on the next schedule day. i my self used this once at my new store and i was being yelled at by one of the management team members. there is a tone of issues i have with the way that the store that i am at right now is being ran but i do not want to do or say much lol for the fear of losing my job because jobs up here is kind of hard to come by. but what i would like to know since this is a right to work state are they allowed to do this? make us come in when they want us to and cut your over time? i never worked in a right to work state and all my training as a manager was not in a right to work state. i thought even if it is a right to state there are still federal law to protect the employee/associates, is that true? |
