Here is a classic example of what I talked about in another thread just now about language. Using a different language from virtually everybody else on this forum is limiting your access to help to only those who speak Spanish. Are you simply not interested in the information that most department managers in this country may have? My advice is to speak English to be a successful department manager in the US. |

christine in Louisville, Kentucky said: spanish is not a difficult language to learn No it isn't but why post something in a language that isn't generally spoken by most of the others here? It is obvious that practically everything is written in English here so the poster got zero replies to whatever their comment was. Even you have not given Liz a reply in Spanish. I know enough Spanish to figure out what the person was saying but I am not fluent enough to be able to write a reply in Spanish and it is obvious the person does not want an English reply wouldn't you agree? |

Shay in Vandalia, Ohio said: It may not be difficult but my god we are in AMERICA speak the language please!! Why should I learn Spanish when they won't learn English????????????????? That is very close to my point of view. The whole thing has little to do with the particular language as much as it has to do with avoiding the idea of an "us versus them" situation. If everyone tries to speak the same language, we all appear to be cooperating. As for who should be the ones to change their language and learn a new one?... it only makes logical sense that it should be the language that most of the people in a particular country speak. If I go to France, you can bet I will learn at least conversational French even if I plan to only be there for a month vacation. In fact, it would enhance my experience of visiting France and make it more intense and enjoyable. |

I've spoken with people who are supposed to be speaking english but their dialect and grammar makes it difficult for me to understand them. I'm tired of "this is america so speak english". How about this is America and your free to speak the language you prefer? |

christine in San Antonio, Texas said: I'm tired of "this is america so speak english". How about this is America and your free to speak the language you prefer? You are correct that you are free to speak any language you wish, but by the same token, Americans are free to completely ignore whatever you say and are free to not be forced to learn the language you choose to speak. If you do not wish to communicate, then don't speak English but to use another language is the same as if I wrote this message this way. 0111 0100 0101 0111 1101 0100 0111 1111 0101 1110 1010 1110 0011 0101 0101 0101 1010 0110 1001 A computer would understand that but you can't. |

I have many I have been in communication with many people and there is discrimination in America against ALL Americans by NON-Americans(ILLEGALS). We have aloud more than what is seen of illegals to over run this country and disrespect our citizens by taking our jobs, our healthcare, our schools, our homes, our welfare system, and soon our SSI benefits. We can not protest in silence and be heard by The OUR President, OUR United States Congress, and OUR Supreme Courts that we are Americans First. As Americans our ancestors as a nation fought against King George and England back in 1776 for our rights to be Americans. Freedom of religion, bear arms and to speak ones mind about injustices seen without being killed for them. I live in Texas and have spoken to many illegal spanish speaking people who have claimed that they are here to run Americans off our land and to take the food from our mouths, our jobs away from us by excepting lower pay. They illegally buy GREEN CARDS at the local stores from those who just want to put more money in their pockets and do not care that what they are doing is against our laws and can get their green card taken from them and get sent back home. My grandfathers side of the family were from Hispanic-Mexicans but grandpa pushed that we were Americans First and only and all ties with the old country are broken. I do not have anything against anyone coming here to better themselves, just do it the right way. Except our laws do not break them, beliefs in our rights as free citizens, our ABOVE ALL OUR English language, and the muilt-cultural ways. Everywhere I look I see RED, WHITE and GREEN. They do not want to blend but change it all to suit them and their is no US in their way of thinking. Extreme NON-VIOLENT Protest is what I want to see, that is all. |

Language is what brings a society together. If you don't have at least one language that all accept as the norm in a group, then you don't have a coherent culture. All one has to do is watch the evening news to see this in operation. Someone on one side of the planet says something important and it is translated into whatever the common language is for that particular country who will be watching their television. If they didn't translate for particular countries, most of the world would not know what was going on and few people would watch an international news story. I have a little interesting story about language that not only is funny but illustrates this idea of having a common language to communicate properly and be understood. (cont'd) |

(cont'd) I had a friend in England that I communicated with for years on the phone and in e-mails. One day, she asked me what my plans were for the next day. I said that I planned to go out shopping. She asked what I intended to buy. I told her I needed some pants and that I wished to find some with big pockets on the sides. She was amazed and we discussed at length the desirability to have large pockets on the sides of my pants. I told her it was convenient to have them because it made it easier to get to my cell phone and to my wallet and cigarettes if they were in those side pockets. She says to me, "Why on earth would you need access to your cell phone, wallet and cigarettes while in bed?" I just sat there wondering how she could imagine I would wear the pants to bed. Then it dawned on me... in the UK, the word "pants" usually refers to under-shorts. We had a great laugh picturing me walking around the bedroom with huge pockets on my shorts filled with a cell phone, wallet, cigarettes, coins, keys, etc. :) We both were speaking English but there was much more of a difference than just an accent and a few dropped "h" sounds. A common language is important if one wants to be understood properly. |

I've spoken with people who are supposed to be speaking english but their dialect and grammar makes it difficult for me to understand them.
When it interferes with my getting employment and I and countless other English speaking Americans are being discriminated against because we are not bi-lingual, it's a BIG problem. I'm sick and tired of "this is America so we must speak Spanish" garbage. |

Don't get me wrong here. I am not saying there is anything wrong with the Spanish language. Look at it this way, if we declared Italian to be the official language of the USA then a huge number of people would have to learn a new language. All I am saying is to pick the language that most of the people in the country are familiar with and have the ones who are the smaller group learn it instead. It is just logical. |

I speak spanish and english.. It's great because you get to help other people who don't speak the other language. I think everyone should at least be able to learn another language other than their first.

You know I was reading this because I was bored one night and just had to write a comment. This thread appears to be a big argument about language and people's hidden bigotry. Was the topic not about department managers? The only thing mentioned in English is one phrase "My advice is to speak English to be a successful department manager in the US" sure everyone knows that; not exactly a big secret. I think the Spanish speaking lady is the most intelligent among the lot of you. If you actually crawled out of your cultural Eurocentric bubbles maybe the conversation would be productive. I don’t understand Spanish myself, I’ll admit it but I know how to use an internet translator. Try this link ets.freetranslation.com/ the translation is at times are hard to follow but I should hope you get the point. The translation of the original link is as follows: some mg shout us when they want that agamos the travago and if we are in the lunch they go and they seek us for desirnos what want queterminemos and if us do not they shout if do not we finish it and if oh special events grasp us travagar Sundays without paying us tienpo conpleto and they rest us among week for pay us not tienpo conpleto and if us quegamos do not grasp anything the conpania is very good for travagar the mg are not good with the enpleados As for my views on language I have no comment as it is not part of the topic. |

I thought this was a thread about the Department Manager's position at Wal-Mart. But a very interesting conversation to say the least. |
