I was considering applying at WAMU but after comments posted here was very hesitant. Less than a week later I got a call from a recruiter for a job. Two days later they lay off 96 people.

Washington Mutual's San Antonio operations center is losing 96 positions as part of the company's cutback of 1,000 jobs nationwide.
Spokeswoman Missy Latham said employees in San Antonio's loan fulfillment center were told of the layoffs Wednesday but were encouraged to pursue some of the new jobs still coming to the Northside center with the relocation of two financial units. More than 200 positions will be created for those units, Latham said.

"Our goal is to keep as many positions filled as we can," she said.

The operations center ended 2006 with 1,644 employees. WaMu CEO Kerry Killinger said last month that the facility could grow by 700 jobs in the coming quarters.

The nation's largest savings-and-loan, now known as WaMu, said Thursday that the 1,000-job layoff will eliminate its sales force dedicated to mortgage borrowers with questionable credit and will slash some of its wholesale banking operations.

The bank will lay off 75 dedicated subprime mortgage sales people and account managers, and integrate what's left of the subprime lending business into its regular mortgage business, spokesman Alan Gulick said.

Gulick said the company will consolidate three loan fulfillment centers and lay off a total of 340 workers at centers in San Antonio and in San Diego and Anaheim, Calif.

Washington Mutual will also cut 210 jobs and conduct an "orderly wind-down" of parts of its wholesale banking business, which includes trading mortgages and mortgage-backed securities and lending money to other banks, the spokesman said.

It is a very sad day listening to the local and national news, hearing of so many people unprepared for job loss! Those who prepared, won. Those who are unprepared..lost...and the real losers are both the children and their parents who now must face a harsh reality. It is up to each and every one of us to look further ahead and plan accordingly for such emotionally trying emergencies.
