Wamu layoffs San Antonio

Why is it that Wamu is already laying off employees, but if you look in their careers website they have openings for the same job that they are laying off. Why isn't Chase offering these same people position within their organization. Shouldn't they be Chase employees now.

I don't work at WaMu, but I did get an email the other day from their HR group saying they thought I'd be a match for an open telephone banker position. I found it extremely odd.
