I was offered a job by AT&T about a week ago. I recieved a packet w/ instructions to take a drug test and everything. I am a little worried about my background check. I have a misdemeandor on there from about two years ago, that has yet to be expunged. The charge has been dismissed, however. Will they write me off due to this?

Congratulations! I recieved a phone call yesterday with an employment offer. I had waited 3 weeks and had just about given up. They told me I start Oct. 1st. Although I have not went through the background and drug screen, but I'm not worried about those, as long as they dont do a credit check, yikes!

Yeah, that does make sense. But they started me out higher than any other company I ever worked for, and I believe the recruiter said 2 raises per year. I pray I wont end up one of those well paid knowledgable employees, scary.

HI, datboiwes, I'm not really sure. I was told that I would have to take a total of 2 weeks training. I start Oct 1st at the local store and the recruiter said that the manager would set up my training with me. But I am under the impression that I will be going immediately as training shuts down Nov 15th and I have 2 weeks to complete before that time. So I am sure I will be there during the time you mentioned.

Hey I presume there's still hope for me because I've been waiting now 2 weeks for a response. I've done the BEI and verbally given positive feed back as though they were gonna forward my interview process for the next step. I'm looking forward to working for the company because it can't be any worst than what I'm doing already...lol! I know money isn't everything but if you gonna drive far and deal with micro-management at least get paid for it. In a lot of cases no news is good news so hope that's it in mine. Whatcha think?

okkay i've worked for bellsouth once and left the company in 2001. Last year I had to take the bei at the conyers ga location. but of course of didn't pass the interview. now it is time for my bei retake and i've finally someone contacted me from staffing and said they were trying to verify my past employment with bellsouth. she said she didn't see it in the system. anyways she said she would contact me back with a date for my bei retake. Never heard back from her I finally contacted her via phone. she placed me on hold for 2sec. and came back to say that I am not eligibile for rehire. I'm shocked at this point. i asked how could this be so when just last year i had an interview and that nothing has changed. she said that she didn't know. and also that she didn't know what i needed to do. do anyone have any suggestions? oh yeah i also gave a written 2weeks notice when i left.

I dont think it will be as long as you are up front with them. They dont tolorate witholding information. You should probably mention it to your recruiter because it will show up, and when it does and you havent mentioned it, it could hurt your chances. But usually when there has been an offer and they are running all of the background reports and drug tests, you are in. But good luck!

Hi Rabbit Grey, just wondering if AT&T contacted you before you start working for them with the results of your background and drug screening results... I was hired nearly 2 weeks ago and the outsourcing companay AT&T uses, HireRight, stated that they completed and submitted my background screening info to AT&T within 1 day. I still have not heard back from AT&T regarding the results. Does anyone know when/if they will contact me regarding the status? I don't have any criminal background history and my driving record is flawless. Does anyone know if they will contact before I commence work in 3 weeks?

Hello 'Yo' in Arkansas, I don't believe AT&T will check 20 years back for a felony. The company they use, HireRight, only check 5-7 years back. What they will definitely verify is your employment background so be sure that your prior employment dates/employers, and contact numbers are accurate.

If you have further questions please let me know.

The difference between a customer service assistant and a customer service sales associate is that customer service assistants strictly provides customer service to AT&T customers in a call center setting (not req'd to sale products- just offer), while sales associates are 'required' to sell AT&T's services and products. If you apply for a sales position, you will need to meet sales quotas like any other sales job. If you apply for a customer service position, you will be required to provide superb customer service to AT&T's customers, in addition to being on a strict schedule; taking back to back calls and adhering to your breaks and lunch on time- not even a minute late).

I appreciate you so much for getting back with me. But on the application they asked have you ever been convicted of a felony (broadly like that)so I had to be truthful it did not say in the last 7 to 10 years. What do you think about that?

You are quite welcome 'Yo'! You did the absolute right thing about telling the truth on the application. It's unfortunate that during these economic times companies don't ask "Have you been convicted of a felony in the past 7-10 years?" They want to know if you've ever been convicted. I hope they contact you and everything works out. I've been employed by AT&T for a year now and absolutely love my job as a customer service represetative.

I need help!!! I applied for a job with at&t and disclosed everything on there. What I mean is I got a wet and reckless almost 2 years ago. I was informally offered the job and received my job letter. I got the Hire Right link and submitted the proper information to them disclosing my wet and reckless. The job does not require driving as it is an inside sales position in california. Will I fail my background because of this?

Hello Ta1985, I really do hope that you get the job. AT&T is very strict on the candidates they hire. HireRight will perform a 5-7 year background check and misdemeanors and felony's will appear. It's then up to AT&T to decide if they want to accept the charge. I am only speaking on experience because I work in administration/human resource dept for this company and I've seen them dismiss candidates for small misdemeanor charges. Although you'll be working in a sales/call center environment, they won't discriminate about the wet and reckless. The best thing you did was provide them with this information- that way they can't come back and say that because you didn't disclose this information, they can't offer you employment. Stay positive and trust me, they will be in contact with you soon. They definitely let candidates know prior to the start date. Good Luck and again I hope you get the job.

I did and it was not good... MY hr recruiter told me that they appreciate me being honest and self reporting the issue. However, she has to rescind the offer. It was frustrating because it was on my initial application, and on the next and on the next and then at the very end when I was offered a job they rescinded like they just found out... ATT is a great company and I hope in the future when this gets cleared up I will be able to work for them... Thanks for your input and information!

TA1985, I'm very sorry to hear that AT&T rescinded their offer, but you did your part in writing it on the application because even if you had not, they would have found out. AT&T hires a company named 'Hire Right' and they perform thorough background checks. I will inform you of this and I hope this makes you feel a little better. AT&T may be a great company to work for as far a stability wise, however any position in sales and customer service with them is very demanding, calls are constantly monitored and QA'd, and quotas and stats have to be met. Overall, no matter how much of a great job you do, their policies are so strict and you'd always be pulled in a meeting or side-by-side with a manager informing you of what you're doing wrong, so you have relieved yourself from a stress-free environment. The job market these days are very competitive and with almost every company performing background checks and discriminating against people with misdemeanors and felony's it makes it almost impossible for people to find work. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

I was curious bc I had a similar situation I disclosed information that didnt come up through Hireright but additional driving infractions came up that I failed to disclose but I used a sled check and it gave me all of my traffic violations and misdemeanors. I even told the recruiter upfront that I was not squeaky clean she asked about infractions on background and said that we could move forward. Now she says she has to give it to a director above her. When the recruiter doesnt make the decision does that usually mean they rescind the offer. This is for a Advertising Media Solution Rep. They are scheduled to call me tmr.

I just Got an offer today for a Premesis Tech job and was told to submit for the background check and call her back, so I submitted my background info and called her, she said she was looking for a closer area to my home for me to take a physical examination and she would call me back I did disclose that I had some some speeding tickets 2 that where actually binding one that was dismissed in court but I disclosed all that info. All of those tickets where rediculous 5-9mph over and I have taken the driver improvement course but nevertheless on my record. I am afraid this will keep me from getting the job considering that the position would be driving a company vehicle. Anyone know of any getting hired with speeding tickets on their record?

Hi Mr_Lea, I apologize for responding to you so late. I'm unsure as to why they are taking so long. When AT&T has an opening position, they commence interviewing even if they don't have a definitive date as to when the training/job will actually start. I would continue to follow up with them. Do you still see the position listed?

AT&T won't hire felons, and if they ever find out, you're screwed.

Still, for something that old, I'd recommend trying to get in to see a clerk/judge, explain that you've made amends and lived honorably these past 20 years, and an expungement could make a real difference in your life about now... It'll vary a bit from state to state, but usually if you've shown even 3-5 years of good faith, it's not that hard to get a felony expunged if you are persistent, patient, and polite. Of course, the nature of the felony may matter to some degree as well.

Talk to a (cheap) lawyer who does expungements, and see what they think. Happens every day.

Also, for those asking about expungements showing up in your record - if you have any doubts, just have your paperwork handy so that if hireright or AT&T asks, you can quickly forward proof of expungement to them. As far as I can tell, AT&T HR uses very strict "by the book" processes - if it's expunged, they technically "can't count it against you", but also if they find it on their own and you don't cop to it, they'll consider that dishonest self-reporting and reject you right there. But they're very understanding for things that should be expunged that still somehow show up in some database by accident.

Work with HR honestly and eagerly, and they will help you get in. They also won't tell your manager squat about any of it, which is also good. Your manager will probably find all kinds of reasons to hate on you as it is. ;)

One more thing: more than past tickets, you have to report any moving violations after you're hired, even personal vehicle ones, because they'll pull your DMV record every 90 days you are employed. So, tell your manager if you get caught speeding, or risk being fired on the spot. Yikes!

Hi Simone (or anyone out there that might know);

I am a former AT&T employee that is attempting to return to the company. When I was a CSR at AT&T, I had a very good record. I always met or exceeded all measured tasks/responsibilities. In addition, I received acknowledgement from CEO of AT&T West, VP of San Diego Sales, Executive Director and Director of my department for going above and beyond my job responsibilities.

I am concerned about my applications because I was convicted of a DWAI (wet and reckless) when I left AT&T, nearly 5 years ago. Some of the positions that I have applied for have the requirement of a 'decent driving record.'

Given my stellar performance with AT&T (but taking into consideration my conviction), what do you think my chances of getting the opportunity to interview for the driving and non-driving related jobs?

Thank you very much for the input!

Hello RMW, although you worked for AT&T and had an excellent record on file with them, they'll still perform a background check for re-hire and use a company named 'HireRight'. My recommendation would be to be honest and explain your situation on the application. AT&T has very strict policies on Misdemeanors and Felony Charges/Convictions, but I wouldn't allow your situation to deter you. Give it a try and keep me posted. I hope that you get the job!

Hello CoolNcalm, AT&T is so particular about any kind of charge that may come up when the background check is performed. They use a company named Hire Right. You will have an opportunity to give your side of the story. I worked with an AT&T employee who had a misdemeanor and was able to get everything squared away and AT&T hired her. Just keep your fingers crossed and be optimistic. Please keep us informed of your status. Good luck and hopefully you are hired.

Hi Simone, I was reading thru this forum and see your name and saw that you are working in human resources. I have a question...I started working with South Central Bell in 1981, went to BellSouth after Divestiture...my job was contracted out and i took a separation package. I hired back on with AT&T and worked 23 months in residential sales support. I really had a difficult time with the quota. I was reaching in the high 90th percentile every month (96%, 97%, etc.) but I could never get over the 100% mark. I went out on FMLA benefits twice for personal medical reasons. In all I worked for the telephone company over 18 years. My goal the entire time with AT&T was to get over the 3year hump so I could vest my service and get all of my seniority back. I was always a proud telecom employee. Finally, I was given an ultimatum...I could resign and rehire in 6 months as long as it was in a non-sales environment...that's what I did. I still have my written letter from my AT&T Director stating that i could rehire in 6 months. I waited 6 months...just chomping at the bit to return to work. But, Sadly, when I tried to return to work, I was told I was not rehireable. This just crushed me. I am even sitting here typing this holding back tears. It's been about 5 years ago when all of this happened. Do you have any suggestions? My former director even tried to go to bat for me. It is just crushing to loose all that time and to be told I could rehire..only to be told I couldn't. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you...
