Do you work at Dollar General? How did you find the job? How did you get that first interview?

Any advice for someone trying to get in?

I have been trying to just get an interview for over a year now. They always seem to be running the same ads, but never have called me despite my being well qualified for the position. It's a mystery why companies (the ones that always seem to have the same ads running for the same positions) don't reply after you've shown certain interest in being part of their team.

As a job placement specialist and facilitator for classes regarding job searching and interviewing, I can give you a few tips. One, persistance is a good thing as long as you don't become a stalker, managers are not going to hire someone just because they apply a thousand times. Sometimes when managers are in the hiring process they review applications and weed out the ones that are qualified, not qualified and over qualified. Yes, it is often that you are over qualified that causes the employer not to consider you for a position. I would suggest speaking to the manager and trying to convince them that eventhough you are over qualified, you want to work for the company. Turn over is a major concern for employeers and they don't want to hire someone who is going to be on the constant look out for a higher paying job. If you are not qualified enough, I suggest you come up with a presentation about your skills and your desire and eagerness to work for the company and pitch it to the manager. SELL YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!! Remember an application or a resume doesn't get you the job, you selling yourself during the interview is what gets you the job. Don't ever drop off an application without talking to the person doing the hiring and don't get an application and take it home with you, always fill it out at the worksite, it shows that you really want to work there and adds a touch of professionalism.

Thank you for your comments, very thoughtful.
I have attempted to discuss the position with (and sell myself to) the HR personnel, but was abruptly directed back to the website. I am actually not over-qualified or under-qualified for the position for which I have applied. Just weird because the ad runs consistantly and I cannot seem to get an interview with them. It seems to be common these days. Strange because running these ads on certain websites are quite expensive.

I have been a manager for four years now. I seem to have little stress with my job because I train my key holders to know everything I know. They work the plan-o-grams, they do the end caps when the book comes out. each employee has there assigned duties. I feel holding them accountable for there actions wether good or not so good build moral.. I have a great crew and I believe that makes my job less stressfull. I had a visit today from my regional to see if the ad was set. I made sure my crew was the one who received the thank you.. little things like that keep them happy.

Hi,
As I mentioned before, I have been trying to just get an interview for advertised District Manager positions in my area and I never hear anything. The ads continue to run month after month. My experience is in multi-unit retail management and it drives me a little nuts knowing that I am qualified and they are looking. Even a "thanks but no thanks" reply would make more sense than just not responding to my resume submissions.
Nan, Is there anyone that you know of that I can talk to about accepting my resume and getting an interview.

Thanks, Mark in NC

I dont know if you can but you need to get rid of the information that you posted on the net... Leaving your E-mail is exceptable to a point. NEVER LEAVE YOU PHONE NUMBERS THEY CAN BE TRACED TO YOUR ADDRESS..
if you really want a job I would suggest you go to the place of business and fill one out. If someone calls me and ask me if I am hiring I tell them NO even if I am because if there to lazy to walk to my store and to lazy to get off the computer I dont respond..................

Just some information to help some people. I work at Dollar General as a manager. if you want a job with this company Hear are a few suggestions. First go to the nearest store and ask for a job aplication. if you have management background I would suggest you have a resume and job application letter make sure you request the district managers name as Store Managers do not hire other store Managers and sometimes do not know if the District Manager is hiring. We are a small box company, with the most retail stores. I would suggest you dress for success when you visit. First Impressions are the best.

If you are looking for a part time job with Flexable hours then this is also a great company to work for. I would make sure when you ask for an application you bring your own pen use black make sure you have Id at the time you never know when your going to get ask to see it. Also follow threw make a phone to the manager a few days later listen to what they have to say if they are hiring or not or other stores in the area. DO NOT hand you application to a cashier. Make sure it goes to the manager be professional do not bring your family with you or your best friend do not wear shorts or show up in flip flops this a job you are trying to get. be flexable and honest. and good luck.. I know this is what I am looking at when people come in my store..

When you do a job search on indeed (at the top of the page)the results will be displayed. Then just click on a job that interests you. You'll be redirected to the website the job opening is originally posted on and there you will find instructions on how to apply. Good Luck!

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PART TIME JOB AT DOLLAR GENERAL THEN YOU NEED TO GO TO THE STORE AND APPLY TO THE MANAGER. EACH STORE HAS 3 FULL TIME PEOPLE AND THAT IS IT. EVERY ONE ELES THAT WORKS FOR THE STORE IS PART TIME. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR FULL TIME SUCH AS ASSISTANT MANAGER OR LEAD CLEARK THEN YOU SHOULD ALSO SPEAK WITH THE MANAGERS IN YOUR AREA GET TO KNOW THEM AND THE STORE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MANAGERS POSITION THEN YOU SHOULD FIND A WAY TO CONTACT THE DISTRICT MANAGER MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A RESUME HANDY AND PAST EXPERIENCE THAT WILL HELP THE JOB ALONG. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR DISTRICT MANAGERS POSITION THEN YOU NEED TO CONTACT THE DISTRICT MANAGER IN YOUR AREA AND FIND OUT WHO THE REGIONAL MANAGER IS.. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A RESUME, THAT YOU HAVE DISTRICT MANAGERS EXPERIENCE. ANOTHER WAY IS FIND JOB FAIRS DOLLAR GENERAL IS KNOWN TO BE THERE. LEAVING AN ONLINE RESUME IS SO UNPERSONAL AND CAN BE OVER LOOKED POSSIBLY.. GOOD LUCK AND HOPE THIS HELPS..

Does dollar general hire ex-felons? My friend was recently offered a job and he is awaiting his background check. He was arrested in 2000 but didn't get convicted until 3 years later. He is educated and a great person who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with "so-called friends". He has worked consitantly since then, but is nervous that he may be rejected because fo his past. If you have any insight please let me know!

Do you have any idea who decides whether or not a person with a criminal history is hired or not or is there any exceptions to your reply? Isn't it discrimination to out right state that this company doesn't hire felons? Just looking for insight!

I work for Dollar General. I have worked for them now almost 4 years I am a manager and have been for 3.5 of those years. I love my job as well as my company I work for. Dollar General is one of the fastest growing company and one of the biggest retail chains in America. as far as them not hiring felons well most company's now do back ground checks as well as random drug testing. I can not disclose the information of how we obtain the information or what company Dollar General uses to obtain the information.
What I can tell you is when and if Hired one does fill out a form that a manager has to send in to the background company, If someone has a felony on there record then they are not elegable for hire. as far as some of the comments I have read above and how some people put down the company well I am sorry they have not had as great experiance as I have. Good luck with what ever decision you make I am glad I have made the one to stay with this company........

I read all the replies from you, Thanks for the positive attitude, Like many applicants I applied and was answered in a timely manner, I had a phone interview with HR, an interview with the DM and an interview with the store manager, I submitted my resume on line twice and was answered twice. I was not selected for the store I applied for, but the DM encouraged me to apply at another location. Thanks Again.

Mac good luck with the Job interviews. I honestly and truely believe that Dollar General is a great company to work for. I am proud of my job and the work I have done as well as the accomplishments I have made with the help of Dollar General one thing I do find is that they are a very supportive company. Yes there are things that need to be fixed and worked out but then again isnt that the case with most companies. I can say since I have been with the company I have seen many changes and all for the better.. good luck.

how many customers do you have a day, and what is your basket size? our store is busy right up to close. Our cashier can't really get away from the register, and as fro the mornings, as i was recovering the back of the store, I had a customer come in and steal the literacy fund. whats yiur policy on working alone and recovery? I'm really interested in talking to someone whos been with the company awhile, because in my area, we are all new, REAL NEW, ITS LIKE THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND.
THANKYOU for your help

Wow they stole the litercy fund thats nuts.. as for the recovery well we were told that you only get the area that you can recover and still maintain a view of the register. when the next shift comes in then the person that comes in or the one that was alone can then walk the store and recover the areas that were not recovered. As for my basket size it averager 10.5 - 11.7 and we do well over 300 customers a day.. our scan time is under 4.7 and.. do you use your EZ planner and have you recieved the new on that came in the other day not the one from last month.. the ez planner is great.. do you know how to call store to store if not let me know your store number not your phone number i work at 6 am on thursdays.. to about 5pm.. its my one long day .. looking forward to talking with you.. I will tell you that I have seen so many changes with Dollar General since I have been working with them.. Its gets better every year.. when you make it threw christmas season you can make it threw anything with us..

.........To me it really dont matter what state you work in or what Dollar General you work in.. We are companied owned and the rules are the same all over.. I dont know what to tell you people that dont like your job but if you dont like your job the then leave.. Stop your complaining and make a difference.. I took a store with over 100grand of merch.. in the back room a store you could not walk in and floors that have not been washed in god only knows how long..The Team I have as well as my self turned it around we are double digits everyday and love our store..it seems to me if your all that unhappy then why stay.. find another job because honestly.. The people that dont like there jobs with Dollar General are one of the main reasons we have stores that not up to standards so leave you job and let someone eles who might really care have it instead.. what good is it to complain all the time and not do anything about it.. there are ways to make a difference in what you do you just have to find a way.. I have seen many changes and most good some too quick to adjust too immediatly and some are overwhelming but the way I see thats going to happen with any company or any job.. Ask for help I dont know about most of you but I can pic up the phone at anytime and call any store in my area if i need advice on how to do things we even give eachother pick me up talks it helps a lot with the season around the corner..............last month I read the Dollar General storie about a manager that made such a difference in her community I am sure that manager does it for her own self satisfaction as well as the satisfactions to her customers it is people like that manger that keep some of going.... Good luck and once again Sorry...
