Effective 6/26/08 all sales managers, logistics managers, logistics supervisors, DKC's will be laid off.

New pay structures are in the works, no more salary associates exept for store manager. Everyone else will be a $10-$12 per hour key holder supervisor.

This is the begining of the end for Officemax. What a shame.

Store Manager and one ASM will remain on salary. One ASM will be laid off in every store. Most stores will get one sup and 2 specialists who hold keys. Specialists will make 12.75, sups will make same pay as will ASM.

Here's a little secret. The decisions about who stays and who goes were made prior to the layoff announcements. The interviews were utterly irrelevent.

Anyone unfortunate enough to stay better start looking for a new job, because Office Max won't be around for long. They don't even have the money to pay out all the severence packages in one shot.

I'm not surprised, because any company that doesn't know who they are going to layoff prior to announcing layoffs is totally incompetent. I'm just curious what you based your information on?

I KNOW EXACTLLY WHAT YOU MEAN. I WAS LET GO FOR MAKING 4 MISTAKES IN 1 MONTH. THEY KEPT
3 PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS FOR YEARS. I HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT 1 OF THEM AND THAT IS WHEN MY TROUBLE STARTED. THEY LET 8 PEOPLE GO YESTERDAY, 08/01/09. 6 IN ONE DEPT AND 2 SUPERVISORS. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN MORE LET GO. THIS WAS IN OTTAWA.

It wasn't a store, it Ottawa is a call center where we got calls, emails, faxes, entered orders and did collections in the ssr dept. That is where 6 got it. I have now heard the whole order entry team was let go but I am not sure. I was on that team. Peresonally I am probably filing a complaint with the eeoc for several reasons. I have debated hard about it since I was fired. I had asked for hours to be modified because of a medical condition and that is when I started getting written up. Mary

Oh, didn't realize it was a call center - but that's still a large number to be let go at once. Sorry to hear about your troubles with the company. I hope everything works out for you.

I went to work there in 2006 because I was pretty depressed. My mom had died of mesothelioma as did my grandmother. I had a hard time getting through it and still have some upset about it. Everything was fine and then I was put on a team with a person who you would call the playground bully. I defended another girl one night who was crying hysterically. The next day
the whole team was called one by one in to the manager's office. I was last. They stated all the crap about OfficeMaxs core values-my thought how did it get to management as my sup wasn't there when this happened. Anyway one thing led to another and I got it and I knew I would. Thats alright as in the end I feel you get what you dish out. It is sad to see how they really don't go by their core values as they are good. Anyway there have been probably 40 people gone from Ottawa one way or another since the first of the year. Very sad. Maybe Sam should take a little pay cut.

I AM FINE. WHAT I HAVE IS CRONIC. I have filled out an eeoc form and hope that they wap these guys good. If they are going to say they are EEOC then they need to follow the rules. They seem to have a problem doing that. The law dealing with the disabled was updated in January 2009 and I am thinking they missed it.

Hi,
I think OFFICEMAx WANT TO PORTRAY THIS WONDERFUL IMAGE OF how wonderful they are and all the stuff about the core values but the problem they have is they don't follow them in upper management. I am doing alright-what happened in myu family nevers leaves you. If you went throught the experience of watching someone die from meso you would know what I meant. It is truly devastating. I appreciate your kindness. Mary

Has anyone heard if they are going to eliminate the impress supervisor position?

I am sick to my stomach!! Just got off the phone with a best friend of mine. They canned the Impress manager, Operations Supervisor/Keyholder/, Impress Desk Top Publisher, Impress Supervisor. 4 top positions in the store. Human resources was there & informed them ,along with the store manager. Apparently the position of Impress manager is history & the other positions have been eliminated and re-named, and offered at part-time status!!!
This is a company wide initiative, in case anyone was wondering. So expect to see good ole Sam on"Take Advantage TV" with another sob story on how the company has to "tighten" it's belts, like he did last time when he did this!! Funny since the company still doesn't match stock purchases since last year, AND, the stock keeps going UP!!! I'm sure the stock holders will benefit from this maneuver, once again!!! Just a footnote to this: These people collectively had more than 43 years with this company!!!! Way to stick it to them "To The Max" Officemax!!!! Where's your INTEGRITY you're constantly telling your employees to have????

The impress manager position was quietly taken out of the picture over the past year or so. If someone quit or was let go for other reasons, they were not replaced. The official elimination of the position happened Monday. The Impress Supervisor was retitled and pretty much everything else stays the same. In the minis and advantage stores (I don't know if this happened in the hub locations) the Operations sup was taken out when the re shifting of ASMs happened. Key holders are still full time associates though.

This is a hub store I'm talking about. It is a fact that they let go of the Desktop Publisher to re-title the position for a part-time one, and as far as the Impress Supervisor goes, the same happened to him, let go for a part time position and re-titled. The Impress Manager's position was quietly being phased out company wide, however he was just told today he was being laid off!!!All 4 positions were done in this store today!! Oh, & Operations .supervisor/keyholder was a position you were allowed to have in your store if you did over 3.6 mil yearly according to corporate. It's funny how this store made over 3.6!!, however this position was done away with as well today!! Tech Specialist stays with keys & full time, as well as Furn Spec. So basically now, You will be having part time people, that know next to nothing in these positions, , getting paid next to nothing, trying to run these stores! God help the managers & their assistants and 2 key carriers who will be picking up the slack!!!

I knew that some of the larger volume stores got to keep their ops sup. The store I'm at wasn't one of them. We didn't even have a DTP. It's scary to think that I've see postings for DTP positions. You would think that they would have just not replaced any people that left (for whatever reason) since they obviously planned to eliminate all of them. Out of curiosity where is the store you're talking about. I was told that the "impress specialist" is still full time.

Johnson City, Tn and no unfortunately he's not! Otherwise they would have kept him, he was good at production, knew DTP (some) and was really reliable. But he was told it was to be a newley titled part time position. Ofcourse he can't afford that, he's got a baby, wife & a new lease on a bigger apt. for the baby to have her own room. It's such a shame!!

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend and I'm not doubting you, but I'm wondering if he can fight that somehow - the job description says that it's a full time position. (I just pulled out my copy and looked) It specifically says work full time hours - Unless they are splitting the hours between two people.

Ya know what, that's interesting!!! I'm wondering if their next step is to keep 1 manager, and 2 key-holders and that's all the full-time the would have in each store!! I know of stores that can operate on this because I've been in that position! This would eliminate the Asst. position (1000 jobs). The other alternative would be for them to only have 1 manager, 1 asst. & 1 key-holder. This would work even better for them considering the first 2 are salaried positions & they can work the heck out of them, working them over 40 hours, etc and not pay them any overtime!!! I'm sure if I figured this one out, it's already in their future"cost cutting plans". Unfortunately!!!

Oh, and P.S. I almost forgot!! Remember how all Specialist-Key-holder positions were to pay 12.00 per hour when they re-titled a while back? This was a memo you could pull up via company email!! Well, I know of several stores that pay as they please. Some Florida stores pay $10.00 per hour for this position, and has ever since the last company re-structuring. Did you happen to keep your memo on this? I wish I had!!!!! Can you believe it?

I believe it - I wish I had the memo too. There was something interesting on the portal today. New Impress Staffing Standards - Long story short - Impress Manager and Impress Supervisor are still on there, along with Job descriptions. DTP is still on there as well. My curiosity is - why are they on NEW standards when they were supposedly eliminated?

- Was this comment helpful? Yes / No Reply - Report abuse

They are still available because depending on your staffing model you may still have one. Most stores are hiring keys at $10 - $10.50/hr Nature of the beast i suppose. Talent costs money, no money = no talent. However with the current state of the job market there is plenty of talent who will work for that and work hard just to have a job. As for eliminating the ASM position, doubt that would ever happen, its nearly impossible to run a location on 3 keys, unless you're a 14k and dead as hell, which in that case your store should be closed. Just keep your heads up and work through the adversity.

That may be the case and I agree with you. But I was told that those 2 positions are no longer in play, anywhere. I can't imagine the whole district here falls under the "nope, you don't need a manager or supervisor anymore" staffing model. Besides that, according to the chart our store should have a supervisor - and our supervisor got changed to specialist.

Impress payroll dollars also got reduced today. I agree the chart does not agree with what they are saying. Impress is a high profit center so i can see their reasoning behind the changes, however it now make it that much harder to produce good numbers in that department in the higher volume stores.

also, TAP pretty much went out the window - courses are not even on the portal anymore, but a yellow belt is supposed to be there when not staffed. I think it's crazy to not have an impress person there every hour that we're open. Orders are going to be messed up.

If we show that it can be done with less help, they'll only take more away; not give anything back. I'm going to still do my best, however, it's frustrating to have less and less while being told that we are valued. It sure doesn't feel that way.

I honestly hate to say this, but if they can figure out a way to cover the stores open to close hours having a manager , assistant, and 1 key-holder, I believe this will be the norm in stores. I also believe they will start closing stores earlier as well, everyday in most areas. Store closings are a no-brainer this year. If you're not making enough money, you will be closed. (I'm sure the list is getting long and arduous). There's nothing we can do but our best in the circumstances. We can quit but I've been with the company 15 years and I wanted to retire in 5 years. So I work hard & do what I can. That's all you can do. We're stuck, for now!!

If you increase your sales to the next payroll staffing model you will get more payroll dollars. Customer service is one of their three main objectives, running under staffed stored will not accomplish great customer service and thats not what they want.

They will never run a 3 key staffing model, its not good business sense plus youd be paying OT to the hourly keys to make the coverage work. They arent going to force managers to work 60hr weeks just to cut 1 key out. If you have 15yrs with the co. i'd do the best job I could because you cost them alot in payroll and bennies. One thing i do believe is they may be papering the old timers out this year due to the cost of keeping them. Thats just my opinion. Keep your head up and work hard. FYI our store has 4 keys and a total of 14 staff.

I think you're right about that. all of it!! I think the more money & more seniority you have you'll be the 1st to go. I just got news from my manager today that the Impress guidelines are of course based on $$$$. If you fall below expectations in sales for Impress in your mini, you will no longer have a supervisor position.--you will have to re-apply. In our district they want regular associates to watch impress for the last hour it's open every day, instead of other impress associates. This will help cut impress staff hours and use the one associate we have over there till we close. We usually get busy during the last hour believe it or not,, for some reason. The associate has to be at least a "yellow belt" in impress however. This will definitely cut into our store recovery time, etc, etc. Oh well, you do what you gotta do!!! I don't think Sam is done yet with cost cutting initiatives for 2010!! Never say never about the 1 manager, 1 asst, 1 key carrier. that would be 1 position over 1,000 stores!!! You know what happens when you say "never happen" with OMAX!! I've seen so much stuff over the last 15 years nothing surprises me anymore.!!! Thanks for your figures on your store!!
