Send a resume, don't go through the company website first. The people who will hire typically look at resumes submitted, not the applicants registered in the company website. In response to the comment below, URS is not "a gov't contract company". We do local & federal work as well as major projects for private industry. URS is a large company, has many offices and is growing. My office has been hiring like crazy recently and probably will continue--I hear the same story from other offices. I don't know what position you were applying for. It's possible that the office in MN had a glut of resumes for your field. If you really are interested in working at URS and are willing to relocate I'm sure you'd find an office interested in your resume and willing to contact you for an interview. Not getting a response to your application is not entirely unusual and typically you should expect only a small percentage of replies from the total number of resumes/applications you send out. It's just a fact of job hunting. In my case, I specifically remember I never got a reply from Tetra Tech when I first started job hunting, but I did get a reply from URS (Woodward Clyde at the time) and obviously got hired. I've been with them for almost 10 years now. Like every thing else in life, it's just a roll of the dice. Good luck to you all in your job searches!

I continue to read these comments and I am surprised, shocked and disappointed. I think with every company - there is the good, bad and ugly. And being hired is a competition - the best candidate is selected, just like in all other activities in life.

Regarding applying at URS Corporation - The correct procedure is apply for positions via the website - as with any company, if you have an internal connection, it helps. Yes, referrals are a benefit and the bonus is substantial, however, you (as the candidate) must be a the right fit.

Relocation - it depends on the position, the location and if the Hiring Manager and department are willing to pay relocation. I don't see the level of the position in play - just the related cost and responsibilities.

Regarding hiring practices - "They don't hire Blacks, period" is completely false. I happen to be Black, have worked hard to get where I am. All decisions are based on related experience and skills for the position. In many cases, software knowledge, certifications and experience are required. If you don't have those tools, you are not going to be considered. Doesn't matter what your racial background is.

So - healthy comments are good. Each company can learn from what is being said by others. Remember, you have worked for good, bad and ugly companies - so, your comments are jadded.

I have worked for this company for 10+ years, the problem I see within the corporation is they dont use their resources properly, where other offices can do load sharing, they act if they compete against each other. Nepotism some of the good ole boy network, so call project managers that are not qualified underestimating work due to lack of experience. Responsiblity goes to the engineer stamping the project and of course for the same budget. Its not what you have done, its what you have done for me lately. As far as salary you have to threaten to leave to get a proper adjustment. Ive gotten a bonus one time a year ago, meeting obligations that go above and beyond what your position requires. All and all some of the environment is good, but needs alot of improvement

The culture at URS should be compared with other large corporations, not other engineering firms. As a publicly-traded company, they are extremely conscious of their financial performance for the benefit of shareholders and much less concerned about producing exceptional work.

I worked for URS for about 5 years and since I had an unusual specialization, I worked on projects with about 15 different offices across the country through interoffice work agreements. There is a reluctance to share work between offices because that means sharing revenue. I found that management differs greatly from one location to the next. Some are much more cooperative than others.

I will tell you they are driven by numbers. The regional managers are always comparing one office to another and they will tell an office manager they have to improve their performance targets for billings, billable hours, booked work, and of course, net revenue. That may include telling them to eliminate payroll by a certain amount.

When it comes time to cut employees, they will look at the hard numbers. Even if they have work booked ahead that will require more people, they will not hesitate to cut quickly and deep to keep the numbers up.

Hi,

Do you have any information about their overseas positions? Do they use the same tactics when hiring for overseas positions. I started to apply for positions in Kuwait, although they state that the positions are contingent on acquiring the contract. Of course I have no idea when the contracts will be awarded, I imagine within several months if they started hiring now.

URS WILL rehire you. I know three engineers who left URS, and came back. In fact, I also know a GIS specialist who left, and came back 6 months later, and then left again. They look for the best talent possible that fits the personalities of their senior leadership and managers. Don't listen to B in Chula Vista.

I have very specific experience in the A&E field. Applied for a URS job out of state and received a rejection email rather quickly. I don't get it...the job description matched my experience exactly. Does anyone have any insight?

I work at URS, we recently had a listing for an entry level person. We got over 300 applicants in 4 days- trust me we cant get back to everyone. We did bring in a new hire, but he was lucky that his resume made it through the screening and landed on the desk locally. We DO NOT take walkins or mailed resumes. You have to go through the online system.
