accounting career transition due to layoff

I just got laid off from a corporate financial reporting job in the insurance industry last week. I want to transition to financial analysis or something similar but most of the jobs I find pay considerably less than I have been making. I really want to get out of the month-end close process but I also don't want to shoot myself in the foot by essentially starting over at a more junior level position. I don't have time or the money (or the desire) to sit for the CPA exam. Any thoughts on what else I could pursue that would be interesting, not necessarily straight accounting, and not make me have to take a huge salary hit? I'd rather not go into public accounting, either.

@tag44 - thank you for the suggestion. I am currently working with a few recruiters here locally, though, and need more specific advice about how to make a lateral career move.
