I am honestly in the same situation as you Candace. I graduated with a bachelors in Art with a focus in New Media, and I've been plugging away nonstop for a few months now. I'm currently working in a restaurant as well. It really depends on what field you would like to get in to. If you have a focus that you are leaning towards, go for it, and just add more and more to your portfolio. Also what really helps is getting an internship, I'm currently interning at two places (that's what's great about having a flexible serving job). What everyone is looking at is your portfolio and experience.
I recently decided that I'm interested in getting into art direction, but in order to do that I will need to go to grad school for advertisement and design, or try to land an internship at an ad agency. Since grad school can obviously be expensive, I'm doing mock ads and doing ads for people I know to build my portfolio and eventually apply/get noticed.
I know it's very stressful but you have to keep plugging away and things will fall into place. I noticed your post was from a year ago, hopefully things are working out.
