I have a degree in engineering, but for the past 7 years have had housekeeping/janitorial type jobs. I can't get a technical job because I have no recent experience, I would be satisfied to be a housekeeper but can't get a job because employers don't believe that I will stay. I was a janitor at a Dunkin Donuts for one and a half years, and I didn't mind it. How can I convince an employer that I will stay (at least a year)?

And there be the conundrum many of us face. If I apply for certain jobs, my experience is not recent enough. Another type of job and I will jump ship in a heartbeat. How do these employers know these things? They are psychic (or is that psycho?). If they would just TALK to me, I could tell them, but even then, I suspect they would not believe me.

Perhaps if we were to state in our cover letter that we would be willing to sign a contract for a year, I wonder if that might help.......
