I recently acquired my CDL Class A license. I went to an eight week nights and weekend couse at a very respectable school. When I got my CDL I was excited and ready to go to work. I was hired at a local company. My first and last day was a freaking nightmare. It waw supposed to be a 4 week training course. #1. The trainer had a bad BO problem from minute 1. #2.I had to endure this for 13 hours. #3. 2 ten minute breaks (if that) and no lunch break. #4. I was yelled at at least 4 times. #5. He tried to compress a 4 week couse into one day. #6. Last and not least, the guy slept while I was driving for at least 2 and a half hours!! Needles to say I did not go back and they begged me to give them a second chance. NO way in hell!!
Can anyone out there beat this?? Just wondering.

good luck. sounds like you went to Swift. I hear most places that take on new drivers are about the same. You just have to keep going through mentors until you get the right one or make it through the 6 weeks training. I personally went out of Swfit before that happened , because I have a problem with being lied to. I do not put up with it.

Hey Marcus,

Thanks for the reply. It was not Swift, I can tell you that. Right now I am working in a samll factory, just to build my confidence up. If all the companies are like that then they can all go to h. I might try for a dump truck driver job after winter. Later. Mark

I am sure they are not all like that. Problem is that the trainers are just in it for the money and do not have the desire to teach. A real teacher is a certain type person.
I will tell you that if you find a job as an end dump driver, I think you would like it. Best job I have ever had. Good money for doing nothing but driving around the town and some in state stuff. Home every night unless some out of town job comes up . But no insurance or benefits at most small companies. But what the hell it is experience and good work.

I went to werner enterprise as an otr trainie. The trainer's truck was spotless. The problume was it stank. The gye only showered once a week and he smelled worse than the truck. If that was not bad enough he would punch me of burn me with a cigareat if I made the littlest mistake. I called my student driver manager to request a new trainer and was given the choice of living with it or getting off the truck. Thank god we came across my dad in Springfield Ohio. Thanks to my bad time on the road with this gye I will never get in a truck again with someone I don't know. I would like to know if any one else has a similar expereince with a driver trainer. My email is zr2z71@yahoo.com Sincerly Richard C Cole former werner employee number 410355.

Richard,

Your experience with Werner is totally uncalled for. If you
have burned marks to prove it, I would sue them!! What you
went through is physical abuse!! When I worked one day I did
not go through that, thank God. What are your plans now?
I want to get a job as a dump truck driver or light delivery
driver. I went to school at Clark State in Springfield, Ohio.
ONe of my classmates went to Werner, but I do not know how he is doing. Right now I am working for a small factory in Brookville, Ohio just to build my confidence. Later, Mark in Ohio

Marcus,

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas. I am trying for a job as a end dump driver, but no one is hiring right now.
IN fact the job market around here is terrible. I am applying for jobs as far as Norfolk, VA. DAyton, Ohio is a big GM city aand they are laying off like crazy. I want to get the experience, it will come in time. Later, Mark in Ohio

Merry xmas. I can tell you that here in Wichita about april or maybe in March, it will be very busy for dump trucks end dumps and mixers. . We are building a new , I guess concert hall or whatever. It is large and expected to take 2 years. It is already under construction. They just started tearing down old buildings for it. There is always lots of that sort of work around here in the summer. Draw unemployment in the winter here and there.
Something to think about any way.

Also, some new casino's are going to be built here soon. Perhaps you might like it here in Wichita. Plenty of work for a guy with a clean record. The mixer guys advertise for trainee drivers alot. usually starts at about 13.00 , 12 for dumps. That is not bad pay for these parts.

well it is not that hard. Most dump companies just want you to be able to pass the drive test. Driving a dump truck is nothing. The end dump is a little harder to get but there are lots of places that will hire you. mixer guys will usually train you. I just have a problem because of my felony. But I and 2 others hired on as end dump drivers tight out of school. In a couple months or so it will be easy jobs to get around here.
The harvest crews are also good for some otr and local driving experience.

Marcus, thanks for the info on the job situation in Wichita. It sounds really great there. The Dayton, Ohio area is depressed. There is no major construction going on. People are getting laid off. Truck drivers are being treated like dogs. Me moving to Kansas is something to think about. In fact, I just had a talk with the wife about moving to where the jobs are. I have pretty much had it with this area. Happy Holidays again!! Mark in Ohio

I have been driving a truck for thirty years and have never run into some of the problems you new guys are. That is terrible. I am now a drivers ed instructor and would never burn or punch someone for making a mistake. I am trying to open a cdl training course, sounds like you guys need someone who cares about teaching more then the money. I taught my brother to drive a truck. He use to cuss me out because of some of the things I made do with the truck. It took me 7 months before I let him test. He got a perfect score. He thanked me after getting his first job and driving on his own for about a month. I have a standing job offer as a trainer with his company. Some people do care, after all you are going to be on the road with me and my family. Don't give up, its a great carrer. Good luck to all of you. Joe

Joe, Thanks for the encouragement. Let me tell you though, what I went thru in one day, I will never forget. I worked for a company in Tipp City, Ohio for one day. What a nightmare. I had to endure a 13 hour day with a guy that stunk like a chicken coop. I had 2 ten minute breaks, with no lunch break. I was yelled at 4 times or more. The trainer got to sleep at least 2 and a half hours, this was while I was driving the interstate for the first time. The guy had a skin disorder, which I was not told about. I must have hooked up to ten trailers this one day. I did the math on sleep. I was expected to go home, get maybe 6 hours sleep and then come back and work another 13 hour day!! Did not add up. The company begged me to give them a second chance. I gave them stipulations. They could not meet any of them except to give me a formal letter of apology. This has left a bad taste in my mouth. Happy Holidays to you Joe and your family, Mark

I went to a local cdl school. It is supposed to be a very good one. Well I can tell you that for some it is not. The class I attended was headed by the head instructor. He evidently did not like the students he was given . The other classes seemed to have a positive experience.
Our class however did not. Class started at 8:00, the instructor showed at 8:30 or so. He was outside smoking. We had about 2 hours a day of class between the 3 or 4 45 minute smoke breaks. After 1 week of class we started on driving skills. Same problem. We were supposed to start backing up after 3 days of driving on the range. We , however started backing 3 days before we took our cdl test. The other instructors were there and wanted us to start practicing 45 degree backing. We did not even know how. One smart assed instructor was showing us how to do it wrong . He finally got caught but nothing was said to him about it.. Fortunatly the instructor that gives the test cut us some slack and gave us more tries than he was supposed to so we could pass.
If not for one instructor showing us some tricks to pass the backing up test , most would not have a cdl right now.
I learned to back up when I got my end dump job. The man just told me " get in and go, you will learn " I did.
So anyone in Wichita ks should stay away from a well known technical college school on N Seneca.

If your classroom teacher is good, you need to at least have an idea of what to do with the truck when you get in it.Thats what you need to do, get in and go, pratical is the best way with a coach or trainer close by to help. again don't give up. have a good christmas

Glad you are honest Joe. I think the whole industry has the "Survivor" mentality. If you cannot cut it you will be voted off. I talked to a guy who just runs a yard moving trailers around, I could tell from the conversation how he treated his personnel. I know one thing. I know why truck drivers are mostly mean. They are sleep deprived!! Mark

Hi,
Want to live in Wichita , Ks ? Cornejo and sons has no problem hiring girls. They always need drivers for mixers. But this time of year they want experienced mixer drivers. But come spring they will need dump end dump and mixer, they will train mixer drivers in the spring when there is lots of work. usually 14 an hour for mixer and 13 for end dump , dump may be 12 .
Kansas paving always needs drivers and they pay well and will train mixer drivers at 14 I think .
Lots of good dump and mixer jobs around here all the time. As long as you have a clean criminal record. In a month or so there is going to be a whole lot of hiring going on around here. Casino's going up. A new arena. Lots of construction .
There is a company , dont know the name, but they have the contract to haul off all the houses, thousands of them, and contaminated dirt from Coffeyville , ks. Destroyed in a major flood and contaminated when the oil refinery overflowed. That is going on right now.
I drive an end dump. not much money and no insurance but I have a violent felony on my record so I have to take a little less I suppose if I want to work.

Oh, by the way. 12-14 an hour here is decent money. living here is far cheaper than you are used to on the coast. 450 a month will get you a nice house with 2 or 3 bedrooms.

Hoke moved to huber on taylorsville rd, across from the old hardfill. I f your familiar with the area, its where rip-rap rd turns into taylorsville rd. Im supposed to start there in mid december haulin salt from cincy to dayton area ODOT stations. Im a truck foreman for a local paving company, and things are tough. Lay-offs came early this year. Stupid economy screws alot of good hard working people. Just not fair.
