Working in a law firm for approximately 30 years, I have seen very little advancement. Sometimes in the larger firms, you may find an opportunity where a secretary who has a four-degree will apply for a supervisory position, but that doesn't happen often. Usually, they go outside the firm to find replacements for supervisory positions. Overall, I have seen little to no advancement in my 30 years of working as a legal secretary. After working for approximately 25 years as a legal secretary, I went back to school to get a paralegal certificate, only to find that most law firms today want you to have a Bachelor's Degree.
