Despite what the enrollment office promised as to externship placement and job help, I finished my billing and coding program and have GOTTEN NO WHERE. I can barely get the "externship" director to help me and I am pretty much on my own. Anyone else have this experience?

I have the same problem as you are facing now. The career counselor promised that I could completed the billing and coding program including the externship by June 2008. I completed my program in May 2008 and still waiting for an externship (11 months and still waiting). I sent e-mail and letter to the Campus Director and got no response from her. CCI @ JHU has poor staffing.

I am experiencing the same thing. They are not equiped to meet the students needs and their program is a big scam. The personnel is ignorant.
CCI @JHU need to be reported to the better business bureau. I think we should get our money back!

We should put CCI @ JHU on the media. E-mail Clark Howard or Robin Meade for direction. Hoping we could get our money back.

I have registered for the program and thankfully have not started classes. I have been calling the Baltimore campus and the Director, Crystal Caldelas, for over a week and leaving messages with staff as well as on their voice mail and they have yet to call me back. I am going to ask for my registration fee back since they are apparently not running a legitimate business. I second that they should be reported to the better business bureau as well as the media. I can't believe JHU would attach their name to such a front! Hold on I may have just gotten through to the Director, nope I spoke with a Leslie Powell who set up a meeting with me for Mon, July 6th in Columbia. She informed me that they were currently void of a Director in Baltimore, but were interviewing and training one in Columbia to take over the role. I inquired about Externships as well and she stated that they have two externship directors on staff so that should not be a problem. I am still not certain of that, but time will tell. I will keep you posted and please do the same.

Regret in Spanaway, Washington

You can be a coder without a certificate from a college. Call American Association of Professional Coder (AAPC); the agency does offer class to take the exam. CCI @ JHU charge students hand and arm and only prepare students to take the exam. There are no teaching involve. Don't waste your money and time. I regret taking classes there. It has been a year and the Director of Career Service can't find me an externship. The Director of Campus has not response to my e-mail or letter since Jan. 2009. Very poor services. I am in the process of finding an attorney to sue CCI @ JHU.

Why do you need this externship? If as you say they train you to take the exam, why don't you just take the exam and become certified?

Yes I graduated in 2007 and I've temp here and there. I recently had a position with bayview in baltimore in which my illness forced me to take time off but it wasn't for a billing position. No one has every heard of the program including the people who works for johns hopkins the program just used the name and is not affliated with the hospital. It is now under a new name

I "graduated" in 2004 the teachers were not competent and the director had no idea what coding or billing was about. NO FACILITY WILL "EXTERSHIP" YOU DUE TO HIPPA requirements think about it, they would have to clear you to view patient information that would cost them. Why dosent CCI "extern", "intern?" you at Johns Hopkins? Becouse, when you are done with the program that totally sucks your not a QUALITY CODER OR BILLER! It would cost $16,000.00 to attend CCI at JHU. I recomend Medical terminology, anatomy from a Junior college at the cost of about $700.00 including the books then take an American Acadamey of professional coders "AAPC" approved coding class (you can find one on the web)for about $1,000 to $2,000 at the very high ends, then you must get certified $400.00 for classesto prepair for the exam. After you pass you 5hr KICK ASS exam you must contine CEU's for the rest for your career 36 CEU'S every 2 years also very expensive to take make sure your employer will pay for your CEU's,also, you will need new books EVERY YEAR this is also a must. Now Really you can expect to be paid 30K as a new coder if you are a biller it will be closer to 25K... If this is for you I wish you success..PS... you can work from home after several years of experience.. Dont count on it as a new coder also remember lots of expence associated with codeing from home Look at the HIPPA standards and watch out for the new ICD-10 this is the NEW CODING PROGRAM THE UNITED STATES has initated for 2013 the is WAY WAY different from ICD-9 taught by CCI@JHU and you will have to re-test .... SO DONT GET tricked... no matter what they (CCI) say they are just selling a dream not an education!!!!!

Yes. I graduated in 2003 from Concorde Career College after taking the Insurance Coding Billing Specialist program. They never tried to find an externship for me. I went back to the same school this past march and took a refresher course in the same program; 4 weeks long, and thousands of $$$ less; only to find out I was not eligible for externship; they told me, however, I am entitled to "lifetime job placement". Which, I'm receiving a little help with. I just apply to coding and billing jobs in hopes that someone will give a person a chance. The school is doing something to help me with finding work in my field of study; but it seems like "too little, too late". Don't give up though! Make them do all they can for you; good luck.

out dated equipment in Baltimore, Maryland

So, I am a student at the Columbia campus. The only reason I signed up was to better myself and ton get the much needed refund check. An admissions person came to my social service office and asked if I needed an extra couple of thousand dollars, and I said yes. Of course now I regret signing up because once I got to the Fianacial person they told me something completly different.Rob was very up front. When I said I was going to leave Shelly called me and said I wwould be stuck with all of the loans and fees I signed up for. then she made me sit with the campus president which by the way seem like he was on drugs. He also said he would send me a bill for the full amount. I knew what I know now I would have walked out the door. PLEASE BEWARE...

The school is what you make out of it. I had those same fears when I enrolled my son there He graduated from the school in Columbia about 18 months ago and externed for Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and got his certification (on the 3rd try). He worked for American Radiology in Owings Mills for while and then got a better job at Med-Star in White Marsh. I think the key is staying on them to get the externship and then GET YOUR CERTIFICATION ASAP!!

I've read where people on here complained that the school was a rip-off and just taught to the test. To me that was a good thing. The best advice I can give you is to start taking the test and keep taking it until you pass. Don't get discouraged if you don't pass right away.

Good luck.

The school is now closed. They really did advertise something they never could deliver on.
And the staff there was horrid. I am glad they are out of the door. I would like for JHU to start up something that will actually not be associated to some private institution but Johns Hopkins' because everything JHU is gold...
