kadi in Indianapolis, Indiana said: I just register to take the nursing home administrator exam, if anyone who took exam may give some tips, welcome I took the state exam for Missouri and the federal exam. Missouri has a class that teaches you what to study for here. It was so helpful because the state has so many regs and without that class, there was no way I could have known what to study for. See if your state has the same. Also, I took Townsend's two-day seminar on the Federal exam. His book came along with the class and it gives a lot of info on the five domains of practice. He also had sample exams of 150 questions (he had 5 sets of 150 questions). This was so helpful because it gave me an idea of what to expect. I also purchased NAB's book ($130) because a collegue of mines who is also licensed told me that was the best book he's seen that would be helpful. I did notice that some of the questions in the NAB book was on my test. The difference is that I waited until I was fully aware of the content before I scheduled the exam. The best advice I was given was to study one at a time. If you are required to take a state exam, study for that one only, take it, and then move on to the federal. Studying both at the same time can be confusing. Hope this helps! |

The NAB seemed to be alot about business management and the state is only about the written rules. If you have experience in the field this will work against you on the state exam. Know the rules and do not reflect on your experiences on the state exam. |

I am taking the NAB in a couple weeks - I have never taken it before but I went to a review course and several people in the class had taken it repeatedly! It was reported that there are numerous versions of the test which differ greatly one from the other and I suppose it is the luck of the draw on which one you get. I am from Kansas and I completed the AIT which was really non-existant. I have been a DON for years and not certain if that will help or hurt. I am really wondering if I should take those fake tests on the NAB site or not - Looking for someone to enlighten me.... Dianne |

I had been a DON and I took the sample test on the NAB site, it didn't hurt but what helped the most were the sample tests that Mr. Allen has on his web site LTC Education. I would highly recommend buying his on line course. |

Yes, Robert Townsend will be in Missouri giving the two-day seminar for the Federal Nursing Home review course June 2nd and 3rd in Springfield at the Holiday Inn North. For more information call Michelle Walters or Jennifer Baker at 573-893-2060. MHCA members are $175 per person and non-members are $360. Study materials will be provided, but for the book, it costs $100, but wait until the seminar to purchase it for $95. I took this course when I was studying and it was really helpful and Robert did an excellent job in teaching it. |

kadi in Indianapolis, Indiana said: I just register to take the nursing home administrator exam, if anyone who took exam may give some tips, welcome Study hard. Use your common sense. I was not that experienced in skilled nursing, but I am a nurse and I know that helped. Prayer helps as well. Townsend's book is really a great source. Work with the business manager will do wonders. The financial portion is very hard unless you are a "math" person. Good luck |

I just finished my AIT and it has been quite hard to get a job because of lack of experience. I am not looking to be an administrator but I am looking for any position such as marketing or assistant admnistrator. |

I am looking for information on a course to take in nursing home administration in the St. Louis area. I will be pursuing a license for nursing home administrator. I have many years of experience in Rehab Dept. Management in long term care. Do you think I should take a course or just get the book by Joseph E. Townsend or James Allen and proceed from there? |

I also acquired the Joseph Townsend book as well. On top of doing both of those I also bought a interactive CD distributed by the NAB and alot of the questions on there were similar to the actual federal test. Also during the course you can purchase extra review books as well. The new federal review course is 6-2-08 at Holiday Inn North, Springfield. Go to www.mohealthcare.com/seminars# for the information. You can also go to the NAB website and it gives you places for material also. Hope it helps and good luck. |

This is such an informative site, especially with all the discussion questions being asked and answered. Hopefully, I will soon be taking both tests. I was just wondering if anyone had any books that they want to sell? Also, I am looking for any advice for preparation other than what has been mentioned here already, if there is any? One last question, which test was harder, your local state or the national one? Thanks all. |

Does anyone have any information regarding the qualifications to become an administrator for a nursing home? Do you have to be a nurse? |
|
pow294@classicnet.net in Anthony, Kansas 60 months ago |
No, You do not need to be a nurse. I am but it certainly is not mandatory at all. Most states require a 4year degree in some type of related study ie management, business, human resources etc... Most states also require that you comple an AIT - administrator in training, which varies greatly by state. Then there is the state test and the most dreaded national board exam - NAB. Pay the fees and dues and then there you go - you are a administrator - and why shouldn't you be a miserble as the rest of us.... I mean with the incredible regulatory issues and sue happy culture.... not really - even though those things are true - I really do enjoy my job. |

Judy in Memphis, Tennessee 60 months ago |
Thank you so very much for the information. I have worked in a long-term care facility before. I really enjoyed talking to the residents and doing things for them. I think it is a very rewarding field to be in. You mentioned AIT..how long is the AIT training and who do you get to accept you into this program? Thanks, again Judy |

Did you find the exam extremely hard? Any suggestions for passing the test? I have attempted it 4 times and failed by NARROW margins (1 to 2 points). I have extreme test anxiety. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
