I have an interview with the ACS in NY for the Child Protective Specialists position. I wonder if anyone can give me any tips for the interview and also some of the questions they will likely ask. I really want this job badly but I have had no previous experience in the field(I just graduated), so I would like to really shine in the interview to up my chances.
Thanks

Working as a Child Protective Investigator... Know the law. You need to read the report very thorough. Contact the reporter for additional information. Review the age of the child to decide where you need to go to see and interview the child along and make your observations on the child such as any physical bruises on the child. See other children at home. Do not allow anyone to intimidate you. You are responsible to protect the child. Contact your supervisor immediately to conference the case for further directions and or recommendations. Detail documentation is very important on your investigations. Commence your investigations on time.
I have 10 years of experience as a Child Protector. Base on this info. you would do just fine on your interview.

So I was totally wiped out after being in the same room for 9 hours be prepared to wait and wait and wait then have an interveiw and have to answer several questions, as far as they go I cannot reveal what they were otherwise we can be disquailified. If you are passionate about this position and working with children you should be fine, it is not just a paycheck it is your life from the moment you walk into your office until you get home. They will let you know that day whether or not you are considered.

Hi Teresa.

What a disappointment. I went yesterday and early. Two people entered the room and guess what? They informed us that the hiring pool was canceled due to the fact that they had hired the people they needed yesterday. The majority of the people were ok with it. However, I was so upset. I was in a state of shock. I really want this job. I have been waiting for a long time. I guess that's the way things work with the city. I really hope they call me again. At least that's what the lady said. Maybe in a month or two. I really want to do this.
P.S. I am very happy for you. Congrats once again. I am sure you'll do fine.

I'm planning on taking this exam in two weeks. Does it matter how long you take to finish the test? And if anyone knows any prep material out there. It's most likely an aptitude test that can't be studied for... but I figured i'd ask anyway! Thanks in advance!

I bought the Child Protective Specialist booklet recently so that I can be better prepared for the test and the questions are out of this world. The questions alone on the practice booklet seems discouraging. My question to anyone who's taken the test and used the practice booklet is, are the questions on the practice book similar to the actual questions that are on the test?

Also, I know that the waiting list is 6 months; however, is there anyone out there who took the test within the last 3 months and was interviewed recently?

Hey Teresa,

I know this question has been posed to you before, but I'm not sure if you saw it. Did you score a 96 on the exam, or in the 96th percentile?

I took the exam yesterday and scored a 93.75, was kind of disappointed in myself but the examiner said it was a great score off of what she had been seeing lately.

Stephanie,

You can only do it on the day of the exam. It's a first come first serve type situation on the day of the exam.

I went a week ago for the Wednesday 1:30 test, and was locked out.

I showed up yesterday at 4:30, 90 minutes before the test, and I was the second to last one admitted (there's only 72 spots at CTC).

Bad news for you though, the test won't be offered again until October from what I was told yesterday.

Hi Josh

Your score is pretty good. You just have to wait for ACS to establish a list after 6 months. Your number will be pretty high on the list. They should call you within a month from when the list is established ( guessing). Good luck

Hi Lepina
I scored an 83.75%. Do you think I have a chance? Honestly, I thought that I was going to perform much better than what I did. I was extremely nervous and didn't eat prior to taking the test. I am praying that they call me because I'm working a part time job and live on a strict budget. I didn't qualify for the waiver because I am technically working. It may not seem like a lot but that fee really did a number on my wallet. I speak a different language as well so I hope that helps. Did you go on your interview yet? Also, have you started training?

How long after you took the test did:
(1) they placed you on the list?
(2) called you for an interview?
(3) it take for you to start training?

what's going on? i'm taking the test next wednesday august 31st. i see that it takes 6 months for a list to be established. my question is what is the hiring process? the announcement doesn't say much about a driver license requirement? i'm familar with the law enforcement hiring process and I wanted to know if it's the same or similar to ACS? I really want to work in this field and for this agency, you're able to get your MSW and can also move up in the agency if you choose to. thanks a lot in advance!

Hello,
I think you will be just fine.
They establish the list after 6 months. You'll get a notice in the mail with your list number.
About 1 month after I was sent an envelope with an interview date and some paperwork required for the day.
Interview was about 2 weeks from that day. Be prepared to stay about 9 hours there for the day of the interview. Eat and bring smth to drink. Its draining.
The same day if you do well on the interview they make you a job offer and training starts about 3 weeks after

www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/quizshow.php?title=selection-test-child-protection-worker-barclay-child-protection-agency&quesnum=9&showNextQ=yes

Hi Patrick:

I took the exam at the link you provided! Oh my goodness, how exhilarating it was to read and get 93.33%. As I was reading the scenarios and other statements, I realized that we see this every day of our life and we hear about the many things done wrong by CPS. Someone mentioned that an agency will call you if the result is "Yes", who will call?

I am considering taking two exams as a Child Protective Specialist and Caseworker. I do hope that I can score high because I love helping children and families. I have been doing home visits and the parents are receptive to the aid and help they cannot easily grasp. We are like angels to them. I have had two difficult families who were very aggressive in attitude and I just lent a little ear and a little love and that was all. One parent tried to accuse me of taking her off the list and wanted to pass the buck. I simply took her back down merry lane of her demands and preferences and she realized that it was actually her wrong. However, I was eager to take her into my caseload and develop a relationship with her...to me it is not about who was right or wrong, but helping the parent learn accountability. I also wanted her to know that I was there for her and her family.

Home visiting is awesome and I am ready to move forward. My degree is in Psychology/Education. My long term goal is to own a day care center where families can reach out and know that they will be guided in the right direction. I am going to continue my education and take Business Administration; thereafter, Human Services.

Hello,
I am sorry to tell you, but as passionate as you might be for this job, there are certain things that you Must know. You are required to do the job of at least 10 people . You have to investigate, you have to meet the entire family, doctors , teachers, etc etc . You have to write reports about each meeting. You have to consult supervisors. You have to take and file cases in court etc etc. Do I need to say more? This job is for young people with no children and families. Good luck and all the best. Ad far ad the residence, you can call DCAS and ask

no one has mentioned this, but a caseworker also has to be very wise. Remember that you are investigating real human beings, especially if you yourself are young and do not yet have children of your own, to know what it is like to be a parent. And sometimes false reports are made. Always treat everyone with dignity and respect, and conduct fair and thorough investigations. See truth and be careful not to let bias blind you. It is easy to fall into the trap of being "against" the "bad parents" while you are protecting the child. Yes, "bad parents" do exist. But very often, supportive interventions can help keep families together and make them stronger. Investigations are very stressful on families, and inexperienced caseworkers can be misled into assuming normal defensiveness on the part of stressed parents who have been accused, is evidence of guilt. when, it might simply be stress of the investigation! Especially in the case of false accusations, which happen more often than you might think. Be wise. Be cautious in your investigations. Do not play God. Try always to support and strengthen families, which is the other part of the two-fold mission of child welfare services. Not just take the children away. Be very, very certain you know what you are doing. Be very certain of your conclusions. Mistakes by caseworkers traumatize and destroy families.

It's not difficult. You should just go and take it. Take your time on the exam and you'll do fine. If you wait, you might regret it. It's not an exam that you can study for. It's more of an aptitude test.
