I have an interview with the ACS in NY for the Child Protective Specialists position. I wonder if anyone can give me any tips for the interview and also some of the questions they will likely ask. I really want this job badly but I have had no previous experience in the field(I just graduated), so I would like to really shine in the interview to up my chances.

Know the law. You need to read the report very thorough. Contact the reporter for additional information. Review the age of the child to decide where you need to go to see and interview the child along and make your observations on the child such as any physical bruises on the child. See other children at home. Do not allow anyone to intimidate you. You are responsible to protect the child. Contact your supervisor immediately to conference the case for further directions and or recommendations. Detail documentation is very important on your investigations. Commence your investigations on time. I have 10 years of experience as a Child Protector. Base on this info. you would do just fine on your interview. |

You want to take some classes or major in one of the social sciences....I majored in Social Work, a lot of people now are majoring in Social Work or psychology if they want to work in CPS.

yes very stressful, you're going to be dealing with things that you've never seen before and you have to remain professional at all times.....and not let your emotions overshadow what you have to do.....hope this helps a little bit. |

I am a Psychology major here in Toledo, OH and I am working on a paper for a Pre-Professional Seminar class. I was wondering whether some of you who represent the social work field could give me a little advice on some of the advantages and the disadvantages to working as a Child Protective Social Worker. I am considering getting my Masters in Social Work and would prefer to work within the mental health aspect of social work. Any comments on this would be appreciated!

I've been in the business for over 10 years; salaries and credentials vary, sometimes shockingly so, state to state. Even localities can vary- in Maryland, statewide you need a BA in Human Services for entry-level caseworker; but 2 counties require Masters' in Social Work and a license before they will even look at you.

You will be hard pressed to find better experience at crisis intervention and assessment, and you will never get better experience at understanding how legal systems, mental health, substance abuse, family law, domestic violence, juvenile delinquincy, hospitals all interact.

I am trying to find an internship working for CPS. I have not had any luck regarding this. All I find are job postings. I am mainly looking for somewhere to work in Sacramento, CA. I will be graduating with a Sociology Degree Political Science and Spanish Minor. Hopefully I get into grad school for my MSW. For the time being, I am looking for an internship and cannot find any websites to help me with this. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look or how I can find internships? |

I really have no idea how this works. I think that they call people in the order of their test scores. I have no idea how many people they hire, etc. My score was pretty good, but I took a lot of time. I was worried at the begining but it turned out okay. I am 3/4 of the way through my MSW so perhaps that helped. Also my mother was an English teacher so the grammar is easier for me than the other stuff. I was wondering if they are testing for other ACS jobs. Good luck, I hope you get the job that you want. I can't wait six months so I am looking at a lot of different kinds of jobs. |

However, you will be on the list. I was placed on the list 1 month ago. I just received the notice for my interview. My score was 81.75. I speak different languages too. I don't know if this helped |

It is impossible to provide services effectively with the amount of cases that is given to each CPI (Child Protective Investigator). If the system does not change a lot of children will stay at risk because the investigator does not have time to assess the risk properly. Over worked and under paid. |

The starting salary here in NY is 42,---, I can't remember the exact amount and after 6mts goes up 6,000 so it's not too bad. I will definitely post a comment after my interveiw tomorrow about what the process was. |

So I was totally wiped out after being in the same room for 9 hours be prepared to wait and wait and wait then have an interveiw and have to answer several questions, as far as they go I cannot reveal what they were otherwise we can be disquailified. If you are passionate about this position and working with children you should be fine, it is not just a paycheck it is your life from the moment you walk into your office until you get home. They will let you know that day whether or not you are considered. |

Teresa in Brooklyn, New York said: How did it go? Hi Teresa. What a disappointment. I went yesterday and early. Two people entered the room and guess what? They informed us that the hiring pool was canceled due to the fact that they had hired the people they needed yesterday. The majority of the people were ok with it. However, I was so upset. I was in a state of shock. I really want this job. I have been waiting for a long time. I guess that's the way things work with the city. I really hope they call me again. At least that's what the lady said. Maybe in a month or two. I really want to do this.

I'm planning on taking this exam in two weeks. Does it matter how long you take to finish the test? And if anyone knows any prep material out there. It's most likely an aptitude test that can't be studied for... but I figured i'd ask anyway! Thanks in advance! |

Are there any positions left? I thought all the jobs were filled already!?! If they aren't filled, I'm going to take the test this week. I wish you all the best of luck! |

I don't know how many positions there are to fill, but I do know that they are still giving the test throughout July, August and I believe September as well. Good luck! |
