RUN LIKE THE WIND!
I have a B.S. and a M.A. both in Human Service. You would think I would be able to find a job giving me enough to pay a mortgage/rent and leave a little over to save for retirement and emergencies. Finding a decent job with a decent salary in Florida is literally impossible. The power's that be treat the state as if everyone here are retired.

I moved here a year ago from New Jersey (worked in New York City) and it is one of those things I wish I had not done.

Good luck!

Hi! I moved to the Orlando area four months ago and I have not found a job! I have a degree in Businees Administration with a minor in Marketing. I did not think it would be this hard to find a job. I've been to temp agencies and even a few interviews that were a waste of my time. If anyone knows who is hiring during these tough times, any information will be appreciated! Thanks

gotta move to where the jobs are. I would love come home an live in Florida but the job situation is bad and it takes to long to get a job
Here in Omaha Nebraska you can get a telemarketing job that pays at least 10.50 and hour to start plus commissions. Most people I work with make about $2500 a mopnth take home pay and I am a student.
CSI Rentention Specialists. check careerlink.com

It is cold as heck so that may be one reason not to come. If you got boots , hat , gloves, whatever you can make it like the rest of us these next three months.

You can do substitute teaching - for $9.50 an hour. Then get a part time job for nights. Better than nothing.

I would discourage anyone wanting to move to Orlando due to low wage offerings and inadequate job opportunities. I am working on my masters. I am counting the months when I get the %4$$ out of Orlando because I have yet to find a good to by the bills! I have been getting by on mostly savings and student school aid.

Janet try applying for a social worker position with the government. It pays and their are a lot of positions available. You would be counseling and servicing veterans and/or active service personnel from/in iraq. I have a family member that does this. He also receive awesome benefits. I wish I had a master's in social work. I would have applied. I think you can find job aid from myflorida.com.

Good Luck Jersey girl! : )

Hey,
Did you all see the clip from 20/20 about how college seemly becoming more overrated? It did not discourage higher education, however, it shared how people with degrees are making similar wages of those without a degree. They showed people working in positions they could have obtained simply if they never went to school.

What do you mean can you do this? Note: Some jobs you can work doing if you have the transferable skills and ability to selling yourself when trying to get the job. Education helps, yet some jobs don't require a degree.

Looking to move to Orlando area because NJ is just too expensive.. all things considered. The savings in utilities and car insurance alone is roughly $547 a month. Now, reading that there is absolutely NO jobs, is very disconcerting.. there HAS to be something! I went to apply on some job posts and the posters of the jobs dont ever reply to my inquiry. I do not understand why Florida is being described as no employment.. NJ is at a 10% unemployment rate also.. so what are people doing to make money?

Orlando, Fl is a Hospitality industry and therefore the pay is very low. Most people that move here have high expectations, but the fact is that there aren't really many opportunities around. I have been in the Timeshare industry for many years and it has been very disapointing! Laid-off twice in 2009 along with thousands that were involved in the industry aswell and we cann't find jobs; tried going to school, but there's no grants and unemployment can only go so far. looking to change carreers and interested in Insurance field. Which Insurance Company in the area is considered a great company to work for Part-time basis? Anyone?

my husband and i just relocated to florida because NJ was way way way too expensive.. the car insurance alone for people like us, in their mid 40's, no accidents, no violations and no lapse in coverage is over $2K a year with allstate.. no freeeeeeekin thanks.. in FL it's at least half that if not more ! as far as jobs? dont fret..hubby went on second interview.. and got hired (in the timeshare business - but not what you think!) a recession proof company - those that OWN timeshares and havent been able to rent them.. thus, havent been able to make money.. he is now with a company that provides the answers for these folks.. and this guy says even the lazy 20 something year olds are easily (EASILY) making $800 a week.. well, my husband is not lazy.. so I think we'll be just fine!!

dont pay attention to the nay sayers.. there's no jobs in NJ either!!! contrary to what anyone says - the entire country is in a pitfall with respect to income. at least with florida, the expenses are less! Rent alone in NJ for a 3 bedroom home is minimum (MINIMUM) $1350 then you have to add everything ala carte on top of that (including car insurance).. here in Florida, $1095, includes the basic phone, basic cable, internet, and water! cant beat that with a stick! NJ is not the place to go .. Florida is way way more appealing.. dont listen to the people who say it's not a good place to go.. it really is.

Jobless in Orlando, Florida

I moved to Orlando months ago. I'm a 20-something but not lazy at all and no one seems to be hiring. I don't party, drink, or smoke. I'm as respectful and clean-cut as you can get. However, despite applying to nearly every job no one gets back to me. When they do they just have me come in to fill paperwork.. THEN not get back to me. My fiancee and I have been selling everything we own on ebay just to make ends meet but it's at a point where we've sold everything but can't afford to go buy 20 dollars worth of groceries. I'd love to know what company your husband is working for ma'am, because I'd march straight down there with my best suit and tie just to hear, "I'm sorry.. we're not hiring" just one more time.

He went to Global Resorts Management.. it's not timeshares but it's a company that helps people who own them and or rental properties and not able to rent them out. The owners provide the leads. They are in Orlando off I-4 xit 74A.. Grand National Drive (something like that)
I am sorry I dont have a number for you. They just hired some more people..but from what he told me, even the young people working there are doing pretty well. So I hope you can get hired and soon!

Thanks! I'm going to head down there tomorrow. I'm sorry if I sounded rude, I've been getting rather frustrated lately. My fiancee has a Bachelor's and far more meaningful work experience than me and she hasn't been able to find anything either which has made things difficult. We're especially frustrated because we intend to get married next month, but can't even afford the cost of going to the courthouse and filling out the paperwork. I suppose that's enough venting from me, thank you for the advice!

Timeshare is definetly the way to go.

Those of you looking warehouse positions I suggest you think about applying for a LOGCAP job. Its logistical support for the military in iraq or afghanistan. I was unemployed for almost a year after Circuit City liquidated but I started work out here in december. The pay is well worth it if you think you can handle working in a warzone. You are on a military base at all times, living conditions are not that bad when you get used to them. 4 of the major companies out here with contracts are Fluor Daniels, DynCorp, KBR, ITT Systems.

They also have positions for just about anything with these companies. A/C , Construction, food service, pest control, Safety, firemen, travel, mechanics. I'm making 120,000 a year doing what I'm doing, completly turned my life around. I paid off all my debt (12,000 in ccards, 3,000 dental, 5,000 car loan) within the first 3 months. I'm now debt free and that boulder on my shoulder is gone!

If you have a reason to be in Florida such as a sick relative you need to care for then I would say family comes first and you should do it. Any reason other than that is not good enough. I spent years in Florida looking for a decent job. Well I found one, but it was not in the Sunshine State. I had to go to Georgia to get anything decent. There is no business infrastructure in the state of Florida and the economy is totally dependent on tourism and retirees, both of which are declining. Retirees can no longer afford to live in Florida and are opting for other regions in the country. Tourism is down now and going lower due to the issues in the Gulf. Please save yourself the time and effort. I hope this helps.

Hey Monita! I lived in S.FLA for 16 years,it was fun but very crowded!!! and expensive. I miss the ocean and close friends but that's it, I have a house in NC me and the family love it, people actually say hello and how are you, and don't cut you off to much!!! it's funny people complain about 10-15 minutes of traffic in NC, in Miami it would take 2 hours during rush hours, when normally should be 20 minutes!!! good to hear from you, stay safe, hope your husband fairs okay in the PAR, I read the memo yesterday.

We recently relocated to the orlando area. Where we came
from (up North) was so expensive that we chose Florida
simply because the cost to live here was less expensive..
To give you an example, our mortgage in NJ was 2K a month..
Internet/Phone/Cable bill was $173 a month. Car insurance
with no accidents, no violations, and no lapse in coverage
was $2080 a year for 2 cars. On average, the electric
bill for the month was $300 and in the summer $700. Now,
let's go over what it is here in Florida.. Electric bill
is $130 a month, Car insurance is $800 a year, and the
monthly rent that includes, phone, cable and internet is $1095.

The job scenario here is just the same as it was up North.
The Jobs up North dont pay very high wages unless you have
some type of degree.. but even those with a degree are having
a difficult time finding employment. So, for the comment about
unless you have a 'reason' to be in Florida, such as a sick relative, no other reason is good enough.. I have to disagree.
Given the cost just for shelter alone is reason enough.

Eric with no Job in Orlando, Florida

I've been in Orlando since May, I've been online and out in the area looking for jobs every day since then and all I found was a seasonal position at a retail store that ended yesterday. And that barely allowed me to make ends meet. I've filled out countless applications, gone on interviews, but never hear back from anything. I can't find a place to hire me anywhere. The excuses I've heard from employers are that I'm either over qualified, under qualified, not a girl, don't have a Florida license, or because I don't speak Spanish. I have a bachelor's degree in Management, moved here from Connecticut and am close to moving back. I've gotten job offers to go back but am trying to make things work here.

I left Florida/Pinellas County, approx. a year ago after being unemployed for 6 months. I have a BS degree, but was being offered $10 or $12 an hour max. Not sure who could survive as a single person on that hourly wage. I had to resort to a "Food Card" to obtain the pricey groceries there. I miss lots of things about Florida, but found employment that I could at least survive on here, while riding out the recession. It was quite a relief to be able to lose the Food Card and have gas in my vehicle again!

I moved here a year ago from New Jersey (worked in New York City) and it is one of those things I wish I had not done.

Good luck!

I live in florida and work as a CNA in home health for $9 a hour.My rent is $700 for a 1bd plus bills.Florida has always been low pay and high rents. In the end it will be mexican workers for min wage and they live 5-10 people in one apt to save money. The rich will have their cheap servants and the rest of us will move back up north.Min wage must be pushed up to $10 a hour for a livable wage and rents pushed down to $400 for a 1 bd and a $100 extra per each added bedroom. In Toronto,Canada people pay $1,000 for a 1 bd.Up to 4 people live together.

I am moving to minneapolis this summer.I currently live in florida working as a CNA/Home Health for $9 a hour. The same company in MN pays $11 a hour.I hate cold weather, but the people in MN are more honest, stable and down to earth.People in florida are something you would see on Jerry Springer. The losers move here because it is warm enough to sleep outside and drugs are everywhere.Homeless and Getto have become the key words to discribe florida. It is a nice place to visit if you stay in beach resorts or Disney, but a terrible place to live.Low pay,High rents, crazy people, high crime.I have been here for 20 years and it is time to get out! Looks like we will have a busy hurricane season this year. What can you tell me about Minneapolis?

Well All I can tell you is that the same mexicans, sudamericans and central american are here working for peanuts and living 5 in an apartment. A decent apartment in Hudson County, NJ cost 1,200 and if you want to live outside the ghetto be ready to pay twice for rent.
At least you don't deal with the horrible winter here.
