Lawyers don't always give the best advice. Forgive the lawyer and people who sent him away, so you all can move on. I'm so sorry your guy had to go to prison for NOT doing the crime. I have a frind whose son never committed a crime except to join a gang from not having a dad around and a mother whose faith was NOT really what it should have been, but no one can tell her different. He had a gun on him for protection...a dumb idea that automatically is a 5 yr. sentence. At age 19 his friends in the car he was a passenger in stopped at a gas station and took his gun without his knowledge to kill the convenience clerk. Eddie is doing 20 years! GOD forgives your man, though certain people in society won't. Go for that restaurant business. Maybe he can hire felons someday who didn't deserve to be labeled or spend so much doing time. Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding. MANY previous convicts have been set free by Jesus, hooked up as a volunteer with a homeless ministry cooking food, attended school for that career, worked low wage restaurant jobs, learned from their churches and that ministry how to run a food business, and they showed him how he could get grants (free money one doesn't have to pay back) to have their own business. EVERYTHING happens for a reason. Tell your guy to turn his SCARS into STARS. Keep being his cheer leader and moral support. He needs to know those who care about him support and love him unconditionally. Stay away from those who don't. Find a church that does the same with outreaches to the downcast and/or homeless ministries. Show him he CAN overcome, and go find those resources for him. He needs that HOPE. Tell him God forgives him. NOW he needs to forgive himself and KEEP moving on. HE CAN DO THIS! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH! |

i agree the answer is God once you can fogive those who wronged you you fell goood. Best way to do it which is what i did is to start your own business. relying on this world will just give you a headache and make you angry. start with think and grow rich by napolean hill. then give yourseld to Jesus and let him lead the way, faith is this is the only thing that helped me. You will feel the forgiveness flow through your body and the graces will open up doorways. This world is driven by hatred, envy and greed. Get a positive business start off very small. read! |

underthemansthumb in Bourbonnais, Illinois said: felonies cannot be expunged in illinois. we can at least vote, not like florida. being upfront just closes the door. as mike stated, it is a life sentence. there is no such thing as dues having been paid. new laws in illinois are pushing for more background checks. carnival workers in illinois now have to go through the background check. and while most people don't care what happens to people in prison or when they get out, several things happen. first a huge change of heart when it happens to someone in their house or family. two, prison sure creates a lot of monsters. three, no work or job, big surprise they turn to crime to eat, and back to jail. can't have most business's due to background check. can't do work for any government like driving a tow truck. can't own a tavern, can't run for any local office can't participate in the pursuit of happiness. can't be a notary public. can't pass background for plumbers, cable tv repair, hell, can't even hardly mow grass. SO, all you tree hugging, liberal minded, democrat voting, hypocritical hand wringing do gooders need to stop blowing smoke up our keester, it's all lies!!!!! what will happen when you folks push someone so far that they feel they have nothing to lose? I have to say that having a felony is a totally different world. Ten years ago when I wanted to look for a new job I could land one in about a week. I have a friend who is a slow learner. He grew up with my brother that was a slow learner as well but died of cancer 17 years ago. He does factory work basically but about every year or two he may get laid off and boom. A couple days later he has a job. I go where everyone tells me that is hiring and leave a resume and application. I hardly ever get any calls. But I will say one thing about job hunting. I have found there are two possible places that are good leads for employment. Most motels looking for clerks or auditors, then pizza deliverin |

It is sad that people can be so dogmatic and judgemental because they haven't been there or done that. The person here who has turned off people from most forums for a very long time knows who they are as well as those who see who receives the most "no" votes. In this subject it's about felons. If they're truly repentent,
Life has all kinds of unfairness. I never look down on people for the grace of God go I. I'd tell that person to keep it to themselves and get work with a ministry or felon aid group to build themselves back up. My "crime" isn't being able to pay my living expenses after serious family illness, job loss after 30 years with younger people hired for less, lost my credit and FICO score the next 7-9 years, can only get a $10 an hour job in restaurants, no health care or food stamps or housing voucher for my family though I paid taxes since my first job age 9, 2 college degrees, credentials for management, many courses in my field for my licenses, fantastic references, and so much more to my favor. BUT I won't have a house for my family, no low credit financing because of the family illness and job loss, and have the stigma of being a dead beat. So, hold your heads high! |

Felons all deserve a second chance. Parole officers are not there to babysit you or find you a job BUT to put you away if you mess up. Family, postive friends and churches are your best help. Life goes on but it will be hard for every door that closes in your face is another slap in the face but keep trying for when you quit YOU give up. So change your looks if you have to and hold your head up and smile no matter what they tell you for that smile is what will get you that job. My son was a felon and even with family it is hard. He has changed the friends he once had and now is trying so hard to get a job but without a car it is hard and he can't afford a car without a job. Anyone know where there is a CHEAP car? Good luck to you all and hold that head up don't let no one take that away. Sandy |

Believe it or not, but when a family member really wanted to work, 3 cars broke down, couldn't afford to fix them, he worked various hours in a restaurant for $8-10 an hour, walked to work, & walked in areas with strip clubs & crime to get to his apartment. That was until a church he's beeen going to did NOT give him a car (good people but "needed" their 3-5 vehicles for their family!!)Someone who was part of that small church's outreach ministries gave him 1 this weekend. He walked in all kinds of weather 7 months. There are ministries that give cars to those who can afford insurance, pay for license and taxes, BUT work. The person I talked about got help to pay for those costs ($300). If YOU wait on the car to get the job, it MAY NEVER happen. It's so sad people are so caught up in their own bling-bling, interests, & pleasures they believe they EARN their way to get what they have & others do, too. Most of those people have family, or they had a family death which placed them in a house and/or with their loved ones in very nice cars. Check with your local ministries (some times big churches) to see what they know about cars for work. The Salvation Army, Good Will, or a place that feeds the homeless would know. Many people donate their cars to the Kidney Foundation, Good Will, & other non-profits to get a tax break; the agencies sell them for patients needs. A friend from the same church hasn't had a car in a couple of years doing what he could to get to his job. He just got a free car today! Someone told him their neighbor was going to take their car to a non-profit. He went & asked them if they would consider giving it to him. Because he HAD a job needing a way to get there, he got it free! Have hope, pray, & ask God to show you. I gave you some ideas here. Others can, too. It never hurts to ask, BUT if the job is there already, they'd give a car. You may hate the job & work, but a car can get you a better job in time. |

Hi friends, I have spent about 2 hours reading posts on here and I have to say that I am shocked how nobody can be entitled to a second chance. I was 17 and just out of High School when I was arrested for Felony Theft. I took a jacket from a next door neighbors car in Westfield, IN. Why did I do it? I guess I was a thrill seeker, that rush you get when you do something bad. Its like being a little kid and and raising hell to your parents for the thrill of it. I am in no way trying to justify what I did, or am I trying to make light of my crime. This was my first offense and I was slapped with a Felony. I was young and afraid of spending serious time in jail so I took a plea bargain. Since then I haven't had any trouble finding work till now. It seems since losing my job on 12/01/07 I have had no luck finding work what-so-ever. I am a college graduate with a 2 year degree in Graphic Design. The jobs I have been applying for are jobs like Wendy's, Wal-Mart, Applebees, things like that. I gotta say between 17 and now I never checked off that I was convicted of a Felony, I always lied and got away with it. But with this Freedom of Information Act I can't find anything everyone runs background checks and with a Felony theft conviction I am looked at as untrustworthy. So my moral dilemma is A- should I try to find work without checking the felony box or B- should I be honest and finally have the peace of mind that the truth is set on the table and me and my employer are all on the same page? If I lie isn't that just as dishonest as committing a theft crime? Thats just my inner struggle for the record I will continue to check the felony box with a yes. Other posts I have read have really upset me. People that are such law-abiding citizens should realize that according to the law of Double Jeopardy, one cannot be tried for the same crime twice. Remembering this once a person has served their jail-time, probation, counseling whatever the courts have deemed acceptable that |
|
Andrew in New Lenox, Illinois 4 months ago |
person should not be tried again for the same crime. If a person cannot enjoy the freedoms of this country as equally as everyone else after he or she has committed a crime. Then why should that person even be let out of prison in the first place? Prison is designed to take away your freedoms, and thats exactly what it does. American society is designed to give its people complete and uninterrupted freedom. However right now, people who are living in society with a felony on their record feel like the line between prison and society is fading. We have to look at each other as equals and we (ex-felons and law-abiding citizens) must realize that when that line between prison and society fades, we as citizens of this country will not be able to distinguish which is which. We have to do whats right, we have to regulate what employers can see on criminal records according to the jobs for which a potential employee is applying for. We also have to stop this discrimination against people that have already paid their depts to society. |

The stigma will never go away,so you have to find a path that does not involve disclosing your background,,I can tell you however that most well paying careers will be closed to convicted felon forever unfortunately...A friend of mine found great success by working for 10 years to start his own business, now he feels the need to go in a new direction and move to a new city, but have found great resistance in his new career path, yet he remains positive and optimistic evn though it seems highly unlikey that he will ever get the position that he is seeking working for the federal government...there should be legislation to clear someones record after they have repaid their debt to society no matter what they did.what i can tell you however is that A very good friend was convicted of a class a felony 9 years ago, today he a lawyer at a very good firm and pulls in well over 160k per year, after law school he found for 3 years to get by the Bar when the initially rejected him on moral turpitude grounds... Good luck to everyone, but to the original poster if you man was not charged as an adult when he was 15 then he has a good chance to have his record sealed and only the government will be able to see it on background checks. |

My son is 25 and last year released from prison. The thing is there is no help for the people that have no place to go. There is no housing, hardly any jobs for the educated let alone someone with a record. He has put in Mc Donalds and they have not even called him. It was hard for him at firest because he wasn't ready after being locked up from society to go out . So many things he has never experienced so many things to learn. Now he has no place to live because I have a husband that is an only spolied child and can't understand what it is like to have no one and no place to go. He gave my son a year to geta place and job and that didn't happen so he was kicked out and now I am stuck not knowing what to do. I can leave my husband but then where do I go and how will I be able to help my son at all? Anyone out there willing to give a place to live or a place to learn a trade? What can be done other than going back to crime since it is at this time going to be his only option. Help ...anyone. Thanks Sandy |

I so agree with you the reason behind prison is to pay your debt for your crime and once you serve your time that should be it. The reason we are are war is because we asa nation are divided. It should be United We Stand NOT dived we fall. We are a forked tongue country. We say one thing ..prison is to pay for your crime and reabilitate but that is not true. I spoke with a correction officer and he told me that it is worse in prison crime wise because if its out on the streets it is for sure going on in prison where you are locked up and no chnace of getting away so you learn to hussle and everything else to get thru your time.. People need help once they get out of prison..a place to live and a job. The need to re-learn the new things that have gone on since they were locked away. I hurt for the people that have been locked up for they don't have a chance unless they have help on the outside. My son has no one but me and now not really that since my husband has said out. A year to him should be enough to of gotten a job and aplace os his own to live. My son went thru hell from his birth dada as so did I and no one understands that my son put himself at my bedroom door each night to make sure I lived thru the night. Now he needs help but the only way I can help now is to stay where I can help him some..money wise. My husband now does not see or understand it all for as an only child he has had the support of family and a learnt trade from his dad and the help should he need it has always been there. Anyone know how to help? Thanks Sandy |

I so agree you said it all!We as adults try to raise our children right from wrong and as a child you mess up we do time out, spanking etc and then all is forgiven and we go on but society....NO ONe is PERFECT<NO ONE. Everyone has made a mistake and regretted it maybe not caught or if did maybe only a slap on the hand but the thing is PRISON is to pay your debt to society and that should be it over and done with. What is wrong with us as a counrty as a person that we can not erase that debt that was paid. The only thing left for some of these felons is to go back to crime what else is there? I as a Mom has messed up and regret it but I have tried to do what is right as I have walked in my own shoes but should I pay for those mistakes the rest of my life. NO EVERYONE DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE!!!! |

DO NOT GO TO onlinejobstoday.org as it's a SCAM wanting YOU to PAY them $20 just for information on jobs that are too good to be true online and is really a list of places where YOU have to try to find a job from their information they sent you. If you already replied and charged $20 for this, I hope it was a credit card you used. They are hoping you use cash to rob your bank account and make you pay bounce fees and charges as they take YOUR money! THERE is NO recourse here! If you charged $20 on your CHARGE CARDS for this SCAM of internet jobs, mystery shopping, or other such jobs they advertised in their information page, write or call your credit card company telling them you were accidentally taken in by a scam and scammer! THEY will FIGHT for YOU as YOU ARE their CUSTOMER! It took me 6 months to get out of their constant charging as well as their associate companies costing me over $600 for a free deal-just paying for information or shipping/handling charges!!! My charge card company WORKED for ME!!! ALL charges WERE dropped. The poor people who just used a bank account to sending a check were most unfortunate. These companies got their companies involved, they charged these people fees on their bank account, took all their money, banks added fees for bounced checks and late fees, and they lost from $1000-$5000 they HAD to pay the bank for! NEVER DO ANY TRANSACTION WITH CASH, MONEY ORDER, OR CHECK! ALWAYS USE A CHARGE CARD as they WILL fight for YOU and get the charges removed. Your charge card company is there to help YOU not be taken by scammers or real felons doing this from their jail house quarters who never will leave their hard time crime life!! PLEASE, PLEASE pass this on to your friends, bloggers, & forum friends. Tell the monitor guide who is Audrey here about these internet sites on the "Felon Forums" here & NOT a guy who claims to be the "monitor" or "guide." TALK TO AUDREY ONLY!!! She will check them out & stop this. Best wishes

PRESTON MOORE:
PEOPLE, DON'T FALL FOR ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES YOUR MONEY! There are many folks out there who are trying to get people to sell real estate making BIG money (you all KNOW the sub-prime market and foresclosures that happened and 7 million more until 2012 will lose their homes), diet plans that claim to cure your illnesses or prevent cancer and other serious diseases, and selling things for your home or to others to get "toxins" out of their households. Their home demonstrations are VERY impressive as they talk to you in person (if you get even that). If you say not now or call some other time, they torture YOU with incessant phone calls. They'll do anything to make their products "do the job" and use shock factor to BUY their products and have you sell it to others. By the time they get done with you, they have you deeply in debt to these products. IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS!!! These are just like informercials on late night tv. You ever wander why they basically have the same price like $19.99 or 29.99, money back guarantees, add an extra one for free, add other free things (bonus gifts) to make it seem like you are getting so much for so little imvestment?!! These people on tv ARE actors! If you ever watch 20/20 or other investigative reports, they'll tell you what these people do. One such case had a REAL doctor talking about how a product actually does do what it says cosmetically. This female doctor WAS paid, never tried the product, and never gave it to her patients; she was caught by 20/20! She did NOT know if the product worked! THEY tell YOU what YOU want to hear! They claim it's sooo easy to use or do. PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE AND NOT BE TAKEN IN!

SANDY HITE: Your son IS your son. You bore him, carried him 9 months, took care of him when he was sick & well, & raised him the best you could. People make mistakes. God forgives even if others don't AND don't WANT to. YOUR HUSBAND IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!! I know this places you in the middle. I'd not even bring it up to your husband anymore. Your son NEEDS you! Your husband DOESN'T! He can go elsewhere! KICK THE FREELOADER HUSBAND OUT! If you don't help your son, what's left? Jail, again?! That's NOT an option, here. Go to whatever agency you can find to help your son. Write your congressmen an senators to give you advice. DON'T GIVE UP! You have read about places here to help ex-felons. Check those sites out. Your son doesn't need his mother to stop caring along with everyone else. Those who think you shouldn't help him, DON'T even bring up his name to them! They are NOT out to help you or him. If it means giving up family members or relataives or friends over saving your son, then so be it! Once someone is incarcerated, they have that mindset built in them to GO back where they don't have to fight to make it on the outside. That is the hardest for them to fight. Depression and anger sets in, so they don't fight to get a job. THIS HUSBAND UNDERMINDED YOUR SON! YOUR son stayed by YOU when that first loser husband abused you (& your son experienced that, too!). This 2nd husband IS a loser, also, I am sorry to have to tell you that. Get up the courage & end this part of your life of many years of abusive husbands! RISE UP & KICK HIM OUT!

We are people too, treat us so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your adding that last part which sounds like a comparative justification tells me you still don't get it. Just the fact that you used that card, tells me you are still rationalizing the facts. It was a FELONY dude! Not a traffic ticket, not a misdemeanor. You broke a major law. Employers aren't going to take the chances of hiring felons. The liability is just too much. You need to consider starting your own business. I've met a few people who are felons, who went out on their own with a skill or talent and did well. They inform people of their history before doing business. Get ahold of your PO, have them look into your options for small business start up. They may have programs in your state. Other than that, I'd suggest you drop all that 'justification crap' about how everyone else does it and you just got caught. All you are telling people (implied) is that you still do it. |

I did not know those guys were all felons. Tell me what felony (just for example) was Dr. King convicted of please? Lawyer2Be: You need to study your history; one of main tenants of your future law coursework. You are generalizing; a very poor argument. (You also need some philosophy and debate coursework.) Dr. King was arrested and jailed. The part you are leaving out is that he wasn't found swimming with a drunken juvenile naked. Dr. King had quite a different agenda and was jailed for acts of civil disobedience. He also spent that time in jail writing some of his greatest works. I whole heartedly doubt we are seeing any socially redemptive acts on the part of the felon who started this thread. Now, if he had spent his time in prison getting a degree or advanced degree (maybe a JD), he would have something to leverage. Instead, he is not moving his case forward. He wants others to do it for him. Not going to work. Therein lies the difference.

To "Doesn't Matter" In reply to your post above which stated "I would starve to death before I would steal food. That is what takes strength." If a person is hungry or thirsty...all of his energies turn toward remedying these deficiencies, and other needs remain inactive. Abraham Maslow stated "Anyone who attempts to make an emergency picture into a typical one, and who will measure all of man's goals and desires by his behavior during extreme physiological deprivation, is certainly blind to many things. It is quite true that man lives by bread alone â when there is no bread". Obviously you have never been deprived of food for any length of time -- for a human to survive, the physiological need to eat could easily drive someone to steal food, if it were unavailable to him. Having a physiological motive to obtain food, even through theft, if hungry enough, I doubt there are few people on earth who'd rather starve than to obtain food to survive. |

I agree..Do not cast stones unless you have been put in that situation. If you are truly hunry and straving insint takes over and steal or go hungry..most would steal. You can not be human if you can not understand hunger and what you would do to survive. Sandy |

So you made your mistake and you paid for it,now look forward not back, find out if it can be expunged and pay to have it done.If you are truly a good person that made a mistake then it will not stop you from having a successful life...if you have it expunged you are golden...Crimes of a sexual nature are tough as even though it is something minor everyone percieves you as a danger...I am 34 years old, 16 years ago i lived in a mostly white town and was attacked by 6 skin heads while on my way to a shooting range,i defended my self beat two of them badly,I was alone and had no help yet they charged me with many felonies and made me out as the agressor, all white town, all white old jury i was saddled with a felony a few days before i was to leave for basic training in the Air Force...Fast forward I have never had the Felony expunged yet have been extremely successful,I own 2 homes,a bunch of classic cars and along with my wife vacation all over the world. As for they guys/girls that attacked me all but 1 are bums on drugs...I don't so much as spit in public....A good education is key you need a skill that is in demand and when you have a felony conviction you need about 2-3 skills or excellent knowledge/education in a few areas to stay always working......I am a certified master Mercedes Benz Technician/NCCCO Tower crane operator/Have every commercial driver license available and can drive and repair just about any Gasoline/Diesel powered Rig/tractor/dirt equipment etc/I have a small online Business/Excellent interior remodeling skills and am in the process of getting my GC as well/do freelance writing and have sold a few articles on a variety of subjects....stop whining after you have knocked on 1000 doors and everyone has turned you down knock on 1000 more and never give in to working a warehouse job if you have skills beyond what any idiot can do.... |

Some People have a Felony but never went to prison as the so called crime in my case any way should have been attached to the people that attacked me.But Felony convictions are not to protect society from criminals they are to protect the lifestyles of the politicians,Judges,Law enforcement etc..I basically got and Felony and went home, but according to statistics I should be back in prison within 5 years, but 16 years later they are still waiting for me and the FBI has a 6 digit number ready already and a rubber stamp to start dishing out funds to keep me locked away at over 65k per year when they could just give the 65k to an institution of higher learning earmarked for my use in pursuing a degree and career that will keep me out of prison until I die....but instead every time a horrible crime happens the people that house prisoners get excited as they can request more funding to house the dangerous individual than they did the year before...China has 1 billion people 1.5 million are in prison,,United States has 300 million people with 2.2 million in prison/jail...you are safer in 90% of the united states than 60% of china yet we have more people in jail...

are effected with many commiting suicide as they realize 25 years of loyalty and hard work payed well to the thiefs and they have no where to turn...these criminals get a few years in prison for ruining thousands of lives, but we spend so much for a guy that killed one person....This America is a thing of the past a fossil and us convicted felons should stick together and carve out a successful and legal enterprise realigning Felons into society and many companies that would rather hire foreigners as they are better educated might consider us....Forget about the Felony that is Past...and for the guy talking about Illinois if it is so bad and you can't even be a circus clown, hide under the bus and leave town when the circus does and get to somewhere that you can work,,instead of talking about how bad it is find somewhere that is good and get you act together to get there...Negativity brings more of the same you should know that by now....

In case you are wondering who an ex-offenders is, We are all ex-offenders. Some of us have not been caught.
In case anyone disagrees, as many "better than" self-righteous and judgmental people here seem to do, it is a felony to not hire someone and discriminate against them solely on the basis of a criminal record. So to those who work for companies or claim that corporations should not trust an ex-offender and hire him- guess what -> you are encouraging companies to discriminate and break the precious penal code and to commit a felony. This is a federal law.

I understand that you may have been an attorney or judge in your time, but by no means do you know the law and how it may pertain to an individual in each and every state. If arrested in Georgia for a summary offense of spitting in someones face, then you move to Pennsylvania, you must disclose that information to future employers, because it is considered a felony 3. Everyone has broken a law in there life, no one is beyond this. Wether a misdermeanor or felony. So, with this in mind no one should have a job. Luckly, for the few who were not caught they can get a job. Think beyond your area before you try to give a piece of wisdom based off a piece of experience. Wisdom does not come with age, It comes from experience and the ability to use it wisely. A ninety year old hermit who lived in the woods his whole life, does he really wisdom? |

Thank you for taking time to warn others about the poster you mention above. He has upset a lot of people. It is best we all ignore him, as none of his comments are positive or helpful to others. |

Have you tried your local unemployment office? Sometimes they have counselors on staff specifically to help people in your shoes. They will have lists of companies that will give ex-cons a job.

I'm currently on Probation and paying restitution for a damaged lap top. My Probation is coming to an end soon, but I may not be done paying my restitution. I plan on continuing making payments for my restitution. Does anyone know if my Probation will continue if I haven't paid off my restitution all the way? |

This was all so interesting to me. I am in the middle of helping someone whom was released from prison in Oct 07, they have spent over 18 years behind bars/ half their life. (arrested @ 22) given 35 years for robbing a drug dealer. they have truly served their time and although they rec an assoicates degree in arts while there that will do NOTHING for them here. they are thank God working at a Burger King but how does someone like that ever, ever really get back into society. Whatever skills they may have picked up while locked up are over powered by technology and other technical chages of our society in the last 19 years.
