Only choose Psychology if you plan to follow it all
the way out and get a PhD or Psy D.

In order to succeed in Psych you must have a Doctorate.

Also most employers don't care about minors.
That's more so a college thing.

LOL! Unless you are going to go for a PhD, Psychology on a resume becomes someone's grocery list.

Have to join in with the rest of the peanut gallery. Psychology and Journalism are two of the most worthless degrees you can get. lol!

You might want to pick up a book called "Do What You Are" by Paul Tiegler. Any library would have this.

If you are going to do what you love, in this job market, you better make sure its something an employer will love as well.

Do not bother going to school if you will study Pysch and journalism. With twitter, FB and blogging journalism will continue to erode. Pyschology to most employers seems like a hobby more than a major. Either get a trade like an electrician or study Science, Engineering, technology or math.

My bit of advice would be the following...

1) It is certainly one thing to minor in something... but I wouldn't major in Psychology by itself. I actually know a couple of people who have been out of school for over a year now and still can't find a decent paying job with that major. It is VERY specified, and there typically aren't many jobs that want it by itself (as NorthOfTheD stated, it may be good to pair with Marketing or something else though).

2) Regardless of what major you pick... take internships. And then take more internships. And then maybe another internship, too. This is one of the mistakes I made while in college. I at least did 1 internship while I was still in school, but I wish I could go back and do at least 2 more. I know kids who have graduated (without ever doing an internship) and are struggling to find jobs. Typically, those who have multiple internships are more likely to land a job.

If you have any interest in business, especially Marketing, you may find a good fit. Consider researching what will be necessary for a BS in Marketing / business administration. Yes, you will probably be required to take basic calculus and advanced statistics, but as long as you can survive and pass those classes, you'll be fine. You won't use most of the math you learn anyway, especially in Calc I. So, don't let that intimidate you if you hate math.

I can't speak for your area specifically, but I can tell you what I'm seeing here in Michigan. There are quite a few paid internships and entry-level marketing jobs that become available each month, and many of them list psychology and journalism as additional degree considerations. If you have a marketing degree and the company prefers to hire a candidate with some kind of specific concentration or experience with writing or consumer behavior, a minor in psychology or journalism can definitely make you stand out.

If the idea of a marketing career makes you gag, obviously this is a terrible fit. But if the interest is there and you want to pursue psychology, it pairs well with marketing. I have a college friend who essentially graduated with a BS in marketing and a minor in psychology and he landed a job that pays over $50K. I believe his 1-2 years of experience gave him the edge, so remember to keep your eyes open for internships or other means of gaining experience if you pursue this or a similar route.

Congratulations! You just picked the two most useless degrees to graduate with. There is a swarm of Psych and Journalism students currently either unemployed or underemployed, because a whole generation of college students were told that they had to go to college but they didn't have to take math class, so naturally a liberal arts degree is what most of us chose.

If you go back, I would go back for something OTHER than those two. A healthcare profession, perhaps. Or engineering, if you're any good at math. But those two majors....USELESS. All you'll be is 4 years later and even further in debt, unless you meet someone important along the way who takes you on.

I kind of feel as though my life is at a stand still.. but only because I'm uncertain of what I should do next.

Okay so here's a little background info on me; I graduated high school '09, took a year off to get me a little job and only came across a couple of seasonal positions. Summer 2010 I began Cosmetology school where I went for approximately 1 year before getting dropped because of my attendance(I honestly wasn't happy nor interested there). From Summer 2011 til today as I type, I've been looking for work, and haven't really found anything except another seasonal job as well as a commission based job, which is fasho not for me !

I'm now 20 going on 21, in debt, still living with my mama & no clear sense of what I wanna pursue a career in. I do know that i want an education/career & not just a job. I mean no, I'm not in the worst position but I definitely could be in a better one.

Im thinking about going to a JC for 2 years, getting my AA & then transferring to a University to Major in PSYCHOLOGY & Minor in JOURNALISM.

I just dont wanna start something & not finish. Also Im not 100% sure that I want to study those courses. ANY ADVICE ON WAYS TO FIND OUT WHAT ONE TRULY WANTS TO STUDY & TURN INTO A CAREER.

ALL SERIOUS ADVICE IS APPRECIATED YOU GUYS. THNX!
