Hi, I could really use some help with this decision. I currently work for a large mutual fund company and enjoy the company and the people there. The problem is the company is very far from my home (28 miles) and it's not in my field of study (I have a dgree in computer science). I was recently offered a job much closer to home that will put me back in my field, this job will also pay me slightly more.

The sticking point is that I've become fairly comfortable at my current place of work and I'd be moving from a very large company to a fairly small one where I would be the only IT guy, which is a lot of pressure in of itself. I'm torn over this decidion and have to make one soon. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Hi Mike

I feel your pain. I live 43 miles from my job and want to make a change but am afraid to take the plunge as I don't have a degree. I think I would try and picture yourself in the new job a few months down the road. Taking any new job is a scary proposition but if you have the skills for the new job and it is closer to home, gas prices being what they are, I would go for it.
Just my opinion, Good luck to you

I agree with Bryan. Perhaps the stress you may be taking on at the new position will be offset by the shorter commute (that can be really stressful). I am not one to suggest making a career decision based on salary, it so often just isn't worth it. However, I can imagine that working in your desired field, getting a slightly larger salary and, most importantly, gaining an extra hour a day (or so) would be worth it.

Best of luck to you!
