Yay or Nay. And why or why not. Certainly want to do all you can to at least get an interview..but are they even looked at anymore?
Lately I've been wondering if I am wasting my time? |

I submit one for every job that asks for a resume and isn't an online application. I've written hundreds of them. Do they get read? I have no idea. Do I get calls? Less than five percent of the time, yes. |

I include one with every application. That being said, I've been unemployed/underemployed for 2.5 years now, and neither of the menial jobs that I actually got hired for required them (actually really, they only required a pulse and the ability to lift boxes). |

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It seems like I've had better success when I do it. I'm a fast writer and willing to take random creative chances so maybe it helps me to stand out if someone is actually reading the resumes. Something off of indeed, a corporate site or headhunter I don't bother. On the other hand, with craigslist, where there is usually a person on the other end, I think it helps. |

Always. But it's not landed me a job. |

A cover letter IS IMPORTANT but it's your application that gets you noticed for large companies. These days most HRIS systems first look at the internal application you need to complete. Make sure you don't omit any fields no matter how long and tedious it is to complete. If you have certain keywords, don't have too many gaps in employment and whatever other filters they put on their database queries then your actual resume will be reviewed. If it is promising they will then look at your cover letter. A cover letter can make the difference I know this for a fact, but it is only part of the job application process. |

That's sort of the reason why I submit a cover letter for every job to which I apply, investor guy. I don't bother with large companies because with a gap showing on an application I have no chance. Frankly, I don't think I have any chance to get any job anywhere because of this gap. |

Some employers state that they want a cover letter, so you can put your salary requirements in there and weed you out. |

Yes...especially detest the salary requirement "request." Which......we all know that it isn't a "request" at all. My favorite cover letters of all time to compose! (sarcasm) |

I have submitted many an app where there is no place for a cover letter anymore. Maybe its just me but I think this is going the way of the telephone booth unless you are applying to something on Craigslist. |

Almost all of the places I've ever applied to have had a spot for a cover letter, and they've all been online. Some have it as an "optional" piece, but I've never considered it really optional. |

You can go to my library and buy a Killer Resume/Cover Letter book off their discard pile for a buck now. Why is that? |

You can copy and paste from cover letters you find online. lol I keep my cover letter (body of the email, really) very short. I think it's about 6 sentences long. No one has time to read a novel anymore. Get to the point. |
