I worked in healthcare settings for 5 1/2 years so I'll chime in.
Medical Asst's that get hired by nice doctors, in nice neighborhoods, typically deal with nice patients.
Conversely, an MA could get stuck and have their disproportionate share of rude, disrespectful folks.
My forecast for medical assistant: the jobs will increase here in the US. Two reasons why I believe this--
1) first, the folks who had been using ER waiting rooms for non-emergency purposes will soon be filling up physician waiting rooms.
2) medical assistants serving abusive entitlement populations will burn out and leave the profession faster than you can say "supplemental nutrition assistance program."
If someone considering this field has thick skin, then I say go for it.
