I have been in some sort of sales for the past 4 years, ever since graduating from school. I like the freedom and not being tied to a desk but I cannot stand the cold calling. Can someone please help me. I need a change but do not know what my options are. I like dealing with people and helping them. I like being outside of the typical office environment. I would like to make decent money but don't have to pull in hundreds of thousands. Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be a good fit. I just want to move on from these jobs and start my career. |

Thanks for your Thoughts Charlie. My degree is in Communications. So that does not really narrow things down too much. Someone mentioned being an insurance claims adjuster to me. I have worked in insurance and did enjoy that. But have applied to a few and been denied. I may take a look at a PR job. |

TO START YOUR TERRITORY YOU WILL HAVE TO COLD CALL AND THEN AS YOU DEVELOP IT, THE COLD CALLING WILL DECREASE |

That is an interesting thought. I am a female, but still an interesting thought. Also, D Sales, I am aware that you "have to" cold call in the beginning but i just can't do it for a product that I am not excited about. That is why I said I think I need a change from sales. However, I also know that there are jobs out there where someone else is responsible for setting appointments and cold calling, as their sole duty. If I am going to continue sales that is the type of job I need. |

Well, Charlie, yes Google is wonderful..to a point. As far as having sales ability, I have smaller than a pinch. I am looking for a distributor to help me, since I am also hitting the streets and could use some help. Its a great energy drink and much better than those "junk" energy drinks you see advertised. They must be crazy to put all that sugar and caffeine in one can ! Anyway, mine is actually good for you. I will not be accused of spam, so I wont put my web site address here. If you would like to know more, you will have to send an email to me. I can tell you what to expect as far as wages go. l c p a n g e l i t a @ yahoo.com is it [take out those spaces !] Make sure you put into your subject line your name or I will not be able to sort you from spam myself. ( ! ) Thanks, |

I also like to help people which is the main reason I chose the massage therapy field. I'm not rich but I make a decent living. I got my education online so I was able to work at my office job and come home and work on my massage training. It was rather inexpensive compared to outside massage schools and I was able to set up a payment plan. Just another option for you to consider!! My training was through www.teachmehowtomassage.com and I got my certificate about 1 1/2 years ago. I have since been very successful at it. |

How can someone teach me how to massage on the internet? I'll have to check this out. I recently got into sales, getting pledges from people who have already given to causes they like. I really find it to my liking. I just wish I had gotten into sales earlier in life. It helps if I have some sort of formula and then I can put things in my own words. Also, it's important for me to pick out something I'm inspired about. How does one work up the ladder in sales to the point where they are bringing in a decent salary? I am already 40+ and wondering if I need to go back to school? |

I like dealing with people and helping them. I like being outside of the typical office environment. My wife is in the same situation as you. Part of the problem with sales jobs that entail a lot of cold-calling is that they tend to have a small base and a large commission percentage, because the employer doesn't really expect you to succeed and so won't invest a lot of money in the position. Here are some ideas that worked for her: Search jobs on the terms "territory sales rep", "account manager" and "company car". The results returned situations where an established company was looking to fill an established territory. Some of those companies sell to home improvement and grocery stores, restaurants or are in B2B sales. B2C sales will always be lower-dollar and more stressful. "Company car" will let you know the companies who are investing in their sales force. Be sure to quantify your results so that they apply to any sales situation. She had her resume done professionally, but you can go to sites like www.career-hunter.info and get the information you need to do most of it yourself. |

I feel your pain OP. I am currently a retail manager, formerly a restaurant manager a single father with no college deggree. I am also late 30's. I would like something more flexible in hours so I can behome in time for my child after school but need to earn mid $60's. I am sort of stuck in a situation with no growth unless I want to move (cant) and obviously the pay will only increase about 4% a year with continued "exceeds expectations" ratings. I am pretty much confused on what to do with myself. |

Wow! I am in the same boat and after reading this blog am hoping for some ideas myself. I have been working in the human services field for the past nine years. I have a Masters in Social Work and am a licensed therapist...blah, blah, blah. I am very much tired of working with high end clients and their very deep problems. The work leaves me with a headache most of the time. I used to love it but i think it is a field which drains the life right out of a person after awhile. I really want to get into a different field but have no idea where to even start. I have manager experience and a great understanding of people and how they work...only I can't therapize myself into a new field. I have no clue where to begin or what fields make sense for me. I love working with people, just over hearing people's problems day after day. PS..For the person that started this blog. Pharmaceutical sales seems to be a lot more along the lines you are searching for! I have a family member in the field and she absolutely loves it. Never mind the benefits of a company car and things like that, but she makes her own schedule is never in an office and does well financially. That is if you want to stay in sales! |

Thanks! When I say "high-end" I am talking about the families with serious mental health concerns. You know the deal, one parent...that does not work, kid has several siblings, different fathers, kid has problems with severe anger, depression, or diagnosis etc..Or victims of all kinds of abuse, foster care situations and welfare recipients. I am tired of that line of work...so tired. I want to do something new and different, not sure how to break into another field or what would make sense. I am wondering if I have to head back to school for a new opportunity. |

Displaced Legal Professional in Denver, Colorado said: Depends on your age. Going back to school may work if you're under forty. Over forty and it has diminishing returns. Would that involve going back and getting a PhD in something? I am 31. I have to say that i would likely enjoy teaching students about working with youth and improving clinical skills, not sure how to get to that place. I have started looking at jumping ship all together and getting a meaningless job waiting tables or something. I really do think I am losing my mind with this work and losing motivation. Yikes! maybe I ought to get my own therapist! Any ideas what other fields would be rewarding and perhaps I could slide in there with my experience as it is? I like working with people, mostly kids, I really enjoy traveling (i know who doesn't) but I mean traveling with a purpose, i have considered things like the Peace Corps but am not excited about a 2 year stint in a place i am not able to choose. I am living in Florida, which could also be part of the issue with finding new work, since there is not much here. I see you are from Denver! That is where I just came from...I miss Capitol Hill! Thanks for your support and ideas it's been helpful |
