What has happened to all the apprentice jobs? In the past to become a blacksmith or a fisherman/sailor or just about any other proffession, all you had to do was go to that person and ask to be an apprentice. If that didn't work you travel tell you find someone who would train you. There are soooo many jobs out there that could benefit from apprentice ship oppertunities. Even advanced jobs like computer repair to mechanics should be apprentice jobs. We should be paid to learn, not pay out the ass to learn. So many people out there that would be or could be good at certain jobs go neglected and forgotten, or never seen just because because they don't have that peice of paper with some college's name on it. Too much faith is put into those peices of paper. I've noticed that just because someone has a degree doesn't make them the ideal employee. They might have the knowledge for the job, but they don't have the aptitude. The only appreticeships right now are for welders, pipefitters, plumbers and electricians; but even those are hard to get. Not just hard to get but the job positions are far and few between right now all over the country.

Employers seem to think that they can just pluck the perfect worker from the degree pool, but there is no such thing. No matter what they do, they still have to train the new emplyee in their ways. They need to realize that the zero or little job experience means that the new employee would be easier to train in the ways of their company.

I know this rant is a little shaky and could be so much more...but I would like to hear what you all think.

Where you been? About 30 years ago, we lost manufacturing and along with it, went the "No Experience Necessary" sigh.

Companies want experience now and they want someone else to have paid for it.

I've already spoken out about why everyone is being pressured to go to college

and asked about the apprenticeship opportunities here

In my experience, getting into a paid apprenticeship is competitive. There's just not enough funds to give e everyone who would like to learn a trade for free. The electrician union in my area is asking new apprentices for a CDL. This was a requirement that was added within the last two years.
. It's unclear how unions decide which applicants they accept into their paid apprenticeships. They administer an aptitude test but don't share the results with the applicants or explain why an applicant was rejected.

Maybe the only reason why blue collar work can pay well is because very few people are allowed to enter the trades every year, legally.Nepotism, I'm told, is prevalent just as as much as in white collar jobs. The only difference is blue collar labor perform tasks and have skills civilization needs to function.

But OTHER than that, a lot of the incentives set by the market economy are messed up. A lot of the soft skill jobs present in our service sectors which require "a college degree" have a negative effect on society. We also have a lot of technically trained people working on apps, video games, and other forms of entertainment instead of solving serious problems. This may have something do with the systemic denial of our serious problems. If you know anything about science or economics, you'll know what I'm talking about.
