I had an initial interview with a company that I would love to work for. The interview went great. The interviewer and I seemed to agree on the same fundamentals for the position and we even shared some laughs. He said I should be coming back for a second interview.

Two weeks later I talk to the recruiter after not hearing anything from the company to try and find out what's going on.

Keep in my this is my first interview and the three others I was competing with have already had their second interview.

So after the recruiter emailed the HR manager asking what the status was he replied:

"According to upper management he is the most interesting person so far, however we are uncertain as of a final decision. We are taking slow but careful steps to ensure we find the most interesting person for the job"

Now I took that as a good sign that they said I was the most interesting candidate, even though I have not attended a second interview so far. Since that email two weeks have gone by and I haven't heard anything yet regarding that position. Today I followed up with the HR manager directly politely asking if there is any updates regarding the vacancy.

So this is four weeks after my initial interview and I'm wondering if I even have a shot anymore. I was expecting to have a second interview already. What do you guys think, has the ship sailed?

I never listen to any of these stories. I give them 30 days and then I move on. I actually have a spreadsheet as to when I interviewed and where my Drop Dead Date is.

You may or may not still have a shot. Why would they go ahead with interviewing others a second time but not you if you were the "most interesting" candidate? And how could you know they interviewed the others a second time?

They know you're still interested. You've indicated such twice since your interview a month ago. I think you pretty much have to let this one go and let the cards fall where they may.

Again, nothing an employer says means anything unless it's a verbal indication that they'd like to hire you or you receive a written offer of employment.

Good luck.

They aren't interested is the impression that I got of them. They probably just said that to get rid of you. Also you say the interview went great, but I doubt that. They probably want someone with more experience or something like that.
