I'm currently working as a consultant and have been approached about converting to a perm employee. I'm curious how to best handle an issue with a previous employer so it isnt a ding against me when they run a more in depth background check for direct hire.

Here is my problem: I worked for a very small company for about 5 years. In fact, it started at as a 3 man company: The owner, his wife and me. The title that I was given at point of hire and kept throughout my employment there, didnt remotely reflect the job I was actually doing there. The title was Sr. Sales/Marketing Representative. I never actually "sold" or "marketed" anything. My role was to support and lead technology projects with their direct client. It would have been better described as an engagement manager or projects lead or project coordinator type of position. To manage this and avoid the constant emails/calls I was getting from recruiters for sales jobs I didnt want of have the experience for, I removed the titeles on my resume. Rather than listing my actual title, I list "role." Should I removed this also to avoid confusion when the background check says my title was something totally different? I definitely dont want it to seem as though I've lied about anything. They were just such a small company and didnt have a "sales staff" so they made me their defacto sales person in title but never in practice. Another reason I'm so worried about this is like many tech companies in the 2003-2004 time frame...this company went belly up. A background screener isnt going to be able to call them directly and ask what I was ACTUAALY doing there. They'll probably just get the dates of emplyment and title from previous W2s.

What do you guys suggest I do? I really want this job and don't want something so stupid to get in my way of me getting it. I'm not even sure if a large company would look that closely at that stuff, but I want to pre-empt.

List the actual title that you held with a slash and then the title that describes your actual role there.

It would be good if you could contact the former owner and brief him on your dilemma and then use him as a reference.

If you are asked whether or not you want a former employer called on, and you put no on the application, do they call them? If so,and they get a negative response about you, will they then call the second and third employer? Very curious.
