Having worked in account management for over 20 years, I'd say the top 3 skills are:

1. Excellent communication skills - you must have the ability to connect instantly with people, build rapport and trust. If you love helping people that's even better! Keeping the client informed of what you've done and are going to do on a regular basis is key.

2. Be well organised - you are dealing with multiple issues, multiple stakeholders and things happen fast. Your client relies on you to get it right first time every time - and quickly! Therefore good organisational skills where you have the ability to stay on top of things, pre-empt situations, think ahead and be prepared.

3. Good sales technique - you are responsible for maintaining and growing business. Without technique, you'll be relying on product and market knowledge etc. which won't get you very far. Invest in sales training. Sandler Institute is one of the best.

true. but being a top acct mgr also depends on the support you get from the various internal depts of the company.

example: if you can sign up a big cust but the cust wants 2 delivery days per wk. And transportation says we can only do 1. see ya, bye-bye, so long to that new cust.

example: if a potential new cust wants 14 day terms but credit mgr says no only 7. guess what see ya, bye-bye, so long.

being a great salesman is like being a great running back. is it the running back's ability only or the offensive line that makes the openings.
