Getting an accounting clerk job.

How did you get your start doing accounting clerk work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

The reson for looking this position is that i have a plan to persue my education in accountiong & if i get related job the experience might help me to build my future carrer

I went to college and took a 3-year Business Admin. program majoring in Accounting. The program has a co-op program. So after my second semester, I was able to find a company who wanted co-op students to work for them. So I worked as an accounting clerk for about 8 months and went back to school again. I'm a graduate now, and I work as an accounting clerk in a very reputable company.

Since your graduation, have you sent out resumes to other companies? Have you tried to advance within the company?

I started off working in Reputable Temporary employment agencies. They offered basic training in computers and accounting. Every short term position that I held gave me more experience in office procedure and basic accounting/payroll skills. For 3 years I kept asking for harder assignments until I landed a permanent job as an accounting clerk. The company offered to pay for more education while I worked for them. That job lasted about 3 years. By this time I was a level 2 accountant. I went back to the Temporary employment agencies for another 4 years. Every assignment I got paid more and had more responsibility then the last. I am now the Financial Manager at a small non profit organization and the company is once again paying for my education.

Recently finished my computerized accounting training to familiarize myself with the most used accounting softwares and its two months now I still don’t have a coop/placement in accounting. Man it’s hard to get coop/volunteer work in accounting for the experience . Any ideas anyone maybe im looking in all the wrong places

where can someone direct me to take computerized training to learn different accounting systems..like lotus or quickbooks. to give myself an advantage as i enter the accounting workfield?

I bascially learned on the job. I did take bookkeeping in high school, many eons ago. I also did some billing, posting and collections here and there but I never aspired to be a Accounting Clerk. I was, and still am, afraid of numbers BUT as fate would have it, or should I say luck? No, fate (smile). Here I am doing the thing I most feared. I started out as a temp doing office/cleridal work. Got hired permanently and had the title Office Assistant III. The job duties increased to more financial obligations. I was then called a Financial Assistant III. The place I work at wanted to be equal with standard market (corporate) titles then I became a Accounting Clerk Intermediate. The next step would be Accounting Clerk Senior. And, of course I seem to have more and more duties as the years go by (6 years now.) As of late, with the economic crises hoovering about, I've been looking into other career fields and lo and behold, they name accounting as one of the top 10 career fields that are likely to have jobs in the future! So, I figure, I'm already in here, why not learn more accounting skills.

I'm planning to take accounting courses at the community college and might even get a certification or a associates degree in it. By me learning on the job, I know how to do accounting "their" way which may not be the industry standard. I need to learn more "high end" accounting terms and procedures. I have very little accounting software experience. I need to learn those also. I am in the same boat as electriclady, doing a bachelor's degree in business administration and an accounting designation and i started working full time while in my 3rd year - no COOP, went out and looked for a job on my own. I started off in the merchandising department as a inventory analyst for a temp job, and lone behold there was an AR specialist opportunity in the accounting department, I applied and was a perfect fit for it! I also learned a lot of accounting from websites like accountingcoach and www.accountingscholar.com

yesss duhh every accounting firms need an educational background and they will not hire a person who does not have an experince nor would they hire a person without a degree. you need to have university level education.

This new year I'm wanting to look for an accounting clerk position I know there are positions where you don't have to have a degree. I worked at a check place for 6 and half years and gained all my experience in bank recinciliations and everything.
