I have been laid off for 11 months today. I worked in accounts payable for 9 years. Have not used e-xcel at all wasn't needed to match and enter invoices, just had to be very accurate. I also worked as the receptionist for 5 years thinking about going back to it because I can't get in the door at accounting jobs. Any suggestions

Find out if your local school district or public library has any free Microsoft Office classes. Your local community college might also have these courses as well.

Jfell: Do you have any other accounting software skills such as Quickbooks? You might want to look into learning other accounting software skills as well.

Good luck to you.

I have been out of work for 2 years now, worked in accounts payable for 12 years, receptionist for a few years and customer service for 20+ years. I have no expereince in excel or word. I have signed up for classes and I hope that helps. One thing I know is something will come through thats what keeps me going. It's been and is rough. Keep your chin up

Excel and Word can be learned at most workforce development centers. Wisconsin's offer free tutorials on these as well as many other programs and skills.

Excel and Word are pretty much essential skills in today's job market. I've been fortunate to have learned the Microsoft Office products at an early age and have been using them for almost 20 years. It has helped me in all my accounts payable and accounting jobs over the years. I've been building on my knowledge of Excel (VLookups and PivotTables) by watching YouTube videos. Lots of FREE tutorials out there online.
