It is important to have natural mechanical aptitude. You can start by taking a job for grounds for an apt community. It should be 10 an hour in our area. Or if you have some mechanical aptitude and know basic maint skills then you can take a job where they say entry level in which hopefully you work alongside another maint member and get trained. Anyone can start out in grounds which means picking up garbage and pet messes, basic tree trimming, raking leaves, keeping area around the dumpsters clean and clear, mowing if they dont have a service although most large properties do, shoveling, etc. For entry level maint they may give a maint skills test to see what level you are at and if you have enough basic skills to be hired and be trainable. Also they will do a drug and background check and thorough one since you will be going in people's apartments and working around kids and people. They may hire a high school student for grounds but they would want a high school graduate for full time work usually. To make more money after entry level skills are gained you can get your pool and spa certification and HVAC to be certified to put freon in ACs etc. These are very easy to get, takes only a few days for each and testing. Often times if your job has educational assistance they will pay for it if you pass if. Could also get your boiler's license and take small appliance and electrical courses at the community college certification course and also could get a certified apt maint technican certification too (usually 10 full day hands on seminars including some online and some book work the same week 800.00).
