well, i tried but they didn't allow me.....because there is a part in the form asking me if I am american citizen or not.
I am not right now but i am on process.
I even don't have green card yet. only I-94 & i just got here 3 months ago.

It is hard to work as a translator or as an enterpreter with a company or agency without having a greencard nor a citizenchip. basicaly there is no way you can have a job without at least a green card .
so if I were you I will contact the US Military and ask if you can be algible to be a linguist soldier without a citizenship or greencard. the Military helps a lot and in your situation, you have to go through processes to get to where you need to be. and the army or any brunch do that for you. they help you get your citizenship, they help you get your secret clearance, and they help you with experience and also you get about 20.000.00 dollars bonus.
so try that out .
Try to joing the army and get what you need to be able to work latter .
because now you have no tools that will allow companies to accept you in their brunches.
So military is the only thing that you will have to do now.

Are you kidding? Here you are capitalizing things that should not even be capitalized, and not using proper punctuation. You have the nerve to point out spelling errors? Give me a break already. If they are applying for a job that is specific to translating documents and they write worse then a kid in elementary school then of course there is a problem. Get over yourself. Maybe I should go get a Masters in English. It seems they are just giving them away these days!

You guys are crazy. It's a FU#C#KEN Linguist forum and the main and sole purpose is to communicate between each other in order to help satisfying each other's interest in seeking for career. Let me kick it to you right quick, it's not an argument forum and it's been designed to help people out not to do the opposite, I mean "COME THE FU*#K ON" I swear Allah everytime I come to this forum site all I find is bad comments about each other spelling and whatnot, why the heck do you have to brag about your degree, education and whatever you have to brag about. Hello everyone.

I would like to kindly take a moment and layout what really SIVs need to do. I am an SIV holder, Upon arriving to the U.S I became a perminant resident. it was hard for me to find a job but here is my story; well, first of all I would like to tell you a few things about me, I have 5 Yrs of linguistic experience and been working with a very high ranking commanders within the U.S Armed Forces in Iraq as an Arabic linguist translating from Arabic to English and vice versa. I've got all what it takes to get a decent job here in the U.S but unfortunately Although I got a degree in computer sciense and with the linguistic experience I have it was defficult to find a job due to the economical situation the United States is going through. However, I know most of us don't like some jobs offered to us because we're not used to that and I understand that. I have the same cocky feeling about the unsufficient jobs being offered to us but I would recommend you to get a job at least to pay your bills with your head up. Best bet to go with is go to school, polish your skills, if you already went to school you may obtain a license in the field you're interested in, get certifications because most of the jobs here are basid not only on experience but also on licenses and certification it's a compination of both and it's like "having a car with fuel in it" would really work out right?. By the time you finish your college degree or you get your license or whatever, time will fly by so fast and eventually you will become a U.S citizen and things will hopefully work out for you. Furthermore, there is a lot of Information Technology (IT) work you just have to go and get certification by going to any school for 3-6 months then you will be able to find a job with the IT field, matter of fact, I am working as a network specialist now. I know that the main focus for you right now is to either find a job as an interpreter or a role player but try to find something else Thx

I can say I am the best experienced linguist in all aspects of translation and I am pretty confident when I say that. However, I just wanted to pass on a great tip to you and share with each and every one of you.

First, I know that most of you ladies and gentlemen have just arrived the U.S recently and are excited about practicing the jobs you were doing before such as translation and whatnot, my sincere advice to everyone is to really look for something else more productive in the sense of expanding and increasing your skills and become more knowledgeable of other fields because there is no way to get a linguist job as long as you're a "green card holder" even difficult for U.S citizens that are licensed in the translation field to get a job sometimes.

I've made it to the U.S in March, 2009. I was looking for the same exact job you are looking for right now only for the first 2 months after arrival to the U.S; all I did was wasting my time and I literally mean it. Do you realize how many people are looking for the same job? well take a wild guess..thinking still? they're numerous and being here on this forum and surfing the internet is not going to take anywhere but add more weight to you and make you sluggish "trust me". As sad as it sounds but that would be the reality.

Finally, please don't get me wrong but I am just trying to help you all. If I were you, I'd rather go ahead and go to school, get your degree or supplement your degree, get certified in other fields & ultimately have other skills "options" in life that you can off of to easily get a job. So true Waleed, everything you said is true. It has been hard for U.S. citizens with extensive experience in the field to get a job. If you do not arrange for a job before you come back to the US, it gets harder by the day since many many many people want the same job. Good luck everyone!

Try Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX....They have some Arabic speaking foreign nationals who work at Lackland Air Force Base who seem to have good jobs. You can find a lot of these Arabic Speaking Linguists during the week partying with their families at Randolph Air Force Recreation Area at Canyon Lake, TX during the week when MOST people are working. So if you are looking for a good job and time during the weekdays to play and spend time with your family, apply at Lackland Air Force Base.
