What are the top 3 traits or skills every architect must have to excel?

Can you suggest any tips or insights to develop your architect expertise?

Autocad, Autocad, Autocad ... that's all you need to know. Be able to do changes after changes, sitting in front of the computer, working long hours, getting low pay and minimal compensation.

Licensure, Revit, LEED AP and five years+ laboratory experience are what you need.

On a broader perspective: Ability to solve problems, willingness to learn and grow, and self-discipline (if you're considering licensure, since no one will push you for that).

Out of all the traits I would have to say the one that is the most scarcest is revit. At least that's the way I feel about in indiana. There are five certified professionals in the state, me being one of them, and I survived three rounds of layoffs. I believe that revit is still an emerging component of the industry, one which everyone has yet been able to grasp. I would also say if there is no preference go with revit mep, which is more the engineering version. It has the least pool of expertise.
